Are dusk caps obsolete?

Recommended Posts

I use a huge mix of foods all through my game as no need to use great food on dupes that don't need it,  but mid to late game I start feeding the mushrooms/fried mushrooms to the hatches to make sage hatches and that ends up being their main food source.

for me, they were always obsolete because no upgrade path.  I can start with berries, then fry them, then stuff them to upgrade food quality making investing in a berry farm worthwhile.  Why build a mushroom farm, only to abandon when i need better food?

If you're going to feed it to a sage hatch.  wouldn't it make more sense to just  do that with the slimes from the start.   not sure what the conversion rate is.   Or is it better to make mushrooms to feed the sage hatch

how much coal a hatch fed with mushrooms generate? It is the same as normal minerals??? I usually fed my hatches with some abundant mineral due to the coal conversion rate (the main reason to have hatchs), so never tried with mushrooms.

Almost nothing : 75% of the mass consumed (100% for sage hatches). But it's worth it for the meat & egg shells and I'd say a very good mid-late game path for dusk cap farmers. Sustaining lots of hatches with minerals is costly (1,12 tons of minerals per cycle for a full stable) and they won't eat regolith, the only material that I'm willing to spare by the thousands of tons.

I always like the ideas involving more recipes, but have a preference for new alternative non-grill uses. Critter feed is one such example.

Honestly, I can't say I'm against the idea of having something like Mushroom Stew.  In fact, I think it's a sound idea.  It could certainly help those that play in higher difficulties with managing Dupe's immunities a little better and not be so reliant on vitamin chews.  However, with the way that the Devs have balanced the higher-tier foods they might want to include peppernuts in the recipe?

hatches fed mushrooms will eventually be sage hatches with the better conversion rate

That conversion doesn't work really for Sages unless you feed them dirt or some kind of raw mineral. Mushrooms don't weigh a lot, and even just 1 will fill a Sage hatch up on his calories and just poop out that tiny bit of mushroom for coal.

I honestly think that might be a great way to farm lime from sage hatch eggs if you don't need the coal to run things. The only downside is the lack of coal return from feeding Sage's omelettes and mushrooms, but if you only care about the lime from the eggs, who really cares about coal? :)

Plus, if you crack the eggs for quick egg shells, you can just fry up that egg and feed their babies right back to them. Yummers!!!
