What's the dead tree for?

So there are trees that look burned except it's brown not black. If you hack it it falls to bits liek a burnt tree and drop a pine cone, but the bits don't dissapear. What are they for?

-When first planted, they're small and give a single log only. Then, the stump can be dug up to give a second log.

-After a while, they get a bit bigger, and when cut down will yield two logs, one pine cone, and a stump that can be dug up for a third log.

-Then they get even bigger, and yield 3 logs, 2 pine cones, and a stump that gives a fourth log.

-After this, they turn into the trees you describe, where they give only a pine cone, but the stumps can be dug up to give a log.

-After some more time has passed, these bare, dead-looking trees will become small trees again, and the cycle will repeat.

Another fun fact: even though the trees are at the end of their life cycle and effectively dead - until they suddenly morph into baby trees again - the Treeguards don't like it when you chop them down. I thought I could avoid the wrath of Optimus Pine by cleaning out his forest of the dead wood a bit, but no luck: he came after me all the same. :/

I've only had one Treeguard come after me, as I make it a regular habit to plant pinecones after cutting down a few trees. The only time I got one was when I forgot to plant pinecones and cut down a whole forest before replanting.

Yeah, I've also only encountered it once since I get into the habit of replanting a pine cone after cutting one down in the same spot.

Nope, trees don't regrow unless you plant pine cones.
