Genuine question, have you ever played Terraria? The Wall of Flesh, which activates hardmode, is an entirely optional boss which has to be summoned on purpose by the player. You can literally just not do that and it will never happen.

Edit: Since some people seem to be confused, here's an explanation: In Terraria after you defeat the Wall of Flesh, hardmode will start. No ifs or buts. In dst, however, after you defeat a shard's respective boss, an NPC will appear, asking for symbolical donation. Then a warning message will pop-up asking you if you are really sure about this and only then will the rifts activate. That very much isn't uncompromising

does anyone even not turn rifts on after defeating the final bosses? the rift items are so useful that staying without rifts is probably the actual hard mode, with rifts being normal/easy mode

This is such a funny hair to split in a situation where both games never force you to fight the boss anyway

The optional way of activating Terraria's hardmode is by fighting the boss. The optional way of activating DST's hardmode is by giving the necessary resource to the NPC that spawns after fighting the boss. Neither of these are more or less optional than the other, and neither is more "uncompromising", the point of no return is just a bit farther. Four to five seconds farther, in fact.

If the Wall of Flesh put a prompt saying "are you sure you want to enter hardmode?" after defeating it, then would hardmode now be an optional thing that you never have to do just because it's SLIGHTLY more of a choice?

moon rifts are annoying, therefor its easyer to not have to deal with random plants that attack you everywhere
