Looking for tips for ruins

Recommended Posts

Friend and I have a nice game going. We've just finished our second year in the game, and we've found the ruins. We've got a good overworld base up, a basic cave base set up, with a relatively short run to the ruins.

We've been to the ruins twice, both times narrowly escaping with our lives (well, my friend died, on both occasions, I'm spoiled as a fully upgraded WX). I figure we can have a relatively easy time in the area we're in, if we can get rid of of those damn monkeys, that way we'd only have nightmares to deal with, and even then, only during the nightmare phase.

What is the best way to get rid of the monkeys? Last time we went down, we decided we'd take out all the monkey homes as we went, and it didn't work out so well. Lots of manure-flinging ensued, and I soon found my sanity at 0, and I had to run half way back to cave base before I lost the monkeys, and had to do a big dance around with my nightmares, eating jerky inbetween. We smashed perhaps 8 dens on our trip, but I know there's a lot more - and we just couldn't kill the monkeys, since they run too fast.

So what's the best way to get rid of the monkeys? Will they stop respawning once we take out the dens? Will they pick up gunpowder if try to use it? I feel like that'd be a great way to deal with them, if they didn't. Fire darts/staff?

I realise we can just run straight through the monkeys, but the idea is to have a safe trip home if **** hits the fan, and we have to get out fast.

The worst thing on the ruins are the monkeys on my opinion. Atleast on normal ds,on dst you can kill them using the spike transformation of hutch(1 spear and 1 light bulb to transform him)

The monkeys will try to attack him on the nightmare phase, and because of their health they'll die really fast, careful they dont kill him tho.

We haven't got hutch (I didn't even know he existed, I had to google it). If we found hutch, can you give him multiple spears, so he has more durability?

Given the huge size of the caves, are there alternatives (does gunpowder work, or will the monkeys steal it?)

Would using fire spread across the area, and wipe out a bunch of them?

Not really sure about this (have not played DST in a long time) but during nightmare phase they are melee so you can kill them the old fashion way . Normally I make a run specially to burn their homes after that 2-3 runs to kill all of them - I use ice staff if they are normal (range) and pick them one by one or wait for the nightmare phase to end because they fall asleep after that and you can kill some of them easy during that period .

Make a dark sword (if you can't get a tentacle spike(wigfrid spear is good too) is the next best option) and if you have a Wigfrid in your team fill your inventory with her helms/football helms + 2-3 log suits . That should be enough for melee fight with them . Or you can aways try with tooth traps .

It's a pain to get rid of them but if you can't go around them ... that is the only way ... at least that's the easiest way for me .

Uh sry about giving you a false advice about the tooth traps last time I tried it they just steal them off the ground without activating them ... but that was a really long time ago so I'm not sure if the bug is fixed ...

Anyway that's all I can offer to deal with them . But someone else on the forum might have better ideas .

Ideally, we're just looking for a safe way to do it. Is face tanking it the only option?

NOO NOO NOO worst idea if fighting more than 2 or 1 monkeys. idea is to make them have sync'd attack patterens then kite them off

You probably have already done this when fighting multiple hounds, depth worms and frogs

I usually just ignore them. The actual ruins are usually separate from the monkeys so there is no point in engaging them unless you really want to destroy the thulecite walls that they tend to spawn by.

But if you really want to get rid of them Rock Lobsters are usually able to get the job done.

Another good way is to get a ton of shadow splumonkeys to chase you and lead them to a nightmare rook which can be kited into killing all of the monkeys in a couple charges.

You don't get rid of them. Even if **** hits the fan, they shouldn't be too much of an issue to run through in a hurry, and usually their area tends to not contain anything important so you really have no reason to go to them.

If you are bent on destroying them however, Hutch with the spikey transformation thing should be helpful. Bunnymen could also work especially given that in dst the ruins and caves are in the same level, so its faster to get more bunnies. I'd also prefer a fire staff or something to destroy the dens from a distance, as they contain nothing noteworthy, and this way is safer than going there and starting to hammer the dens.

In regular DS they have their own biome and I mostly just avoided it. It's only the thulecite walls there that have much value. It's really a pain that you have to pass through them to get to the good stuff in DST, but as a rule, I too like to get rid of all the slurpers, clockworks, etc. before trying to collect the ruins loot. It's time consuming, but worth it.

Better safe than sorry. ;)

We (me and a friend who went in the ruins) too smashed the monkeys homes before proceeding further into ruins, cos they are a pain in the rump exactly when you need to run from 2-3 worms each, nightmare monsters or whatnot with little HP or barely any sanity left.

Don't bother with tooth traps as the monkeys won't trigger them (as also stated in the wiki) and if I recall it right they will pick them up instead. We never tried a bee mines field. :)
