Hex
Well, hello Klei Entertainment Forums.I've bought the game, Don't Starve, just under an hour ago and I'm thrilled with the artistic design and uncanny sense that the game holds. I find it to be something beautifully designed whilst holding a perfectly balanced concept that is perfected to something that I'd expect to see coming straight from Tim Burton's mind.I'm not trying to flatter you, just letting you know that I think I've struck a gold mine. So to the developers of this game - Thank you, for giving me an intelligent and artistic game to play through and invest some time into. Now to everyone, seeing as this is such a great game, I don't really want to have anything spoiled. I don't want to know all the secrets and I want to figure a relative amount out for myself. But I would appreciate it if you guys could shed some light on the game for me, in a sense of - what do you enjoy doing in the game, what do you suggest I do, as a new player, to get the most out of my experience?I'm open to all concepts and ideas, tell me all that you feel is necessary. Just don't tell me anything that you feel may spoil some of the surprises or make the experience less enjoyable than it couldn't of been.I think that I may spend some time on this forum as you all seem like a bunch of kind and smart people. I look forward to getting to know you guys, feel free to drop me a PM, I'm always up for a nice chat.
Critter79
Experiment as much as possible. I played the game for a full week before joining the forums so that I wouldn't accidentally find out anything I wanted to discover on my own through trial and error. 501105
Welcome to the forums Hex and welcome to the world of Dont Starve. The art style of the game truly is something unique and is probably close to how a true Tim Burton game would look like. The world is deliciously strange with a bit of dark humour in it. I think that avoiding any spoilers about the game is a great idea, since discovering the unknown makes up such a large part of the fun. To get the most out of your experience I would suggest simply doing what you want to do, dont be afraid to die and make mistakes, you will learn a lot from them. Try different styles of survival and different kinds of food. I love to be a farmer and live of my trusty pumpkins. It also a lot of fun to built up a collection of all the hats. There is plenty of discussion to be found on the forum, so before you know it you will be addicted, have fun. 501105
You can get dung/manure by feeding pigmen certain kinds of food like berries, there are also some big hairy beesties out there that like to poop a lot.

TylerTheDragon
Your pretty much there , people use different styles to beat the game , but the way I do it is to have some spare meat effigy's (which is something you can make if you find meat and shave your beard every 12 or so days) and have a fire pit so you don't constantly need to make a new fire each time , just add like a grass tuft and it should save you for a whole night , if you find any hay-like biomes , they usually have alot of grass and are one of the best places to have a base in , sinse they supply you with alot of things that ou need to survive for quite a long time , they may even sort out your poop problem. Hex
Wow, poop really is a big deal in this game. Okay, my next mission after I slowly die from hunger is to go hunting for the excrements of large beasts in order to survive. Time to Bear Gryll's this game... wait, please tell me there's not an option to- nevermind.Again, thanks for all the constructive comments. Nice advice and tips which aren't spoiling anything but pointing me in the right direction. It's 4:00 AM and I'm really enjoying myself.Feel free to let me know anything else that you think would be relevant to the game. EDIT: What's with that huge ugly bird that keeps running away from me? You can kill Beefalo for meat, if you're not happy with your character being a vegetarian.
Syd
You can kill Beefalo for meat, if you're not happy with your character being a vegetarian.Though I'd recommend not killing beefalo, at least yet, as they still don't respawn and they're a more convenient poop-dispenser than the pigmen are. Hex
I take it that "Beefalo" is the large pig that doesn't accept berries around the Pigmen? I didn't try attacking him or any of them, I figured that they'd all turn on me and try to kill me. I also encountered my first "Tallboy", and he tried sitting on me after I wanted his egg for some reason. Not sure what the purpose is.

TylerTheDragon
I don't think assisting someone by giving away what something is isn't going to make the game exiting , I think that the best way to play this game is to discover what things are and what they are good for. Marak
My best spoiler-free advice is simply this: if in doubt, shift-left click on it. This forces the game to Examine whatever you're pointing at (instead of trying to Interact with it), and your character will almost always point you in the right direction. Example: in your base, examining your grass and berry bushes would reveal messages like "this needs to be fertilized."If in doubt, Examine!
