Tricked by insanity...

Recommended Posts

I wonder if it would be possible to somehow "trick" a player into attacking their friends in DST when they are low on sanity... perhaps when you are very low on sanity and a friendly player enters the nearby 2 screen activation area/limit thing it would be possible to make the insane player see them a some sort of shadow creature.

If there where a new shadow creature, with a ranged attack and a somewhat random attack pattern... sometimes this creature would be spawned normally (I.E It is in fact a shadow creature that needs to be killed) but sometimes it would be spawned attached to a friendly player.

In the second case, the friendly player would not be visible to the insane player, the shadow creature would attempt to occupy the same place as the friendly character as often as possible. When The shadow creature gets attacked while on the same spot as the friendly character the friendly character takes the dmg instead.

Or something along those lines... I wonder how difficult it would be to make a shadow creature AI that could convincingly obscure the fact that it is attached to another player or not...

No. It's been mentioned by Seth that only insane people see Nightmares, and you can't manipulate that. You can't even see their Nightmares if you wanted to try unless you were insane yourself. And if asking if we could make some sort of "attack" to do so, that's not something a player would have available i the single player so I'd guess not likely.

Truthseeker: he was saying that insane player might see other players as monsters; the non-insane player wouldn't see or perceive anything except the insane player attacking them for no reason. That actually sounds pretty creepy...

Hmm...hmmm....hmm...I'm too sane to think about this :)

Seriously, it goes in so many different directions both good and bad. There's no quick response to this. I shall ponder upon this before expressing my insights.

I don't think it would look so consistent, like insanity in this game is just a bunch of shadows monsters, gloomier vision and seeing veins, and unless they make the players have the same sprite as monsters/shadow monsters(which just doesn't feel right), it wouldn't affect people that much after the first couple of times hitting another player for no reason.

What may work is if when you're insane and you see a character near you he/she "shoots a boomerang" at you. This tricks you into attacking your teammate as you think he's gone rogue and wants to kill you. However after the first attack you see a little shadow thing evaporate infront of the player who you thought attacked you. Orrr some sort of hallucination that looks like a character in game but attacks you would be cool. Don't Starve Together needs to be the ultimate trust test

Or the other players could start to look and sound like different mobs (or maybe even nearby mobs).  Imagine if you were fighting deerclops and going insane, then you hear a hound bark.  Suddenly a hound charges towards you.  In sheer panic, you kill it... and your buddy's ghost pops out of the body.  Turns out your friend was trying to help with the giant, and you were to busy with deerclops to notice his player-marker.  Imagine if you were half insane and fighting spiders with your buddy (playing Webber, perhaps), and it became increasingly difficult to tell which spider was Webber.

Yeah, probably impossible to implement, but it would be pretty darn cool.
