Many people are not fond of cheaty custom characters and other cheaty mods like craftable gems, craftable gears, farm 6 silk and craft your own tam' o shanter or krampus sack etc. I guess if you're aiming to replace Gingerbread that your server(s) won't have any of those mods. The next thing to be like Gingerbread's would probably be having a nice and welcoming community and ensuring that the server(s) stay clear of griefers and trolls. I personally would get rid of the voting on the server(s) and employ enough people who can moderate the server(s) at all times to ensure healthy play sessions. The official voting system isn't flawless as it is now. should your server(s) ever have only 1-2 people playing, a team of griefers can take over the server and do whatever they like and most likely kick everyone and reset the world worth of hundreds of days. so to sum things up. a server alone won't make a server popular. It requires a dedicated group of people who keep nasty people out and a nice welcoming community that builds up over time around the server(s). The processor, your hard drive, antivirus software. Mods - just like world settings - must fit each server: test against being overpowered before a mod goes live. AFK Detection is your friend. The penultimate element is checking who joins. My group is by invitation only as this way, I can be sure the members will behave and help me monitor the situation. Finally... have I mentioned active admins? I know it can be a successful one and sorry for using coarse language to you in a thread here in klei forums. It may get nasty and stressful if you really think that you can totally get rid of the griefers. you will never get rid of them. People think that the server does not have griefers but you will always have them and you will get used to live with them as long as you dont put mods like ToNiO does (Cuz this admin really wants to make life easier for himself and trying to get away from the responsibility :p). If you dont want mods, you may try having a really active admins including yourself, use the community page and motivate people to use that page as much as possible cuz that is where you will get your population for the server. People tend to be the part of a big server. I saw you put up couple of good guys that I know. i believe the server will be successful and I wish a good luck. Another thing would be not to abuse your powers except in an emergency situation. Last one is not to offend people like I did. Putting up admins and then taking their power may create discontent between you and him. Quote A little anecdote from myself about the point where you are in right now. I was banned from a server back in the days and the name of the server was "Abusement Park". Reason: I was Webber and joined to this server, came near to a camp with a very low durability torch and it became night (no grass no twig). I arrived to the camp at late dusk. It was winter and 5 pigs attacked me at night beside campfire. Nobody helped me to kill them and then I torched the woods really near to the camp to get rid of them but that turned out to be a massive disaster which totally destroyed the base. So I got banned :D. I opened up a thread in the klei forums for removal of my ban and it was rejected. That motivated me to build up a community there was another to open up the server but that reason never worked out cuz the that person was distant :p. Now seeing a new generation coming out with the similar FATE is kind of interesting. There are couple of reasons that drags me down not to resurrect a server at this stage: 1)Bored of the game. Lately I was never being useful to the community. Despite a lot of people were used to report griefers, I could not catch up with them. I have my apologies to those who took their time and reported in the community page. 2)Personal issues. 3)Having an overtime job and not having enough time time to really go back to the game to be a really useful admin. 4)Not seeing the game as popular as old days.
