Fun Drecko Ranch

Mine is superior, just needs some conveyor to collect eggs.

The main difference is My dreckos live on hydrogen 60-80% of The Time growing scales, yours maybe 25%.

Notice with controlled environment The dreckos sit on hydrogen Also when groomed/sheared.

More hydro = More plastic = More win.

Dreckos never escape through open pneumatic doors.

The difference between mine and yours    is  mine can hold almost infinite number of Dreckos WITHOUT crowded debuff or expecting debuff.

Yours will only hold what?  7-8 dreckos?

So if you want to talk about efficiency-   more dreckos = more plastic.   :)

The door issue is just RNG/luck.  it is possible for them to escape when a dupe goes through it.

The purpose of mine farm is to house wild drecos that evolve to glossy,  and tamed eggs or dreckos that I breed in a controlled environment somewhere else with incubators when I feel like making one fast and moving them here to drop off.  With so many dreckos, I don't have a grooming station here to avoid wasting their time.      So less down time for my dupes on the grooming- don't need to make them happy because they're eating not confined, not overcrowded. not micro managing expecting debuffs either.

As for the hydrogen coverage,  I didn't bother to mess with it, but it can be easily tweaked, with a 1 tile airlock along the floor before the opening ladder area.

thank God.  I use free range ranching constantly in my games for Shine bugs and pufts.

Yea my shine bug is in an open room ranching as well where I'm actually grooming them to constantly to maintain my solar panels, I figured one guy always grooming shine bugs is useful as I'm powering 4 solar panels with just 1 LURE in the middle between all 4 panels.  I think the water lock keeping it open and the fact that they won't fly into the water,   is a good way to maintain the grooming station from  trying to whistle critters from the other side of the asteroid.   must be a pathing there where it knows only to groom the ones within the area that can reach it.

nope.

they escape through manual airlocks snd airlocks, but never pneumatic.

you've been lucky then.   I've had a setup in the past where they have slipped by a few times.  then again I had more dreckos than you do - so the chance for escape is higher.

Actually i believe overcrowded and expecting (it`s called cramped now) doesn`t affecttheir scale growth. Currently i`m keeping my dreckos overcrowded so they eat less and just breed them in another ranch.

it affects their reproduction growth.  yea.

like I said reason for my setup is to just have a  dumping a ground with no dupe maintenance, other than sheering.

one last note.  the reason for feeding them blossom or mealwood  is to increase chance of getting glossy eggs.

none of my dreckos are tamed.   I just collect them wild and drop them off here.   collect eggs and drop them in the container sweep and drop them.     the white ones eventually become blue  from the food source.

ACK when did this change?  That's going to screw up my free range shine bug in my main base!

yeah my bad. I was looking into farming station codes and automatically assumed that all stations work the same. Obviously they don't...

One egg / 90 cycles so this Will take hundreds of cycles.

Mealwood increases chance of glossy, Bristle does not.

As @Lifegrow already mentioned, 'open' ranching has been around since Ranching Mk1.  It's not actually broken, you just can't see the results directly.  If you setup a room with 180 cells, you can setup a 15 critter ranch in a room that can't be defined (largest is 128).  At 16 it overcrowds.

If you take whatever your setup is and do a large count, you'll find there's usually a limit.  Completely open ranching for me has had some odd results, however, when pacus come into play.  I've found them to be hit or miss as to if they'll actually incur the overcrowding penalty on hatches.  My guess is I missed something when I was trying to figure it out and I just shoved a few doors across the roof of them in aggravation.

Not entirely.  I've used this technique before during early game to shove a handful dreckos into a normal mealwood farm.  Once they've eaten, they'll keep improving towards glossy from the mealwood bonus for a while.  Once you've got *1* glossy egg, you can proceed from there.

However I'd ask how long someone using this tactic typically keep a ranch like this active, as a 150 cycle lifespan actually changing generations of dreckos seems absurd.  You're looking at a 1000+ cycle playstyle.

The two grooming stations are to speed up the process and make sure all of them stay as much time as possible inside hydrogen. I never incubate eggs, the population mantains itself. If I need to open another ranch, I just move a couple of eggs in a new room (unless you want to use the exploit of the grooming station working out of the stable, in this case they keep laying eggs and population increases exponentially).
