Character Origins ?

Recommended Posts

Alright so I was re-watching the DS trailer of Wilson's origin (how bored do you have to be to rewatch that video for the 400th time) and a thought struck me , How did the other cast of characters appear in the Puppet Masters domain ?

Does Klei mention this anywhere ?

I know that Wilson was looking for sciency answers and got dun diddly goofed , but i'd seriously love to know the others story's.

Wouldn't Wickerbottom know better ?

Who built WX ?

Wilson is the only one with a confirmed backstory, but there are some solid pieces of evidence that could reveal the others' stories:

-Wendy and Abigail are theorized to be Maxwell's nieces, as "twins" are mentioned in a letter from Maxwell's brother Jack

-WX-78 is theorized to be built by a man named Robert Wagstaff, the same man who built the radio Maxwell uses, which is a PR-76.

-Wes is theorized to be the clown from the travelling circus Maxwell was on a train with when he found the codex umbra

-Wolfgang is theorized to be the strongman from that same travelling circus

-Wilbur is theorized to be a monkey from that that same travelling circus

All of this information can be found on the Don't Starve wiki page for the William Carter puzzles.

And I actually made a theory that Wes worked for or was blackmailed into service by the loan sharks that William owed debt to and was responsible for the train wreck and his disappearance, which is why Maxwell hates him so much and trapped him in the box. I had a whole thread explaining it, but it's been long dead and archived by now.

It's probably not true anyway.

now watch it's going to end up being true

My theory for Willow is pretty dark...but I guess I'll put it out here. Note that most of this isn't canon information, however it was all very common for children/women in Willow's particular situation for things like this to occur.

-

As we know, Willow is canonically an orphan. Her parents died when she was very young; she likely doesn't even remember them. From there, she was sent to an orphanage, where she lived with several other girls and was horrendously mistreated. This would have taken place in the early 1900's, when homes for children were still often very abusive and they were never really taken care of. It's also quite likely due to the time range that she worked in some kind of workhouse. (Oliver Twist, anybody? Annie? No?)

In between the horrible mistreatment at the orphanage, Willow did participate in the Girl Scouts and she excelled with flying colors. It is canon information as well that she has obtained every single badge, which is an extremely impressive feat.

Her fascination with fire didn't start until her later years. Willow was never adopted out, and instead was released at the age of 17 when she was considered a legal adult.

Either way, she didn't make a whole lot of money and lived on the street. Her only possessions that were valuable to her was her beloved teddy, Bernie, and her semi-automatic lighter...the tool that would lead to her fascination with fire.

It was all she had for a long time, her only source of warmth and comfort. How could one not become obsessed when that's all you have? Need turned to fascination, and then obsession. Willow's sanity was struggling due to her situation and fire became her only outlet and relationship. She didn't get along well with other adults; her childish disposition made it very difficult for her.

One frigid night, she burned down something an old warehouse. Willow would have never burned down a home or a place that was still being used or inhabited, and while her intention was never to harm someone, the fire spread and there were consequences to her actions.

While authorities wanted to charge Willow with arson, it became clear to them that night that she was not mentally stable, so she was immediately sent to an asylum for treatment. There began the most horrible years of her life. Their ‘tests’ were painful and unnecessary, and she was treated less equally than an animal. There was no kindness, no Bernie, no fire. Willow remained there for quite some time.

They said she’d been cured, but within a day of being released the itch returned.

"Say, pal, you look like you're having a bit of trouble."

A place where she could burn without the consequence of people who don't understand or the risk of harming someone. She’d have her lighter; changed by fate to burn for eternity without falter, and her Bernie’s  paw in her hand. What more could she possibly ask for?

She hastily made the deal.

It seemed like hours when Willow began return to reality. Cool, crisp air filled her lungs and the sun’s rays stroked her face as her eyes fluttered open.

“Say, pal, you don’t look so good.”

“You’d better find something to eat before nightfall.”

If anyone wants to give any input on this, feel free. I love when people help me story build. I just wish I knew more about her. I adore this character so much.

Birdcage (occupied, sleeping)- "Stupid bird. Wake up!"

Birdcage (occupied, bird dead) - "At least he's quiet now."

Spider and Spider Warrior- "Maybe I could kill it... with FIRE."

Krampus- "Stay back, you big jerk!"

Slurtle- "I want to blow it up!"

Beefalo- "What a disgusting, hairy beast!"

Beefalo (sleeping)- "They look even dumber when they're sleeping."

Baby Beefalo- "Even the babies are ugly."

Baby Beefalo (sleeping)- "WAKE UP!"

Bunnyman and Beardlord- "Ugh. They look so stupid."

Frog- "He's too damp to burn."

 Willow is mean.

Is she?

Also, it's completely invalid because 70% of those creatures you just quoted are monsters. She has every right to be mean to those. :B

She will just burn them instead. She likes some of the critters, but she mostly wants to burn and destroy most things you come across.

Again, 70% of the things you quoted are monsters. I'd be pretty mean too if a huge red goat-man tried to come steal my stuff.

7 of them are not monsters. Frogs and Slurtles could be arguable to make 9, as they get aggressive if you mess with them. Only monsters on that list are Krampus and Spiders.

Willow isn't pure evil, but she is far from being anywhere close to innocent or misunderstood. She is pretty mean spirited and crazy. I look through fandom artwork, and it's usually fans that make her to be more friendly and make her out to be a stronger survivor. (One artist has her as the leader. Over Wickerbottom?)

I'm sorry, I guess I just see more than a 'crazy mean spirited pyromaniac'. I relate to Willow a lot and I understand how hard it is to have a mental problem that you have no control over.

I don't really believe that she's heartless. A lot of her quotes are silly, charming, and she actually can be pretty friendly. <3 But I understand.

Frogs

So standing near spiders and getting attacked makes them a monster but OHHH NOT FROGS AMIRITE!?!?!?! (sorry if this seems a bit agressive it's not suppose to be. :x)

Wat I need to see this at once!

No, she isn't heartless. I feel people tend to view her as nicer than she really is though. And people seem to make Wilson dumber to.

True. I actually like the frogs and spiders both. I'd rather kill the rabbits than either of them, but spider farming is very useful.

And the artwork was from someone on Tumblr going by "Ask the Survivors." There's also tons of artwork on Tumblr where Willow is a big tough survivor and Wilson is wimpy and dumb. I can understand different views on characters, but people seem to make Wilson as smart as the pigs.

It's very obvious that life dealt her one too many bad hands. I like to make it very clear to people that pyromania is never a disease that you have on it's own; it is ALWAYS behind something deeper, usually depression or sever anxiety. So in reality, no - she isn't just a crazy, awful person who wants to burn everything down.

(Not even trying to be the lord of angst here. I'm just speaking out as someone who suffers from mental illness as well.)

As for that second part though, I've gotta agree. I'm so tired of people making Wilson into a practically useless babbling idiot when he's one of the most canonically intelligent characters in the game. Sure, there's nothing wrong with Willow saving his butt once in a while, but the fandom has dumbed him down to the point where Wes would probably win in an arm wrestle against him. It's pretty irritating to say the least.

I really do like your passion for Willow, it's always good to see how someone can bond with characters. Willow isn't at the top of my list for Don't Starve for sure, but I do love the entire cast. I do wish they'd make her more productive than she is now for the team. I have played and probably will play more Wes even though he offers nothing to the team, but at least player know how and general skills can help make up for it. But in the end, me picking anyone else I could provide that general service and more cause of their perks. I feel Willow is lacking in flare and places her just above Wes in terms of "Does me team need?" But in the end, it's who you like that matters. Though WX... that's probably the one I'd not want to see 3 join as.

And yes, I don't mind any character having to save/help any other character. But, most of the artwork anymore seems to be Wilson being dumb and another character (often Willow) having to save him or tease him. Wickerbottom, Wilson, and Maxwell are probably the smartest of the group.

And for personal thoughts on origins. I always wondered on the history of Wes. And I ponder whether keeping Wes trapped was punishment or actually Maxwell trying to keep him from getting himself killed. Maybe some William snuck into his thoughts while he watched the mime struggling to survive in the trials of adventure mode. Or was Maxwell angry Wes couldn't free him or did Wes even decide to NOT free Maxwell out of anger he was tricked by someone he trusted.

@DextersComicLaboratory is a good friend of mine. He has always, in my opinion, given one of the best portrayals of Wilson I have ever seen. :\

Not once has he ever 'dumbed Wilson down' so I really don't understand why this is here.

Also, I don't see how him accidentally spraying some hair glue into his eyes has anything to do with him being completely helpless. Nothing wrong with some good ol comedy once in a while, lol.

I always imagined that Wickerbottom read something she really ought not to have and ended up there.

Wigfrig I always imagine went looking for treasure in the wrong cave/place.

Wendy- followed Abigail who decidedly lead her astray.

Maxwell- Captured by the previous captive of this world.

Willow- shouldn't have set fire to that book/door/item

Wolfgang- pretending to be brave will get you into bad situations

Wes- you shouldn't have tried to help Wolfgang

Spiderface- you were born a monster, deal.

Wilson- Science and magic don't mix

If Wilson's origin video is anything to go by, everyone was promised their greatest wish by Maxwell but in the end they were tricked and thrown into the DS world. Kinda like a "deal with the devil" thing. I personally believe their "super powers" are somewhat related to what they wished and ironically enough, they all got what they wanted.

Spoiler

Maxwell was a failure magician and "sold his soul" to become famous and powerful, but in the end he lost charlie and became a slave.

Wilson was a failure scientist and Maxwell gave him the knowledge to build things he would never dream of. What does that have to do with super fast beard growth? Well, i think Wilson never got any knowledge, he just didn't suceed because he had no faith in himself (or maybe he always wanted a beard...)

Willow has pyromania, she an orphan and presumably burned her orphanage. Considering she got into her early 20s without an adoption she probably stopped caring about it and just wanted to watch the world burn, so maxwell made her beloved lighter infinite and Willow immune to fire.

Wolfgang isn't very smart, he wants to be the mightiest in the world and that's it, so he gets the ability to achieve ultimate mightyness by giving him super human strength and speed.

Wendy sounds like someone who gave up her own life after Abigail's death. I'd say it's pretty obvious her wish was to see her sister again and she did see her again but... not how she wanted...

Woodie is a simple lumberjack, despite his curse he seems to be a normal guy, not someone who would talk to his axe (if you look his quotes, he never directly talks to lucy). I believe Lucy was someone important he lost and his wish was to bring her back but all he got was a talking axe. When Woodie chops with another axe, it becomes a "new lucy" which means it's is just a normal axe that gets "possessed" by Lucy.

Wes- A lot of people seem to think Wes  was very important to the plot or knew amazing secrets but i think he is just unlucky. He tried to mimic Maxwell for fun and got locked in a cage. It also makes sense considering he has no powers (no wishes granted).

Wicker- She seems to know even more than maxwell about the DS world, i'd say she is the only person (IMO) that knew what she was getting into but went in anyway just because "Knowledge is power!" and she won't rest until she learns everything.

Wigfrid- Was an actress that took her role so seriously she actually thinks she is viking and would rather starve to death instead of eating a carrot. Her wish was to become a real warrior and as such, she becomes a very strong and capaple fighter.

Webber- He says Maxwell was going to help "them" but was tricked. People can't survive inside of spiders so Webber should be dead, and he actually is dead when you unlock him (you have to use his skull in a grave). It's likely Webber was attacked by a spider and Maxwell offered to "save his life".

Not sure about shipwrecked since Walani/Warly/Wilbur powers and quotes are bland and don't reveal much.
