new geysers

Recommended Posts

I have the same question. I've been busy so I haven't played in a while. In the automation update, it seemed like every map would create 2 steam geysers, 2 NG geysers, and 1 chlorine. In the Ranching Mark I update, it seems like it will still create 2 steam, but either create 2 NG -or- 1 NG and 1 chlorine.

Is anybody playing a map without a chlorine geyser? Are you managing to find enough chlorine just from pockets of gas on the map, or just not using chlorine?

Also, it seems like the other geyser types are hidden under rock or ice or something like that. Anybody have any idea how many and what type(s) to expect? Thanks.

considering what chlorine is used for and how useless ore scrubbers are.  There is little need for a geyser and the pockets of gas found around the map is more than enough

IIRC the new Geyser system will produce approximately 13 Geysers per map.  2 of them are guaranteed to be the old Steam Geysers, and 1 is guaranteed to be the old NatGas.  There is then a 4th "guaranteed" Geyser that will either be a second old NatGas, or the old Chlorine.

I say "old", because they still produce the same substance at the same temperature, but their "active" and "dormant" cycles are determined by the new Geyser system, with all it's unholy RNG glory.

So with the 4 guaranteed Geysers, that leaves, on average, 9 others to find.  I think you are guaranteed to have at least 1 volcano, but not what type it rolls?

Me! I have 2 NG but no chlorine.

I also play without a chlorine geysers,

Chlorine is the most pointless gas to me, I usually freeze it and feed it to my hatches XD (Not sure if you can do that now?) and if I can leave pockets of it if I can. Germs do nothing unless you play on the hardest IIRC

@BlueLance Germs can be dangerous on all levels, it simply depends on howmuch of them are around.
At one point in a well developed colony set with increased resistance, all game I had no disease problems whatsoever, then at some point I decided to dismantle the big chunk of slime biome seperating my ( currently small ) NG generator operation and my base, so I could put in 4 more generators and a ton of fertiliser makers, I set to digging all of it out immediately, as well as building the levels for where my stuff was going to be.. bad mistake. I opened up a poluted water basin, and dug out a ton of slime, there was poluted oxygen everywhere, and all my dupes got sick, having to litterally stand in line at the pharma beds to get medical treatment, almost my whole base collapsed because of this.

No fatalities, but it was a close one. if I had done this on 'normal' settings, everyone would have gotten sick, and I'd have run out of food ( I was at 300k calories at the start of this, at the low I was at 20k ) before the plague was over.
Aaanyway, back to the topic of geysers, I've been making games in debug over and over for a bit, then hunt the maps for the hidden geysers to see what I could find:

This is what I found so far:
Gas: Hydrogen, Natural Gas, Steam ( Hot 500degrees ), CO2, Chlorine

Liquid: Water(steam, around 100 degrees ), 'hidden' Oil wells outside of the oil biome, these are different than oil wells, Poluted water, infected poluted water ( the pH2O has food poisoning germs in it )

Solids: Minor Volcano ( magma -> sand ), Volcano( didn't see it erupt, so no idea what kind of magma comes out of this ), Molten Iron, Copper, Gold volcanos ( I'm guessing molten tungsten is also out there, seeing as the other metals have a volcano )

I also made some debug snapshots of these geysers, so if someone wants them I can upload those yaml files for people to paint them in themselves, provided I figure out where they are stored.

Nope. That would be op. In order to come out molten tungsten would need to be significantly hotter than the next hottest volcano (iron). Also how would you cool it? The only substance you could put in contact with it is abyssalite. Everything else would melt. I guess you could build a turbine chamber around it but you would need pretty high steam density to stop the turbine, door pumps and automation parts from melting.

It could maaaaybe be viable if the tunsten volcano followed different rules than all other metal volcanos and had its maximum potential output be significantly lower, and it's output temp to be slightly above melting (the others are closer to their boiling temps)

Isn't a gold volcano hotter? I thought Gold came out at 3000 degrees whilst iron was 2500?

Also @suicide commando Ok yes germs can be a threat, but its ususally on rare occasions

Iron has something like 4x the thermal capacity of gold, so whilst gold is strictly hotter, iron has waaaay more thermal energy.

I just looked it up and tungsten actually has a heat capacity closer to that of gold. It would actually give thermal energy comparable to that of copper but it would still come out massively hotter in temperature so you would still risk melting anything built near the volcano.

I accidently melted all of my pipes with an iron volcano.... was not how I envisioned it, Had to change all my piping

I know the feeling. I built copper automation stuff around my iron volcano. This is what I get for playing ONI at 4 am.

I have 3 NG and 0 chlorine.
