A few frustrations

Recommended Posts

My main concern lies with having fun on the dedicated Klei servers.  2 times in the last week a friend and I joined a Klei server with plans to have fun for 2-3 hours getting a base built.  Typically, we like to explore the world first, gather some resources and then find a nice spot to plop down.  Both of these times people would join after we started and demand to know where a our base is.  We would kindly tell them we don't have one set up but we would let them know where it would be located.  This is where the frustration begins.  The first time 4 people joined around day 10 and started a vote to regenerate the world.  it was those 4 VS my friend and I and the world was regenerated.   The second time 5 people joined around day 10 and started a vote to kick both me and my friend.  Initially i brushed it off as bad luck, but then today after i spent 6 days exploring a map a random regen world vote started and passed.  It's to the point where I'm considering not playing DST anymore, at least on dedicated Klei servers.

My suggestion would be to not allow players to vote to regen a world or make it require everyone's consent.  In regards to banning players, perhaps change things so that a player must be in the game for at least 5 days before they can initiate a ban?  I don't know if i have the correct "fix" to this issue but i do know that if this happens again I likely won't play DST anymore.

Sorry but your only solution right now is playing on servers that don't have these options (which yes severely limits your playing options if you're not experienced enough to start in any season / in a scenario where resources are scarce) and sadly it doesn't seem like Klei really cares that this system is pretty much the new greifing tool because they have said zilch about it. Go ahead and look up how many threads are made in total and even how many are made per week, this issue is getting out of hand and as much as I love Klei i'm seriously worried they either believe there is no problem and that this system is good or that it's just not a priority at all with this new update they're doing. Luckily I personally haven't had as many if any issues at all with being on the beta branch in comparison to how it was when it first came out on stable, but soon when the branches are merged again it's going to be back to limited options on where I can play.

@Mdshadowman Thanks for the suggestion, but I've had even worse experiences in other servers.  In fact, a similar thing happened, world was regen'ed by an "admin" after 20 days regardless of my complaints and then when i told him how frustrating that was he banned me.  Fun stuff.

Personally I have completely given up on any public servers. The amount of griefers and freeloaders is just too much to deal with. Player experience levels vary wildly on non-private servers, so there will inevitably be people who have no idea what they're doing and who ruin things for everyone else. You're better off either joining a friend's server or starting one yourself. Make it password protected or steam group server only, and you won't have any problems usually. Yes, this does make it harder to find new people to play with, but if you don't want to waste your time in a world that goes to hell every time you so much as look away, it's one of the only choices you have.

Basically, only play on those servers if you're willing to practice zen levels of nonattachment. Experiment, fool around, make connections with other serious players that you can meet up with on a more controlled server. Host a game yourself. Klei isn't, that I can see, in the business of adminning game servers. Their official servers are sandboxes for players to fool around in and get a sense of the game. I agree that a setting preventing new players from starting a regen vote would be nice, but there could also be problems or abuse with that. And no matter what you do on a public server, the world is very unlikely to be there the next time you play, so even without griefers, you shouldn't get too invested in it.

My servers do not regenerate unless everyone (not counting me) asks for it. The problem lies in three things:

- when there's no admin on board, mice will play

- newbies have an idea that when SOMETHING goes pear-shaped, regeneration is the way to go

- griefers now grief through voting

What I wonder is why people still keep going on Klei servers at all, knowing what's going to happen. On non-official servers, there seems to be much less of a fuss and at lest the host has a copy of the world's save files so as to make sure nothing gets lost, even if the world is regenerated by an *******. Is it because the Klei servers have the best ping available? Are there really barely any servers in general with good connection available for some people?

Have you considered the thought of people assuming the official servers are the best out there?

Latency is a big issue for me, dedicated Klei servers have the best ping out there for me and for my friend as well.  I must say all of these responses have been great(first time I've used the forums) and I'm very inclined to stick it out now and keep searching for servers I can use.  Thanks all <3

Quick question for all the mod mages out there, can the votekick-voteregen system be modded to meet our colective interests? If so perhaps we can push to have those in most non klei dedicated servers.

I know disabling the system and having an admin always present is the usual solution for those, but im proposing some sort of middle ground, and it'd work for klei to see how something that was tested and fixed over time works, paving their way for it to be implemented by default.

if that can't that be modded, we are still waiting anyway...

Official Klei servers are the worst. Granted, it's a nice gesture from Klei to give us some official servers hosted by them, but honestly they feel more like a catch basin for trolls than an actual server to play on, there's just so many people who join them just to be annoying, rude, or obnoxious rather than join to play the game... (Sorry :-;)
