The Pirate Hat is way too easy to get

When I heard that it had the same sanity restoration rate as the Tam O'Shanter I genuinely expected to have to kill a tough pirate enemy for it, likely with a similar low drop rate to MacTusk. Instead, it's easier to craft than the Snakeskin Hat (only needs a single piece of rope, rather than a whole straw hat, and a single piece of silk rather than the 6 required for a top hat) and vastly more useful. More useful than almost any other available hat for almost any other situation, really, unless you specifically want overheating protection. (It's not Eyebrella-tier waterproof, but it could cap off an outfit involving an umbrella or snakeskin raincoat.)  With this recipe, why would anyone ever make top hats when the Pirate Hat exists? It even has the same mild water resistance. Skeletons can be a little hard to find in the early game, but you'll eventually make plenty from your own deaths. Same for spiders, but it takes less silk to make a Pirate Hat than even a fishing rod or a bug net.

This is balanced by the pirate hat lasting 2 days, as opposed to the top hat's 8 days, and the Tam's 25 days.

 

Not saying it's a good enough reason not to tweak the pirate hat, but that is exactly what crossed my mind when I read the OP. I never craft a pirate hat for sanity. I'm happy when I find the occasional boon with the free pirate hat because that means I get to craft the pirathatitator without having to worry about that component. The reason being it melts on my head. I just look at it and it gets used up. Not worth my time and ressources, not worth repairing either (might as well craft a new one eh?).

 

Didn't realise it wore out that fast. I still don't think the recipe's balanced against the spoil time (if you found a lot of skeletons or died several times you'd be able to keep up a steady stream of pirate hats by midgame, assuming you didn't need those bone shards for something higher-priority), but with that context I agree that it doesn't need as big of a nerf.

I honestly like it as is since this world is more "wet" than even ROG and you're constantly losing sanity. Plus you can't really wear it regularly like a top hat because as others said above, it only lasts for 2 days.

You can leave crabs to spoil in their traps and they turn into spoiled fish, which you can hammer down for more bone shards.

...I found out about that on the forums earlier (couldn't figure out how to get rid of spoiled fish when I was playing) and I was going to try that, but then I forgot about it. *facepalm*

That's where I found it out too! ^^ I was desperate for bone shards, I thought you needed a Captain's Hat to avoid getting wet from waves.

Both the Pirate Hat and Sand Castle are way too OP and because of them sanity becomes a non-issue in SW. Then again hunger is a non-issue thanks to the Monster Meat/Seaweed combo and health is a non issue because of the 1 Ice/3 Limpets recipe that restores 60 HP.

 

On the other hand the second part of the volcano season is almost impossible to manage without relying too much on luck. Yeah, it's an alpha :D

The boneshards thing makes it a bit non-renewable, I haven't been able to have long runs but from what I have seen there's a limited amount of note bottles, so yeah, eventually your pirate hat, snake skin suit/hat, captains hat and any other boneshard using recipe supply will run out.

That is true, but the Pirate hat has 20% water resistance

and it makes the radius of your map vision 20% bigger. (when you are in the boat).

 

It is way to easy to make for what it is.

 

The recipe should be something like that:

 

- 2x Bone shards (it has crossbones on it, so it should be atleast 2)

- 1x Rope

- 3x Silk

 

Or what would be even better:

 

- 2x Bone shards

- 3x Rope

- 5x Silk

 

But raise the durability from 2 days to 5-6 days.

You get bone shards when you hammer the bones of spoiled crabs.
