Inside the bottle, the shadow rippled, before locking its eyes on Noctimus. As they were both shadow creatures, they had no issue with understanding one another in conversation. Words, raspy and harsh, echoed directly inside Noctimus' mind...

"What do you want from me, runt?"

Noctimus backed a small amount away from the bottle. "Listen. I understand. But. . . what else would you do? What purpose would you have? Would you go back to them? I doubt it. They're using you. They don't care about how you feel. They don't care that about you at all. But here, people do. People care about you. Without you, Ma is just. . .nothing."

Eventually, Kate crawled over to the plush. She knelt over him, examining him for a few long moments, but he did not move. He was dead. It killed him. She was shaking, and flames started to flicker back up again. No, she had to keep it under control. She couldn't lose control. She wanted that thing to hurt, but she couldn't lose control.

"Kate, calm down." Kade knelt beside her. "He might not be gone yet. We can still get him back." That's right. The eyes in the bottle. Noctimus. They could put him back.

Slowly and carefully, she pulled up the nails and cradled the lifeless doll, forgetting about the bleeding gashes on her fingers before shuffling off in the direction Noctimus went.

The shadow paused, then began laughing in an off-putting manner. "Small wonder they left you behind, runt." It swirled around its bottle once, then continued.

"Look at you. Caring about these worthless husks. How pitiful." It clicked its tongue. "You disgust me."

Noctimus shook the tears out of his eyes. If this shadow wasn't going to listen to emotion, he'd make an appeal to reason. "Listen...I need your help if my friends, masters, and I are ever going to escape this world. And without my help, you're not going to leave that bottle."

"You little brat!" The shadow practically spat its words at Noctimus, seething with rage. "Do you know what I would do to you if I weren't inside this-"

It paused, realizing the meaning of what Noctimus had said. After a minute of reconsideration, it turned to him, adopting a tone that was only slightly friendlier than before. "You're trying to escape this world, you say?"

Noctimus shuddered when he thought of what the shadow would do to him if it wasn't imprisoned in the glass cage. "Y-yeah. . .We're collecting the. . .shards right? That's what they're called?" he said, his voice significantly more scared then before.

By now, the shadow's anger had subsided entirely, replaced by interest. "Ah, yes. The Shards. When you combine all four of them with their base, they form...a portal out of this realm." It chuckled. "A shadow such as myself cannot pass through the portal. I assure you, if we could, we would have left long ago." It paused, then began to muse aloud. "But, if you were to, say, bind one to an object on the material plane..."

It was silent for a few seconds before it spoke again. "Listen, runt. I will...cooperate with you. You will take me to that rabbit, and I will rejoin it. You will have your precious 'ma' back, and I will leave alongside your group."

"Understood?"

"Catch? I have already stated my terms. I will exit the world alongside you. And in order to reach that end, I will offer...full use of my services to that filthy rabbit of yours."

"Now, do we have a deal?"
