Pan Flute/Sleepy Time Smackdown

Recommended Posts

Currently there is nothing you can do except fight back and kill them. I've never found being put to sleep to do anything to me except make it impossible to escape a fight or chase someone running from a fight. Being put to sleep grants the attacker one free hit on you, after which you will be jolted to your feet able to fight back, if you find yourself stunlocked attempt to break free, if you can't then the lag was not on your side. However if you manage to break free it becomes a simple matter of avoiding a stunlock until you cease being tired and can run again. Then the fight resumes as per usual. If they spam the Flute/Book in order to gain multiple free hits then congrats to them, they might just end up killing you.

Don't forget the ice staff has near enough the same effect as the Flute/Book/Darts. Allowing one free hit per 4 uses. (Of which it has 20)

I fail to see how abilities that allow you to get free hits are "balanced" in a game where whoever gets the most hits in the fastest wins.

But hey, I don't really think that DST was ever intended to be completely balanced where PvP is concerned.  DS is about how harsh and unfair the world can be and the struggle to survive despite this.

I tend to see the PvP in the same light.  After all, everyone has access to the exact same game mechanics.

You can easily survive anyone who just has pan flute and melee weapons if you have armor and melee weapons yourself. It gets a lot more difficult to survive if they have friends or advanced ranged weapons along with the pan flute. Also, pan flute is a faster cast than sleepy time so you can't depend on using sleepy time.

report option to Klei?

As far as I can tell Klei is ok-ish with people cheating in that way for the time being. Hopefully that changes in the future. But for now the only thing you can do with those few people that take PvP too seriously is to just try to make them mad, most of the time don't even kill them.

On one of my last servers we built a prison around the Dragonfly Arena with a telelocator focus in the center. And whenever we found someone that was clearly using a macro we just put them in there and forgot about them. (If they aren't going to PvP properly then why should I? heh)

@TrueAlphaOmega, I've seen them. And I don't get why you would promote use of the macro if you're against it. It's certainly harmed PvP much more than it's leveled the playing field. If I were you I'd stop trying to get more people to use it, it's just getting more and more people banned from my and many others servers.

Lets leave it at that since this is starting to get off topic, and to aid in maintaining that topic I'll throw in my thoughts again.

A parry button would be interesting but things like that are difficult to properly implement into a singleplayer driven PvE game without massive changes to compensate for the unique feature, I don't see it happen any time soon as Klei is busy enough working on adding the rest of the base games PvE content which will be followed by Through the Ages. Maybe then they'll focus a bit more on PvP but I don't really see DST becoming a game people love for the PvP aspect, I feel it will always revolve heavily around PvE with PvP remaining something that doesn't quite fit but does have it's place.

players always have to deal with ban-happy admins. That's why dedicated servers without admins are so nice.

If you want a real survival experience in DST then play on NY or San Fran official severs where there are no admins. Warning though, they can be pretty brutal so I would not recommend it for newbies. The better players in the community frequent those two servers.

Oh, believe me, he's not against it at all.

I am against it.  The best way to get it fixed imho is to give it to everyone.  I'm already seeing threads pop up talking about how lame it is.

EDIT: That's not to say I won't use it obviously.  I hope lots of people use it so that it will get a higher priority in the "things to fix" list.

I guess I should thank you and your friends Flare since it was you guys that showed me this lame tactic in the first place.  Sorry about making it easily available to everyone, but I really think it should be fixed asap.

maybe a craftable item to cover up you're ears.. just saying. something to wear on the head.

Funny Story, I thought Picking up Mandrakes would cause your character to die because of it's shriek... so I made Rabbit Earmuffs and put them on before picking one up... I wasted 2 game days for a non-existent function...

:T

But I wish it was implemented... just to give the rabbit earmuffs more purposes even after you have the ability and resources to make the coveted Beefalo Hat...

I would really like to see some sort of Pan Flute nerf. And also some sort of Parry option. It would make things much more interesting, in my opinion.

PRESS F NOW TO GET A MASSIVE ADRENALINE BOOST AND GO SHOVE THAT PANFLUTE UP THE PLAYER'S NOSE

- Any sort of Panflute counter, probably

I think it's totally unbalanced. That's why I made Pan Flute mod for hosts and servers.
although I disagree with some of the changes this mod does(like the increased frequency of pan flutes or the new grave items), I must admit that the musician sleeping part is pretty spot on. Good Job, sir.

Thanks. :)

Note that "some of the changes" can be disabled in options.
