Okay, this is a major problem

Recommended Posts

Here's what's going on:  When the Forge started, I got a message saying "Please disable your mods, they might interfere" yada yada.  I thought, "Okay.  It'll only be for a while anyway." and made up a new world with a stupid name to play JUST during that event.  I completely thought, as I think a lot of us did, that once the Forge was over, the WHOLE code would go back to normal and we could use our favourite mods again.

Instead, now ALL of my old worlds are _still_ inaccessible!  I thought this'd be temporary!  I think it's mainly character mods that are doing it, and the culprit is none other than the stupid ugly beat-'em-up-looking new character-chosing menu.  Or at least, that's not helping.  Modded characters are all programmed to show up at the end of the _original_ style list, with the cute little portraits and arrows and such, each with their own cute little portrait.

Now, I don't go in for the sillier/less balanced character mods--all I have is Willow the Unnerfed (the mod that got me using mods AT ALL, because I hate the DST version of Willow that much), Shipwrecked Characters, and Winnie.  Problem is, since I like playing as "proper" Willow...that mod is enabled on EVERY.  SINGLE.  WORLD I have.

This change is not only aesthetically displeasing and inappropriate-looking to non-FIRE-AND-DEATH-COMBAT! Don't Starve in general, it's keeping me out of worlds that I have had for, well to give you an idea...my longest-running world? The one with Camp One-Foot-In-The-Grave, a peacefully-wandering Bearger, all kinds of silly signs put up by my friends whenever we hit another hundred-days milestone, and LAST YEAR'S WINTER'S FEAST TREE STILL UP?  Yeah, that one.  Gone--or might as well be.  And this world went both into and out of the "A New Reign" beta without a hitch!  (Sure, there was some weirdness, as since I'd already explored most of the world by the time the pets came in, the game had to throw the pet den into a really odd place--right near the Dragonfly's lair--but that mainly just caused a good story.)

Losing a lot of work because you _died_ in Don't Starve is expected.  It is a semi-roguelike after all (the singleplayer game, mainly--but try dying when you're the only player on the server).  I understand that.  If I had lost access to all my stuff because of something _I_ chose to install that I KNEW, at the time, was potentially janky, I could understand that as well.

But this is through no fault of ours, and had no warning. We were told we couldn't use mods DURING the Forge. We were told _nothing_ about AFTER.

Any else of you out there no longer able to access pre-Forge-made worlds?  What mod is causing it?  I've heard THAT there are multiple other people with this problem, but not specifics.   Let's pool our information and find out what's going on.

I'm sorry about my tone on the previous post, by the way--the "THIS IS WRONG AND OBVIOUSLY YOU NEED TO FIX IT NOW" sounds like Euededeewhatever or something, I realise now.  But...this is a little different.  Rather than "This doesn't suit my tastes, fix it whether other people like it or not", it's more like "This is an ACTUAL problem, since it's keeping me from _playing_!"

But I do apologise.  I didn't mean to sound quite like that . Still, you can see where I'd be upset.  Heck, you guys have been along for the journey on these no-longer-accessible worlds as well--most of the screenshots I've posted here have been from those.  The Oasis Cats, Christmas Wigfrid in the forest with her kitty, and "OMG!  THE ANTLION IS TRYING TO TAKE OUT THE PIG KING!" (aka "Starving Thrones") were all from those, as well as many others.

It just seems such a waste that those things could survive betas, multiple holidays AND multiple deaths...and be taken down by something as silly as a code change.

@CaptainChaotica can you let me know which character mods are restricting you from starting your old worlds? Is it causing a crash? If so please post the logs so we can get to the bottom of this.

Edit: As far as I can tell the character mods should have always worked for non-forge worlds during the event (any of the worlds that you host), that prompt you saw was talking about the client mods which likely would have failed for you when playing in a forge world.

I took a look at the mods you were referring to and it looks like the Willow mod (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=398326409) was updated today and will hopefully fix the issue you were seeing?

Hmm...guess I should've been more specific to begin with.  (smacks forehead)  Duh.

Well, it's not the in-game crash screen with the black background, that says text about mod.lua and whatnot.  The game ALMOST loads the whole way...and then "dontstarve.exe has stopped working" in a Windows error message box, and crash.  The only client mod I use these days is Dusk and Night Music, which I checked and it works fine.  All my other mods are serverside.  I even turned off Gesture Wheel just to be safe, 'cos, ya know, new gestures.

However, I use other character mods too (thanks to the dev of Willow the Unnerfed, I do appreciate the update), such as Shipwrecked Characters and Winnie...both of which have multiple versions in the workshop.  I looked at the two worlds I can't use anymore, and it seems the only possible problematic mods they have in common are the above-mentioned character ones.  (They do both also have stuff like Auto-Reequip weapon, Automatic Health Adjust, Non-Breaking Thermal Stone and Pickle it, but none of those are messing anything up--I've tested 'em on a new world.)

My newest one has all those - the character mods + Waiter 101 and Actual Season Randomizer (thanks to our own Electroely!),and it is fine.

Okay, just did some testing, both with just the possible-problem mod activated AND with that and the other ones I use all the time activated with it, and as far as I can figure out...bizzarrely enough, all the character mods appear to be fine. I tried it and the game did start with them, even Winnie.  I think the culprit now is possibly Girl Stuff, and also Birds and Berries and Trees and Flowers and Whatever With Friends (which is an older mod to begin with).  But both of my main older worlds do have Girl Stuff activated.  I'm afraid to turn it off, 'cos...what if i've made something with that mod on that world? I can't remember now if I have or not (it's mainly cute/girly versions of hats).  I think also Tea and Trees isn't working.  The new code doesn't seem to like things that add new non-game-asset things at worldgen...except...Pickle It is fine I'm confused.

I do know that these things didn't cause problems before, so...

While I suspect that Chaotica still can't see my posts, I find it immensely amusing that her first post said she used three mods.

Her second post then mentioned ten separate other mods that weren't mentioned at all in the original post.

Now, my approach to testing if mod compatibility is causing problems would be to:

1) Back up my save data

2) disable all mods

3) Try adding mods back in one by one.

So to be clear, our good captain believes that the new character selection menu, which was already functioning during the forge for non-forge worlds is the problem.  Of course, it wouldn't show up for her on an old world anyway... because she would've already picked (willow) a character.

I don't doubt that some mods will have issues as the forge laid some code foundation for future events, but if you have issues please post logs (which can be found in your documents/klei/donotstarvetogether/client_log.txt) so the devs or code-literate members of the community can help solve your problem.  No one can help you if you don't give them all the relevant information, which is going to be included in the logs.

If you can zip up your entire Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether directory and send that over, I can take a look and see if there's anything that can be done to recover the save files. Generally we try to do our best to maintain compatibility and not break mods, but due to the completely open nature of the lua environment that the mods are able to interact with, at times there are conflicts with mods that we're simply unable to foresee.

Yeah, I get that.  And a couple of these were older, too (such as the Birds and Bees and Trees and...etc. one) so they're more likely to be susceptible to that kind of thing.

Okay, got it. How should I send it--e-mail, or somehow put it as an attachment on a private message, or...?

Sometimes even when the game crashs that way you can have a log. Try see here :

(Note : we aren't in the beta anymore so your folder should be DoNotStarveTogether).

I put it here because it could help you to find yourself what is wrong, just in case (and because being able to find log is very helpful in many cases)

Is two requests from a developer not sufficient for you to figure out how to transfer the files?  Literally any of the options you listed would waste less developer time than asking obvious questions.

The forums have a button right below where I’m typing now to attach files.

If PeterA is taking time to help you, can you please not make it take 3x as long as it needs to?

I actually like the new character selection list, I don't have to spam the left/right arrows to get the character I want, it's pretty great.

I prefer the old menu design but I like the quickness of the new menu.

animated portal background.

Right and the menu design showing the portraits like originally but with the menu placement of the new one. That way it keeps that portrait gallery feeling but with half the wait of clicking through.

Okay, so... @PeterA, I tried to send it in a private message, but when you go to do that, the "Drag files here to attach" thing isn't there at the bottom of the message box. Only here.

So...
