TheNightmare
hello,i play as maxwell and i survived 46 days till now,i started in autumn and now summer is very close, spring will end soon...so i had 3 miner hats with 0% fuel and i am lucky to have a cave very near to my base so i decided to go into the cave to get light bulbs for my miner hats.i searched like 10 minutes and i didn't found bulbs, but then,i found something wich looks like a cave base, with a tent, ice flingomatic with spoiled food,a chest with useful stuff like silk and wood,a science machine and 2 improved farms......and that base is near a swamp with lots of light bulbs (i was so happy to see that)..I have a few questions for you,as i play as Maxwell and we all know his sanity regeneration..i want to move into my cave base during the 20 summer days,i build a fire pit into that base,2 drying racks (i'll build more) ,2 new chest,1 crock pot (i'll make one more) and i plan building more things into that base.so here are my questins:1)can i have bees in my cave base?wiil they produce honey if i put some flowers near them..2)if i build 2-3 pig houses near my base, will the pigs get out during the day?3)if i remove the cave floor and replace it with marble floor or wooden floor, will that worm thing wich is very dangerous can attack you when you are on the floor?4)i'm playng RoG,so we all know in caves and ruins there are weather effects..i know you can freeze there so i'll bring my puffy vest with me and beefalo hat ,but can you overheat during the summer there?if you can,i'll definitely build an endothermic fire pit.5)if i am in the cave all the summer would my base burn,or i don't have to worry about it?So i plan to move in my cave base during the summer,it is a good thing that i have a pond ten feets near my base so i will fish and i found that maxwell likes cooked monster meat, because of his sanity regeneration (it actually decrease hp point by 3,but if you don't have food it is good)i'll bring with me during the summer 40 grass,40 saplings,20 logs,20 pine cones(i will plant trees),10 berry bushes,10 grass tufs and 10 sappling tuffs (to plant them,i will bring 40 manure to fertilize),2-3 tallbird eggs in extreme cases,my umbrella and my rain hat,a thermal stone, some food and other useful stuffso: 6)any more sugestions to build into my cave base/any more sugestions what should i bring with me there during the summer?thank you Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57252-living-in-caves/ Share on other sites

Auth
I wouldn't go in the caves. The lack of head armor and constant mobs are painful. Sure you won't have to deal with giants, but what's the point in the DLC then? Rellimarual
I always spend summers in the caves. It's not difficult at all and you hardly need all that stuff -- especially the bees. But when you find an already-established camp like that, it's usually next to some potential danger -- in this case the pond, which will produce frogs. Put some traps around it and don't build anything else too close, though, and you should be fine. And you will get frog's legs. Overheating is a problem -- don't bring the vest or beefalo hate -- but I usually go with a floral shirt, which also gives you a sanity boost. You may be OK without it since you're playing as Maxwell. A cooling amulet or thermal stone works too. The main thing I bring is a bird cage because that will turn monster meat into eggs. Three monster meats and one frog leg = bacon and eggs, so you can live well off of just what you can hunt down there. I'm terrible at kiting and even I can successful kite a depth worm. It's only when you have a lot of them that you run into trouble, but you can enlist either bunnymen (by running to their village) or rock lobsters to help you fight the extras. I confess I also use the lantern glitch to light my cave base, so I don't usually build an endothermic pit. While you're down there, your base is safe from smoldering, which only happens when the player is nearby. That's the whole reason I spend all summer in the caves, besides the cave camp being kinda fun. You can also collect lots of easy minerals while you're down there. Note: there will be hounds when you finally surface, so be prepared. absimiliard
I might only bring 20 manure and bring some boneshards instead, with logs that's buckets of poop, which are pretty efficient for fertilizing. Odal
Spiders nests are the best source of food in the game imo. If there's not already any down there bring some with you. Also make a bird cage so you can turn the excess monster meat into eggs for meatballs. One piece of advice I wish I would have known with my cave base is that I should just make it near the bulb plants. I don't use the mod to be able to move them, so I think having my base closer to them would have been better. I think you'll find surviving in the cave to be much easier than the surface, especially if you don't have trouble with the depth worms. Being Maxwell makes it even easier. emerphish
Man, the caves are so much fun, even though I have not once made it through a depth worm attack and lose less than 250 health (WX-78 master race, or WX-78 crutch?) I am getting better at them. In summer it takes maybe 2 days to overheat in there (no clothes), you freeze a little faster than that in the winter, however. If you have the bearger vest than you can slap that on and negate the sanity loss and you lose hunger 25% faster (there is food in the caves, but it is not at all plentiful). FYI nothing aboveground will burn if you are underground. TemporaryMan
I'd suggest building the rabbit hutches further away than the pig houses. They're not very forgiving about people carrying meat. As for bee boxes, I've read that they will work if you build them far enough away from your base, but they'll only produce 1 honey each day. Wish I could give more advice, but I've never built a cave base myself. I just stock enough food to last 3-6 days, ransack the place and return to the surface when my inventory's full. Although... Your pig houses give me an idea. If you have enough that you don't need all the pigs for emergency defenses and if you can produce spare monster meat farming spiders, you could turn a pig into a werepig whenever you need a new ham bat or football helmet. As long as you replace the ham bat whenever it gets stale, it'll free inventory slots that you would have needed to fill with spare weapons, and you won't need to worry about running out of weapons in an emergency. TheNightmare
i found another cave base but it is in a very bad place, with bats everywhere,i took the useful things from the chest like silk, gold and i decided to let it,my other cave base is in a better spot,my cave base have light during the day and dusk but this one is very badjust build 2 rabbit houses near my base so they can protect me (i am very carefull to not have meat in my inventory) and my pigs just killing every frogs who came from the pond and i found the entrance to the ruins, looks like i build my cave base in the perfect cave here's the new cave base that i found : Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57252-living-in-caves/#findComment-665569 Share on other sites
Cyde042
I would not recommend missing out the first in-game year by staying in the caves, I strongly recommend getting a deerclops eye for the eyebrella at least, it will save you during both rain and during summer. Bearger vest is also quite recommended for local management. But anyway: Whenever I create a new world, to get enough resources for pig houses, I go on an expedition with my hammer and destroy Pig Heads and Pig Houses (that are alone in the wild, no one will miss them). But before destroying the house, I wait till it's day so the pig is outside, kill him, then destroy the house, this way the house will spawn another piggy upon destruction but be careful cause he might eat the pig skins like the cannibals they really are. Why do this? To create a pig village underground of course, for optimal layout, you'll need 6 houses and enough monster meat to ensure werepig spawns - so 24 monster meat every 4 days. You can easily get this by planting some spider eggs near bunny villages, but you need to be like 2 screens away max for the spiders and bunnies to be active. Before you get overwhelmed by depth worms, there is a guide on the wiki how to make a rock lobster pen to take care of the worms. And since you're maxwell, maybe you should carry a life-giving amulet? Can't really say how well it will workout but 75 HP and night armor won't help if you will get stun-locked. And pro tip. If you panic, just press escape and analyze the situation.
