Indeed, plant loads of pine cones near them and they will go to sleep. Remember to not cut any more trees near them though, they can wake up again.

Run them into a pig village. The pigs will attract their aggro and they won't be pissed at you anymore. Then you'll have 2 giant friends walking about.
