Maxwell explained it in his confession in the end of adventure mode (he called the player "plaything", and look how bad he felt in the Cyclum comic), his actions were ill intended, he couldn't really tell if he did his on his own or They forced him to do it. However, we do not exactly know how Charlie became the Night Monster, maybe it's like a fragment of her mind (like summoning shadow puppets) is lost to Them, and this might resulted in the former figure, the Shadow Monster. This is a possible explanation of the circumctances. That makes no sense. The night monster is just what charlie became when she went to the constant. Maxwell became the king, charlie became the queen. Its a theory , we don't know if Charlie died when she entered the constant and she hates him, so to me it suggests something happened when they were in the constant that soured there relationship. The gate keeper has gone through the gateway, and charlie has never done that. she needed the players to go through it and get that white stuff. Wilson goes to the shipwrecked world with a regular boat, and uses a hot air balloon to get to hamlet. All the clock works are based off something from the lore, and the knight and rooks originals have been found. The clock work bishop is based off the gate keeper! If you read the update poster for the doorway to adventure update, it call the clock work bishop a gate keeper. This seems like it means something. The gate keeper will probably have the same model of a bishop.
