Temperature sensor range

Temperature sensor range

  1. 1. What is your preferred temperature range for sensors ?

    • 0K-573,15K [up to 300°C like in the current build]
      1
    • 0K-1350K [just enough for buildings out of thermium]
      18
    • 0K-5000K [enough to melt all sensors]
      16
    • Reduce the temperature range (/revert it to it´s old state)
      0

There could be a separate extreme temp sensor that can measure above 300C and below -40C. But seriously, we can send rockets into space but don't have the technology to make a temp sensor that goes beyond 300C? Come on, Klei, that's just ridiculous.

Well...dupes never ever wash their pants or eat with cutlery too...but they fly to space with steam!! Engines

How are washing pants or using cutlery possibly connected to space flight? Maybe the clothes are made of reed fibres that have a natural nano- or oil coating so they don't need washing... you know like wool in real life. And I'm pretty sure the Chinese have a space program, although they never use cutlery.

Should there be maybe separate "high temperature" sensors (with some downside attached)?

I agree. Clamp the current one to -40 to 300. (Liquify chlorine but nothing else) Then add 2 more with a bit of overlap that require a small amount of power (30w maybe?) and extra resources.

The cold one (absolute zero to -25) would require 100kg of wolframite + refined metal.

The hot one (275 to 750, hot enough for sour gas but not close to molten glass) would require 100 kg of ceramic and/or thermium in addition to the normal refined metal.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to have a sensor that extends the range both colder and hotter. I also don't like the idea of having three thermo sensors, it just seems redundant. Leave the current thermo sensor as-is, 0-573K. Or maybe restrict it to the range 0-473K. Then a more expensive thermo sensor that works through 0-1373K. You could (as a balancing effort) make the better sensor about the same cost as the earlier sensor, but with decreased sensitivity... have it only sense temperature to the nearest 5 or 10 degrees.

I've been using a mod to increase the range ever since discovering it's existance.  I'm sure some will view this as 'cheating' but whatever, it seems like an oversight to me that the range is so limited to begin with.

as there is no competition in this game there is no such thing as cheating.

Hence the quotes.. There's a lot of people around here who feel there is a correct and incorrect way to play the game.  I just play it whichever way provides me the most enjoyment.

My opinion would be your not playing the same game if you start modding / editing the "raw" gamefiles, but I see no "correct or incorrect" way of playing this game.

I like the additional challenge provided by the need to invent our "own" temperature sensor (I prefer to use melting resources for this purpose, but just recently I saw a post about merging packets of constant temperature to scale the temperature increase down into our measurable range).

Beeing able to heat all gasses your venting into space by about 1000K using just a thermoaquatuner and a "simple" temperature sensor seems a bit to easy [sure you need a some thermium first ...]

In the sense of beeing as ridiculous as a steam rocket. I mean temp sensor range vs rocket is ridiculous. But never mind I just wanted to underline that ridiculous has been a part of oni for a long time

Btw. Very funny fact with the Chinese space program. I plainly assumed eating sticks are under the same terminus as forks and spoons. Eating utensiles - cutlery...
