The goal?

Is there a goal in Oxygen Not Included? Can it be "won"? Or is this like Don't Starve where you create your own goals and there is no end (unless you die)?

Currently exploration & colony survival is the only explicit goal.  Players make up their own personal goals to create their own fun. It's anticipated that the developers will add more end-game goals and story in future game updates.

From what we heard and read for the devs there will be no definite end goal that finishes the game. Similar to Don't Starve. They are thinking about adding challenges that you can accomplish, I assume they add more lore stuff that kind of adds to that.

What players do in ONI is exploring and taking on their own challenges. The game is already full of stuff you can try and experiment with. There are different angles you can explore: You can try to make things more efficient, you can make things more complex and sophisticated or more funnier and prettier or if you want you can make things more hazardous and ugly. I have many hours in the game and there are still so many things I didn't try yet.

One funny Idea me and my flatmate have is to make a world where the printer leads to a deadly relay race, similar to what happens in the film "The Cube", where every room is a challenge and a deadly hazard. Only the lucky would then be able to survive it and reach the comfortable base.

What I hope they do in the future is add way to visit other asteroids in a fun way. For example one could add a surface where you can construct a spaceship in the same way you construct your base. Only that it has a sort of engine that you need to power, so it actually flies. The challenge would be that everything needs to be renewable for the amount of cycles you'd have to fly, which is definitely possible a fun. The payoff would be that first of all you made a spaceship! And you can land on a new asteroid and explore that, while you bring materials from the old one.

Don't Starve does have an objective... (And no, I don't mean one of those dumb "to have fun!" things)

You're not talking about getting to Maxwell, are you? If that's what you're referring to, then pretend I said Don't Starve Together. If you're talking about something else, then what are you talking about?

You collect the Things to build a portal to escape. This isn't just an Adventure mode thing--you can find them in the main world and even in Shipwrecked. It may not be a DST thing, but that's just a cop-out. (-:

It isn't a end goal that "wins" the game though. You do it because you feel like it, but nothing in the game pushes you that way and when you do it you get into a new world and the whole thing starts again. You can also choose not to do this (like most poeple most of the times) and just keep playing. DST specifically also has challenges set for you apart from sheer survival but you are not pressured in any way to face them. This is what ONI does as well and I really like it that way.

Starting a new game is just that: a new game. Whether that happens after completing the end goal in Don't Starve or The Legend of Zelda or Super Mario Bros. won't change that. Sure, no one's forcing you to win at Don't Starve, and Lost Levels also has those backwards warp pipes and the never-ending world 9...

I'm hoping Oxygen Not Included gets an objective. They've already mentioned learning about what the Duplicants are and why they're on the asteroid in the first place, but I'd like to see, like, a rocket ship where you can win. Then there's always something to do if you feel like you've squeezed everything out of the current world.

Whilst more content is always nice, I don't think ONI is the type of game that needs a definitive end.  Sandbox type games usually seem to work best when they don't.  Don't Starve not having an end goal allowed people to set their own goals: build bases, farm bosses, survive for thousands of days, etc.  IMO, that model suits ONI the best.

Not everygame needs an end goal. There's a goal, yes but not the one for ending it completely. Like what the others said, it fits the sandbox game genre. You mark your own goals and try finishing.

"Geyser overpowers your entire colony?" Then don't find and use any geysers.

"Duplicants are too easy to get?" Then try only managing 3-5 to a certain cycle.

There's a lot of possibility for this sandbox game, and it looks great that way. The devs are constantly adding new stuff to this game, thus increasing possible challenges and your own "end games". Well, I won't be dissapointed if the devs add one, and it might even be surprising..

When its not adventure mode all it does is regenerate a new world for you, and you're right back where you started. How can you possibly consider that to be the objective of the game?

I think some of you people are trying to read into my question more than you should. I don't know why I need to be told that "not every game needs an end goal." I never said that every game (or any game) did need one. I was wondering if this game had one or not.

Don't Starve doesn't restart after world hopping, you take resources and any keep everything that you've learned.  World hopping is just a way to collect more resources in order to build a base.

To me, collecting the things and opening the portal and world hopping is something you need to do 2 or 3 times before you can really start playing the fun part of DS.

No, it hasn't. I'm asking how in the world do you consider that to be the objective in the game your comment just says that you call that "winning" the game. I still don't know how anyone can consider that the goal of the game. It is something that you can do in the game, but it's absolutely not the end goal of the game. It's just a way for you to collect more non-renewable (or very slowly renewable) resources.

You can also build a camp fire in Don't Starve. Does that mean the end goal of the game is to build a camp fire? No.

As much as I'd love to spin my wheels reiterating the same thing until the end of time--unless you're suggesting that Super Mario Bros. has no end goal because 8-4 leads into 1-1--this really isn't going to go anywhere. I trust that you can recognize that.

With regards to Oxygen Not Included, it's uncertain whether an objective will be implemented. The intent of the game design has been stated to be to build a functional colony, so if the game does get an objective, it will probably be something that doesn't straight-up end the game.

Have you ever actually collected all of those things and "escaped" before? I say "escape" in quotation marks because that's not what you're actually doing but it is what you call it. All it does is generate a new random world for you. You keep your same character, inventory, and learned recipes. This is not the goal of the game. This is just a thing that you can do if you don't like the world you got or if you want to get more non-renewable resources. You can spin your wheels all you want, it doesn't mean what you're saying is true or even makes any sense.

Ok! You want a cut and dry answer, here you are:

No, there is no true end game to ONI at the time of writing.

It is unlikely that there will ever be a true game ending end game to ONI.

Spoiler
  • Think the end of Bioshock; that kind of game ending end game, where all loose threads have been tied up, and there's nothing left to go back to.

You're free to put the game down and continue on with your life satisfied with the journey.

However, it is likely that there will be a game restarting end game to ONI.

Spoiler
  • Think Don't Starve; where the end game is just creating a new world when you tire of the old one. You've done everything you can do?

Well, start again; and do it better this time. Faster. More profit for less expenses. Find everything you can exploit and exploit the hell out of it. Haven't used tubes or automation? Do it this time. Haven't even tried collecting oil? Collect it. You can do a no toilets run. Have you made an airlock or waterlock? Make it. Have you orchestrated the Mario Water level theme using automation technology? Well then do it. There's an endless world of possibilities, and it's up to you do it, restart, repeat.

Better.

Faster.

Stronger than before.

Just do it.

Even if the game has no hard ending I would like some milestones and measures of success.  Discovering all of the story content would be an obvious milestone - especially if it changes the way you play the game or how your dupes behave. Another measure of success could be transitioning your colony from a group of dupes struggling to survive to a comfortable and stable settlement.

Dupes will always be stupid...so not much to say there... :3

A fully autonomous base. They are beautiful to witness, even if it's barely playable on a laptop like mine. :3

This all depends on whether or not @KrisRF's eggs were runny or not that day as to whether or not we'll get a straightforward answer.

@JoeW should give her the title of the chesire cat for how often she speaks in riddles. :wilson_love:
