TheKingofSquirrels
1) If I set my Starting Variety to Classic, does that mean Grass Geckos won't spawn in my world? I love the mob, but I hate Juicy Berries and Twiggy Trees. Super ugly. 2) Should I turn Disease off? I like the idea of finding abandoned bases that are overrun by disease, but I´m gonna be doing a solo play-through. I like a challenge, but it sounds a bit too...boring? 3) Setting Rain to less in the Caves...Is that a bad idea? I understand why we need rain in caves, cause Mushrooms won't re-grow, but rain in caves is just dumb; so I'd like to keep it to a minimal. I also like the idea of taking shelter in caves when it's raining. Also, how does it work? Does it rain in the caves at the same time that it´s raining on the surface? fimmatek
About Nr 3.: I'm almost sure that it's raining on the two shards seperatedly, I often come up from caves to see that it's raining up there (or otherways). Considering how much do you plan to stay in caves and how much you'll depend on naturally spawn mushrooms (not the mushroom planter), I'd turn it to less, so that I wouldn't have to bother with it that often. Although it's a true challenge when it's raining, dark and dangerous. Or at least I had some sloppy adventures... 2: I find it more annoying than challenging that I have to watch my bushes, so I usually use farms instead. But it worth to turn it on to practice how to prevent/fight disease, I say. I'd also have a question: if I set something to random, let's say winter, than it'll be always different (once short, then very long, for example) or something will be chosen and that setting will stay forever on that server? Kittydub
I usually play solo and Disease is something I don't have time for, so I always turn it off. I played with it a few times with friends a while ago, but it's just so tedious when you're alone, I wouldn't recommend it. No idea about the grass gecko's.. I generate worlds until I have one with normal berries and twigs, and I turn world regrowth on less (Or very slow or something, my mind is leaving me here.) so the point where it turns resources into other resources takes longer. I am on day 250 now and I still have twigs and normal berries. A few lost twiggy trees here and there, but it's fine, because I have my farms now anyway. 19 minutes ago, fimmatek said: I'd also have a question: if I set something to random, let's say winter, than it'll be always different (once short, then very long, for example) or something will be chosen and that setting will stay forever on that server? You can always try turning of Season Clock if you are using Combined Status to make it more surprising, but for further tips on that I would send you to @CaptainChaotica . Has a lot of experience with random seasons and knows all the tips and tricks to make it work. I´m pretty sure, that World Regrowth has nothing to do with variants. It's more to do with trees spreading and stuff like carrots and flowers re-spawning. Well, then I got lucky in the last two servers I have played, that's also a possibility of course All I know is when I put it on the least, it barely gives me the other resource variant. CaptainChaotica
With random seasons, yes, after the game has chosen the length for each season, it will be the same as the first year from them on. Unfortunately. I'd prefer it re-randomised every time the season (or the chance for it!) comes up, but whaddyagonnado. The game can indeed entirely _skip_ one or more seasons if you set them all to random--"None" is, after all, one of the valid choices. I've had this happen at least a few times: Once where a very short winter suddenly warmed way up into...SUMMER? and we had sepia-toned lighting on top of still _fully-sized_ mini-glaciers, another time when the game decided to skip TWO seasons and I only had spring and fall, and at least one time when somebody with Season Clock or such told me "Did you know you only have three seasons?" but I died before I got to find out which one was missing. : P You wanna do random seasons properly? Turn off your meta-information mods, plant birch trees near base (unless they're already there, of course) and figure it out by...watching nature! Like in the old days! (Seriously, it's way more fun that way. "Hmm. A bare tree." "Huh, I'm already starting to sweat by the fire even in the dead of night..." More fun to figure it out by Signs and Portents.) Oh, and always make sure to have logs, grass, twigs and nitre on you (and the first three of those, you should always have anyway!) You'll thank me later. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/78072-three-random-questions-on-world-settings/#findComment-912530 Share on other sites
fimmatek
@Kittydub, thanks for the tips! Sure I'd turn Season Clock off, but as changing random seasons don't look to be possible, I must choose a different challenge... I even found a mod for it, but it's outdated, or at least not working for normal hosted servers. @CaptainChaotica, I also like to observe nature The pity is only that once I know the lenth of the season, there won't be much surprice anymore, and I'd like to have a long-lasting world... but thanks anyways! (P.S: I always have logs, twigs, grass and some flint just in case. Even if I solo, because in emergency a lantern cannot warm you up although I usually never take nitre. That might be a useful idea!) CaptainChaotica
Exactly! Which is why I wish the seasons randomised _every_ year. But, they don't. I found a mod that seems to do exactly that? but unfortunately it's only for DEDICATED servers! Which mine is not. (It's called something like "Dynamic Season Length", if you wanna look it up. Why only dedicated?) EDIT: I _used_ to leave nitre on the ground, because "Bah, it's yellow but it isn't gold." ...and THEN Reign of Giants happened... ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/78072-three-random-questions-on-world-settings/#findComment-912684 Share on other sites

Grass gekkos will still spawn from players harvesting grass, twiggy trees will spawn from world regrowth and juicy berries will spawn if you're on endless or wilderness. If you want to avoid gekkos, put fences/walls around your grass so the gekkos that spawn don't escape. At one point there will be enough gekkos in the area (about 4 I believe?) that will make it so more gekkos won't spawn. Or you can just use lureplants to farm grass instead, that doesn't spawn gekkos. On 4/22/2017 at 11:44 PM, TheKingofSquirrels said: 2) Should I turn Disease off? I don't like it, but grass gekkos and twiggy trees are a good alternative for grass and twigs and those don't get diseased. But since you don't like those, I guess you should disable it since the way to counter disease is very tedious (replanting your stuff every ~50 days).
