Mencken
I was the only survivor in the Spring with several ghosts, had revived one and was about to revive a second. This entire game I was helping people to stay alive and trolls were coming in constantly trying to kick players out. By the middle of Spring they voted me out. This is what destroys community spirit in the game. ShadowDuelist
Was by any chance a trio of "players" that just joined to kick and voteregen? If so its a known troll that never got any punishment, and somehow keeps getting amusement out of doing that with 2 bots. Regardless, votekick and voteregen do need a fix, its been a known issue for a while now. Also the vote to rollback, Ive lost my progress countless of times just because a small group of players die to shenanigans and don't know what to do (despite my desperate yells of ILL REVIVE YOU DONT VOTE YES I HAVE GLANDS), whilst running desperately in slow motion, my sweat riding the wind with a bunch of glands in my tiny spidery hands, right before getting back in time. Mencken
I think it might have been voteregen. The other one was **** (that was another day) who ended a game I actually was tired of and needed an excuse to stop, too funny. Well, it is their problem, they are chasing all the good players out. I'll just set up my own server. This is what destroys community spirit in the game. It sucks to hear that you had a bad experience, but ever since the voting system was implemented more harm has been done than good. What I recommend next time when considering/playing a public server: 1. Check to see what options there are available to the server. If you 100% don't want to deal with the voting system, the only way to prevent this from happening is finding a server without these options available, or make your own server and have your own rules. 2. You can avoid the kick by leaving the server and rejoining after the vote has expired (yeah it's that stupid). Yes I will continue to spread this information, especially to players who will once a week come on to the forums complaining about this system that has been used AGAINST THEM just like many others. At least with more people knowing how terribly implemented this system is they don't have the false hope of thinking it will some how protect them when anyone and their grandmother can dodge it or abuse it with a little common sense. (How they didn't think that people would do this is beyond me, anyone could've told you this system would be abused with how it's set up, so with that fact, i'm not too surprised it's so easy to avoid a kick like this). 3. Finding a group of people who, like you, want to play the game the way it was meant to be played. Having more friends that you know helps against situations like these, building up trust with others not only proves that you wouldn't have a reason to be kicked, but having more people on your side makes it less likely you will be kicked. If I had to recommend any of these more than the rest it would be 3, because unless you make your own server, 1 is going to limit the amount of servers you can play to much less than it already is, (when combining factors like ping and more, this actually can limit the amount of joinable public servers to less than 5 on the beta branch) so the best bet is to try and cope with this system while finding friends who are going to play like you and have your back when trolls join the server. Mencken
Great tips Pizza time! Yeah, I can never make it through summer because people regenerate the world every time. mochilo
There are like ten players everyday opening threads on Steam forums looking for partners to play. I suggest talking with some of them from close places (if you want to minimize the lag thing) and just make a private server where you can have fun and progress with some mates. At least until the online multiplayer thing gets a real fix. I played this game for close to 400 hours almost always alone. ItsPizzaTime
Yep as long as inexperienced players have access to this voting system worlds will be re-rolled constantly, people getting kicked left and right with no one knowing who is the actual jerk, and much more will happen, all while there is virtually zero decline in greifing. The only thing the voting system does is provide a false sense of security. Rollback has been useful to me before, and if anything is probably the only good thing that came out of the entire implementation of this voting system, as it cannot be "abused" to an extent nearly as extreme as completely restarting the world. HutGenerator
There is a bulletin board for finding players. Do post your information such as your country, language, discord, experience, type of server, etc. Im sure many people would like to join. CaptainChaotica
Well, I can tell you I never shut down until everyone's truly dead at once, and I _love_ making it through all four seasons. Can't guarantee they'll be normal, though...or that I live anywhere near enough to you for my server to be playable... The survival don't stop until the fat lady sings _and_ has gone out for doughnuts, in my place! I don't reset the entire world just because Deerclops showed up or summer happens. Summer means "go down to the caves or prototype an endothermic fire and turn on the fling", not "give up"! Even when it happens really suddenly and/or includes the ground trying to eat you. : P It's an adminned, actually-run-by-an-actual-person* server, so vote all you want, little brats! _Nothing resets that I don't agree to_. ...Notorious *Which I still maintain is, unfortunately, so far the ONLY way to make sure people behave themselves. Sigh. AniMike
I hate public servers, players on their either reset because its a couple of days in or they died and want a fresh start, I never got kicked yet, usually because I isolate myself from the group of griefers/thiefs/unindependent players in game. I always wanted to do a legit discord mic group and make a cool base, sadly, it'll just be a solo thing for me because of how our community is divided and now most people don't trust others. (From what I've experienced.) JimmyJam
I stopped caring about public servers. Ill go on now and then to meet new people but i never get attached to a server or world. I always see public servers as a short game. Which is sad because i would be nice to play a long game with some random people. SkyCommision
Well that sucks. Generally the solution is to not play on overly popular servers like How to Survive or Strictly Unprofessional. As someone who frequently hosts DST servers from my computer, I can say that it's generally a good idea to join servers with ~3 players on - not too big, and not too small, as griefers and trolls usually don't join small servers. 2-3 players is usually the sweet spot for new players, and at that point, other players just starting out begin to join. At that point there are usually so many people that are actually trying to survive that the trolls are usually overruled. If that's not your cup of tea, why not create your own server? With the right tactics, you can get a lot of players to join. Even better, you, yes you, can be admin yourself - meaning that you can kick people yourself. DST servers generally aren't very hard to create and can run pretty smoothly, even with your mom watching Netflix in the other room (as long as you have ~60mbps of download speed). Finally, if that's still not your cup of tea, some groups have private servers. No troll or griefer would ever bother to join a group just to jerk around, so that's good. Finally finally, if you don't even drink tea, just make a passworded server and invite some friends. If you have a large group of friends this usually works out. tl;dr - You might want to join servers with 3-4 players in it, create your own server, join a private group server, or make a world with your friends if everything else doesn't work out. CaptainChaotica
I think we also need to make a distinction here about public servers vs. PUBLIC servers. I.e., servers, probably small ones, that are run by an actually-present fellow player and just happen to not be passworded or friends-only, vs. stuff like...the Klei servers. The one is stuff like...well mine, because I don't want to cut myself off from meeting new players who might actually be cool. I also didn't have like, any Steam friends before I started playing DST, so if it had been private from the beginning I might not have had any fellow players, ever! No, I'm not immune to griefers, because it's not cut down to _only_ people I trust. BUT! If anybody starts acting like a jerk I can kick them, rollback and reset votes won't happen, and if I or anybody else sees a griefer acting suspicious _before_ they do anything, I can ban them as well. Also so far I've only been griefed once, ever. Vs. PUBLIC servers which...yeah, is what's being talked about here. The babysitter is out of the room, the teacher turned her back and TOTAL CHAOS REIGNS! Anybody can act like anything, anybody can _vote_ anything, and anybody can be kicked, banned or bullied by group-vote at any time. It's basically like, Lord of the Flies. Not all public servers are the same, is all I'm saying...so if you see that attribute next to a server name, don't immediately count it out. Look at the player list and see if anyone's an admin. That doesn't guarantee that said admin will be a decent person...but at least you know there's SOME control. And, I totally agree with SkyCommision here--small groups are really kind of the best. True, a huge _coordinated_ group who all know what they're doing can achieve some awesome things--they often get cool posed screenshots and gorgeous, perfectly symmetrical megabases. But for really digging in and _playing_, feeling like you're making a difference while not having to shoulder the whole burden yourself, 3-4 players really is the way to go. It's more intimate, easier to organise and you can often make friends playing this way if you get along. Heck, MOST of my Steam friend-invites came after or during a session where there were few enough people, everybody had something significant to do. At that number, you can keep track of what everybody is like both as a player and a person. (I also love the extended tea analogy. "Finally, if you don't even DRINK tea..." : P) ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/73974-going-to-try-and-avoid-public-games-from-now-on-newbies-come-in-and-kick-you-out-if-you-dont-vote-to-regenerate/#findComment-865894 Share on other sites
Mencken
My server is on the East Coast (central) and I've tested it, so far so good. The service provider is Citadel. I have several players as candidates already and am looking for 1-2 more. A mix of different levels would be the most fun. Idea would be to play 1-2 times per week with the first objective of making it through all the seasons. I like to make the game challenging, if bad stuff happens we deal with it instead of doing resets/rollbacks. The only exception obviously would be if everyone died and there was no option to resurrect. I'll probably use Discord for communications (new to this) but the individual players can set up as they choose.
