XirmiX
There should be a limit as to how many spider dens can be produced or placed in a server, say 20 being the maximum on default settings, because the amount of spiders that come out of the nests and roam around after I shoot their nest with fire staff give me a hell ton of lag and I'm playing on my super computer with 16 gb ram! I die because of these lags and I even had my prediction turned off! If the spiders overpopulate, it becomes too hard to manage, not for you, but for your computer. Please developers, deal with this! Say if theere are 20 spider dens across the world, then the next spider queen that spawns would not leave a tier 1 spider nest behind her. Spider queens hence would count as 1 spider den as well. And Webber, if attmepting to place down a spider egg whilst there are 20 eggs across the world would say "We don't want to overpopulate". This would also stop griefers from placing spider eggs in places such as the portal, spawns and bases. Please Klei, I beg you! I died twice because of the lag that hundreds of spiders gave me! Mario384
Fun Fact: While there is no world limit on spiders, there is a limit on how many nests can be close to each other. If a Spider Queen emerges and sees there's too many nests, she won't leave a den behind and will travel away in order to repopulate somewhere else. XirmiX
So... What's the nest limit? And then how do we deal with the spider lag problem? Also the lag only happens to clients, not hosts. It happens even if you have a super-hyper-ultra-mega-giga-terra humongous computor like I do and have a good host as well as good ping. So, this is a "bug" that needs polishing so that clients don't get lag from so much stuff going on in one place. This has happened to me when I've been sitting in a big base full of stuff! Asparagus
Go as Wendy and tank every tier 3 spider dens you can find... now you have effectively reduced the spider population... keep the spider egg sacks for emergencies... or kindling O__O Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57537-spider-overpopulation-problem/#findComment-668351 Share on other sites

XirmiX
Burn them.As a matter of fact; I did! I firestaffed their dens. It's the movement of hundreds of spiders that's causing the lag. in fact, even like 25 or so spiders in one place can cause you lag (not as bad to make you unable to move, but slows you down quite a bit). So yeah, client lag problems. Either Klei needs to improve their programming or get better servers, because atm the amount of spiders you can get to late game is devastating for clients. DejaVuZXY
I agree to OP, this is a serious problem (Try running a Wilderness server while having the "pause on empty" option disabled). The same goes for Beefalos and if Spiders and Beefalos get together in a "fight arena" somewhere randomly, it's a dead server. You can have Quantum Computer and it still causes lag due to the game itself not being able to handle the things. Although Klei did say they improved performance a lot in the upcoming Cave Build, but the amount of all the monsters in the world should be configurable value somewhere (for each monster). Sounds like it wasn't so much your computer struggling as it would be the host's, which would affect things on your end. I've noticed the difference between when I host (my computer is fairly good) and some of my friends. My internet might be spotty but actual server lag isn't as common when I'm hosting. I believe they look for 5 or more nests. If there's 5 nearby, they don't leave a spider den and move away from them. Also a fun fact, if you keep the spider queen nearby overpopulated dens, she will not burrow. werlpolf
How could it? My computer has 16gb ram, excellent graphics card and mother board, a cooling system with like 3 fans or so and I had good ping and the host was good. How could it be my computer's problem?! Thats simply because of the scripts not running in parallel, which are responsible for the mob-activities. Why programmed sequentially? Less developing-time and the resulting performance is in the most cases more then enough. I saw also in the endless worlds, that you can only survive as webber, since EVERYWHERE are spiders and spider-warriors. And these spiders don't ve a den. Therefore, my suggestion is simply to remove spiders, who don't ve a den and last longer then 3 days. The dens are not a problem. EDIT: the amount of spiders that come out of the nests and roam around after I shoot their nest with fire staff give me a hell ton of lag My PC can deal with around 100 mobs without a problem on a screen. If this is always like that on your hardware, check out your mods maybe or try first a local server, since sending 100 mobs information over the internet might not be optimal in the current DST doesn't matter how well the ping/connection is. Quyzbuk
OP is definitely not alone on this. For servers that have been running long enough to have this problem, I usually take a fire rod as well and go burn down anything with more than 1 nest per 3 screens of movement space. Servers don't always like that though and I do get lag spikes into disconnects on occasion. The couple hundred wilderness servers with 1000-10000+ days though are just flat out unplayable, not only because of the spiders and lack of resources, but because the damn thing just can't handle it and will hold players in place while the world still maintains free movement. I agree that at least in DST, a limit should be placed on spiders as well because of this.
