Ranching for food is bad Idea

Recommended Posts

I thought using Ranching is a stable source of food but its not. I got 8 duplicants and 32 slickster to support them using eggs but unfortunately grooming them all take forever even I got 2 duplicants dedicated for ranching alone. 1 Cycle is not enough to groom them all that cause them be unhappy and not produce egg. :(( This is just an FYI to everyone

make more ranchers only two for 32slickster?

that is too much

i like one ranching room(96tile) one rancher. But he only rancher not seasoned

Well it just shows the Ranching for food is not sustainable enough for you to stop farming. They should make Ranching more desirable

Ranching wastes more time if the dupe can't breathe and takes regular breaks in the middle of grooming. Suit up your rancher.

Make sure all the slicksters are nearby. Shape of stable doesn't matter, so you can make a tiny room at the bottom where all critters sit on each other, as long as the room itself has 12 tiles per slickster.

A properly managed critter produces about 200 kcal/cycle (in omelettes). This is lower than a single unboosted berry (333kcal/cycle) and takes way more dupe time, so the only real gain here is that you don't need to spend tons of cool water or dirt on just keeping the colony alive.

If ranching was so good that the players were avoiding farming, it would be a good sign that balance is terrible.

Ranching already gives useful resources that aren't food, so it should be worse than farming at making food.

The only buffs it really needs are:

  • Less critters needed for same effect (more consumption per critter, more eggs per critter) to save on processing
  • Some non-horrible way to herd pufts. Lures are horrible.

I've found lately that having a variety of food sources works out for the best.  Only berries? Gonna have a hard time keeping water around.  Only shrooms? Better have a good way of getting more slime.  The point I'm making is that ranching augments farming by adding a food source as a byproduct of keeping critters around.  Need slime for your 'shrooms? Then you're gonna need pufts.  Previously that was the only reason to have them around.  Now they ALSO lay eggs? Bonus!!!

.. and Yes, Coolthulu, herding pufts sucks.

Ranching is awesome. 1. Critters don't care much about temps, 2. They produce products other then food. 3. they eat resources you rather wanna get rid of anyway. 4. Eggs have higher quality then gristle berry & fried shrooms.

Hatches keep coal gens running and eat what ever you give them, slicksters give you oil and remove Co2. The eggs here and there are a very nice addition, but not the main reason to get them only partly the reason.

My only concern about ranching is that i'm not able to set eggs to be hatched on a continuing basis. Would be really nice if incubators worked the same as all other production apparatus with a queue and all.

Something to keep in mind is that we only have half the Ranching Update.  This is Mk1.  Mk2 is coming soon to an asteroid near you.  Most likely there will be new critters being added, like the Volgas rodents, Pacu fish, and Shock Wurm hostile insect that have been in the game files for a long time but not yet implemented.

Murphy's law, if one thing can gone wrong, it will so multiply solution make better change of survive, in case of trouble you could solve the problem and survive with the other food

Not anymore, but i'm sur this will coming back and you need to heating up the slickster room (they will die under 35°C just before the ranching upgrade, dev just shut down this parameter to let us test ranching

yep. They're always starving

Yeah cause they eat gas and not from feeder, need to try with solid co2 or co2 in bottle to see what happen

Mine too :)
No planter box / hydrotile used. Stuffed berrys are sometimes on the card too and mushrooms for ever.
Dupes got tired about stockpiling rotten shrooms and they start to dig into the science of fermenting mushrooms for psychedelic drugs.
