Now struggling with stress

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am struggling with something that I have never had issues with before (before the most recent upgrade) and I have been trying various things and not having much luck.

I have two dupes assigned to research and they are at the highest and second highest experience now.  But they have been chronic problems with being stressed,

I have relieved them of any duty expect research.

I have let research tasks un-assigned for periods of time to give them a break.  This has modest benefit.

They both have a massage table assigned to them, their own cot, no debris and paintings, etc. near their bed in designated bedrooms.

The problem is that they seem to never recover past 50% stress AND if there is a research task in progress and I have unassigned the from all duties including research, they still go and work on research instead of going to the massage table, etc.  There is the wrench icon in the research box now even when you have removed the check mark.

I am having more trouble with stress in general - which is fine because they probably tweaked some stuff.  But I can find no solution to reducing the stress on these two dupe - which is becoming frustrating.

Regards,

What food are they eating? when you upgrade the tier of jobs the dupes food and decor expectation goes up with them.  If they have low quality food or are working with low decor they will get stressed

Also if you check their stats it will tell you were the stress is coming from

This is early days in this colony.  Only cycle 38.

just bringing electorlyzers on line and (oh sooooooo slowly) breaking into the next biomes with my 2 miners.  It takes forever to mine anything now.  I only have 11 dupes because I cannot produce that much food yet.

So I only have tier one food because I haven't found anything else yet.

set up a blossom farm and grill them (gristle berries are tier 2)

or demote your researchers until you can get better food like pepper bread and stuffed berries

Thanks.  That helped.  I didn't realize as they increased in skill that they increased in expectations.

Good thing that doesn't work in the real world or all post-doctoral students would expire from this mismatch....

It's like telling a college professor he can only eat cup-o-ramen after he just got tenured

Also skill doesn't effect their expectations only job tier.  That's why I suggest demoting them

EDIT

nvm the expectations don't drop when demoted

2nd tier level isn't so bad that it's unmanageable,  but top tier will tend to cause a stress death spiral in the early game.  Frankly I don't bother with the top tiers until much later.  The +2 bonus just isn't worth it

Yeah I've an few experts on late game that do stuff other people only have tier 2 so I don't need to worry about them

What decor do you have in there sleeping area and general living area.

Dupes seem to get especially stressed when they're active in areas with horrible decor, say like having a heavy watt wire run thru the middle of your base. I find they can handle horrible food normally, but horrible decor drives them nuts

You can unlock better decor options on the bottom branch of your research screen. You'll also need a dupe in the artist profession with a reasonable creativity skill. After that just place a few painting above their sleeping coats, mess hall tables and areas where they're typically active like your research station. Putting down a few statues here and there will drive down stress even further. If you've put a space on either side of you ladders then place a airflow tile on each floor with a statue on it.

Even if you've not got an artist dupe jet, just having those structures there will help drive down stress

Other things that drive dupes nuts include low amounts of oxygen and being in a area with a ton of polluted oxygen

Ore thing I do for early game is to build all my floors top down.  That way all the debris falls lower and lower.  Leaves me with nicely clean rooms for my initial areas (barracks, mess halls, etc).

Not as good as art spam but helps until you get the tech and an art student

Also build the beds with granite. Gives a small decor bonus

That must be a recent change, then.  In my experience, Cots have a Decor rating of zero.  +20% of 0 is still 0.

Snazzy suits

Or be happy at 50%.  Set tables to 75% On / 40% off

I prefer to set Massage Tables to start at 45% and stop at 5%.  When Dupes reach 50% Stress, they will start "emoting" that they are Stressed.  But this causes them to drop any current held items, and lose their current task, which disrupts the workflow of the base.

So do I but OP is having early cycle issues.  For first 20 cycles on fatalistic, it is better to get them off early so they can do something other than sit there continuously.
