froggle_bunwich
Some may already know this, and some may not. Small jerky is better than big jerky for sanity. Both overall give the same amount of hunger. Big jerky is better for the health. So unless u need hp from getting hurt in a battle, small jerky is more worth while as it is easier to get small meat. Small jerky: 12.5 hunger, 8 health, 10 sanity. Dries in 1 day. Also overall a lot easier to get cause frog legs, morsel, etc. Big jerky: 25 hunger, 20 health, 15 sanity. Dries in 2 days. A little harder to get but not that much. Big meat are from neutral mobs such as beefalo which attack back. Lets say we have 2 drying racks for two of each sizes of jerky. i put 2 morsel on 2 drying racks on the left. And 2 meat on 2 drying racks on the right. All at the same time. Both the morsel finish drying one day for small jerky. Giving overall already 25 hunger, 16 health, and 20 sanity. Big meat requires 1 more day. After eating or storing the small jerky away put two more small jerky. 2nd day. Both the other two morsel and two big meats have turned into jerky. The 4 total small jerkys: 50 hunger, 32 health, and 40 sanity. The two big jerkys: 50 hunger, 40 health, and 30 sanity. This is how the two sizes contrast from each other. While they are completely opposite for health and sanity, small jerky gives 32 health while big jerky doesn't contrast with 32 sanity. Not a big difference but still every point counts. I honestly find small jerky to be overall better than big jerky. PanAzej
Is it really easier to get small meats? Every 3 or so days the Pigmen respawn and if you've got some Spider Dens, then you probably have tons of Monster Meat lying around. Feed every piggie with 4 of them and kill (they get stunlocked easily, so you can just hold F and watch them die). That's 2 meats per pig. Also, Koalefants. The more players, the more Koalefants spawn. That's 8 meats per one. You can also kill Tallbirds (a bit more tricky) or Beefalos (Later on they will overpopulate. They always do.) To get small meats you either need tons of traps for Rabbits (if you don't wanna bother killing them manually) or you get them through Frog rain. Or kill Moleworms. Dunno, I can't be bothered to use traps. But yeah, small jerky is pretty good for sanity, I agree. Auth
16 minutes ago, PanAzej said: You can also kill Tallbirds You sick sausage.... Yes. Small jerky is better. However, when I play from my normal playstyle of kill-everything-that-moves-besides-tallbirds, I've noticed I'm swarming in a lot more big meat than small meat, mostly because small meat runs away (or requires actually making things to get, like a fishing rod, bird trap, normal trap, and yes, I'm aware you can kill rabbits and birds without traps, but why would I waste my time running after bunnies and wasting my boomerang uses on birds) and because big meat sources are actually earth shatteringly common when you have little to no morals and decent fighting techniques. So sure, it's better for sanity, but will I commit myself to getting it? Nah. I'll just make tons more drying racks. Mobbstar
Here I am eating bacon n eggs. In my opinion, health is a generally more important attribute. You can restore sanity in a variety of ways, but health requires good food or bandaging/salves (excluding sleep since that recovers both stats for anybody but wickerbottom). froggle_bunwich
Frogs are also good since frog legs are small meat and u can make froggle bunwich (:D) for quick 20 hp. I play webber quite a bit so I kinda always need the extra sanity. Birds? Only when I'm farming Krampii and Azure Feathers. Rabbits? Only when farming for Beard Hair. Moles, Penguins, Vultures? Never really bother. Splumonkeys? Take those damn things away from me. Viru
Why not make bacon and eggs for hp/hunger and do some shrooms or cactus for sanity? Arlesienne
Interesting. I dry anything that (no longer) moves for the prolonged shelf life. I try to prioritise morsels over fish, frog legs and batilisk wings when it comes to small jerky as the latter three have their own recipes (magic tab for the wings). No monster jerky unless I am playing with a great Webber like @Fortie or @W3B-R since I get a birdcage early on (no idea why people say it takes time... papyrus, gold and seeds plus one resident Steve McQueen to go in it - is that really so hard to get?) and thus can refresh meat (first by cooking, then by feeding Steve McQueen). But honestly, killing moleworms by baiting them and Ctrl + F is so easy for me I don't craft that many traps for rabbits these days. For what it's worth, moleworms, rabbits and birds can be fed in your inventory, thus freshening them. My strategy is very crude: I make a (constantly expanding) row of racks and swear to keep them busy all the time. If I get small meats before a big one, I will go dry those. Big meat takes preference when it is available since letting it rot or salvaging it with Steve McQueen is a waste and economising healing is more important than doing that with sanity (even picking flowers helps). Obtaining small meats is much easier. Although getting any meat is not that hard when you're a denizen of the murky recesses, heh. Dīvide et īmpera... Diezen
All I do is make Bacon and Eggs for longer term hunger, because it's easy to get a Monster Meat, Morsel (cooking birds from bird traps), and two eggs. Pierogies for HP because it's easy to make with Monster Meat, 1-2 eggs, 1-2 mushroom (underground, mush rings, etc). Killing bunnymen too and ending up with too many carrots to deal with either. So really any time I ever use drying racks is for the surplus of meats from Koalaphants and converting frog legs into small jerky. Though that's if I even use drying racks at all, and I only really get frog legs from frog rain. I just find both are good for preserving the food for longer periods, but even jerky I stockpile start rotting if there aren't anyone else to mooch off it. So both have their uses.
