Wx-78 The over used?

Recommended Posts

WX-78 is at the top of the heap when it comes to the meta right now.

If you start a world off as WX-78 and find gears from killing clockwork, graves, tumbleweed or in caves/ruins you can quickly boost your stats above other default characters.

IF YOU DONT start as WX-78 and finish a world with the intent of playing WX-78 in the next you can farm 15 gears before starting as WX-78 meaning you will begin the game with every item from your last game with 400 Health, 300 Sanity and 200 Hunger right off the bean after chomping down on those gears.

It takes 15 Gears to have the highest stat block of any character in the game with virtually no downsides.

Why wouldnt you play him? With the Tam of Shanter and Night Armor he lit is virtually indestructible even in boss fights. If you want to have fun, play another character, if you want efficiency and ease of use - quite fittingly the robot is the way to go.

I agree though... I want to see other people play every character, you should pick your favorite and play them - not who is the best; even with WX-78's ridiculous stat block. Other characters powers can make up for his massive Face-tanking capabilities. Especially Wendy and Woodies powers in particular.

He's just easy once you have Gears.

Woodie is where it's at.

I've never played as him beyond a quick try out.  For some reason he just doesn't appeal to me.

I played as Wilson for the longest time, then I tried Woodie for a while and liked him too, but the werebeaver music got too much.  When I unlocked Maxwell I used him for a while.  Now I like Wigfrid, but I finally unlocked Wes last week so I'll play as him after I get bored with her.

I was just looking at the character portraits and I think the ones I like playing as are the ones who have actual eyes that look at you (as opposed to Wickerbottom who seems to keep her eyes closed).  I can't think what else it can be.  Wilson looks slightly cross at his situation, Wigfrid is taking on the wilderness with confidence, Wes is kind of a bit helpless and lost, Maxwell - not sure about Maxwell but at least he's looking at the world.  That should mean I'd like Wolfgang, but he's so annoying with his 'I am Mighty'.

When I play as one of the others I just don't care enough whether they live or die.

I guess for streams or lets plays or whatever, using the most safe/easiest characters might seem the most appealing.

You also have a fairly permanent goal, which is too find gears and upgrade further. There's only a limited amount of gears per world anyways. (also robots)

Try finding a person playing Beaverlord, its impossible.

This is where math intervenes:(St)+1337,9322 x 2E=Vi.Let me explain now.Streamers + leetness x Too Easy =Viewers. So,basically, streamers use WX78 because he is easy to play, that meaning they can acomplish most of the survival tasks with minimal effort. That, leading to easily inducing the viewers a false impression that the respective streamer is pro.Thank me later.

Beaverlord is legit one of the best characters though! If you know you can come back after using the curse he gets more work done faster than ANY OTHER CHARACTER IN THE GAME! Making him a character that's basically Wilson if you're only more prepared. That Axe chopping speed is also practically god damn unfair - though he is a Lumberjack after all!

I don't like the idea of watching a streamer because they're good at a game! I watch a stream or video because I like the streamer playing it! If you chose ANY character in Don't Starve, but seemed like you were having fun, had alot of things to say, and genuinely wanted to keep the viewers interest I'd watch. I used to watch Mr. GMVIEW before his unfortunate passing - and I liked the fact he played Wolfgang and several different characters - based on what he WANTED to do. Not what's easy!

i love to play as him and start in spring it makes your effort of upgrading him realy hard and i die most of the time since of his dowsides he gets more balacend this way(bad english sry)

Oooohhh... I haven't played him in Reign of Giants, but even in spring if you can keep yourself well protected from the rain with a pretty parasol/grass hat and get work done going from tree to tree chopping wood it's still not so bad! It'd be even better once you get a real umbrella from hunting pigs!

Also when you get struck by lightning in the rain, you can move the fastest of any character in the game - have a free light, and your temperature can never drop. All for a few points of health damage? If you can manage your wetness level at all?

That's still ridiculous. Now if you set your world with Rain to (Lots) then WX-78 May just get interesting to play. (Thanks for the idea)

Never played and tried WX78 before

My favourite character is Wigfrid

Have just use her to finish the adventure mode

Her adsorbing skills from fallen mobs is more attractive to me

Can only eat meat food is not a cons to me at all.

Wigfrid is my favorite character solely for that reason. Also pig-tails are... attractive, and her voice is awesome.

Wx-78 is easy mode. No arguing that.

Wes is where things get impressive.

Wes is where things get boring.

Playing a game as Wes is fun if you cheat to keep your sanity max then pump an infinite amount of balloons out -

After that I'd really only consider playing Wes once I've beaten the game with ALL The other characters. Since his unique ability is that he has awful stats, his stats drop faster and on top of that his ability drains one of your stats to use. Is it hardcore? Yes. Is raw difficulty always more appealing? No. Interesting mechanics, atleast in my book will always take precedent over difficulty - though Wes still has his place with those balloons.

He'd just be my last pick because of it. Plus I need to unlock him legitimately first...

When I play as one of the others I just don't care enough whether they live or die.

Not caring about human suffering, life or death based on the content of someone's character including appearance. You live up to your name-sake. NO OFFENCE IMPLIED. I just found that funny.

It would be more worrying if they were actually human.  I can't worry about the fate of all animated characters as well as the real world - I'd never get any sleep.

have you forgot webber?

Webber is very powerful, however most people will not have him unlocked if they are new to the game streaming. I found Webber when I reset my stats on my first Wilson playthrough by sheer luck - but I doubt all the streamers would have him. Also why bother playing Webber when WX-78 with gears is even easier!

This must've hit you close to home. ( I would edit my post but the quote wont show up properly from Barbarian, Copy pasting it, hitting the quote button, nothing works.) IF YOU DID Actually care about animated characters. I do.  :wilson_cry:

I do care about animated characters, just....not all of them.  I cried at Toy Story (I think, can't remember actually but let's assume I did).  And Finding Nemo had me biting my nails.  But Willow and Wendy, for example, are clearly demon children.

Maybe I'll empathise more with WX-78 if I have a go at playing him for longer than a couple of minutes.

Speaking as a person who liked Wx-78 the best out of both character personality and abilities, I can easily state you are missing the idea of world hopping, especially when to avoid winter, and to reset limited resources. However, with the RoG upgrade, the dynamics of wetness+damage+durability loss from umbrellas changes the wx dynamic. If new players simply find more gears eaten=easier playthrough video, so be it....

What the scientist wrote.

So I guess I'm weird or just super noob-y for liking Willow?  I don't care about her immune to fire thing, but her lighter is unbelievably fantastic.  Insta-warmth in the winter in emergencies, and insta-forever light at night.  The ability to equip lighter and spend an entire night RUNNING FOR MY LIFE has saved my life more than once.  (If, for instance, I decided to camp for the night in a pig village and wasn't paying attention to the moon cycle, and it just happened to be a full moon that night.) I am admittedly still fairly new to this game though, I'm still getting to know the other characters.

I find if you get in a jam to chop down a few trees and be invulnerable as long as you like a bit more unbalanced, including never freezing in Beaver form and just eating inedible-when-human-often-stockpiled-for-winter-resources to stay that way.

But at least Willow's lighter is always on. The catch is her (alleged) low sanity firestarting is bad for your flammables. Whatever.

this is true. I learned pretty early on to stay far away from my forest and my berry, grass, and twig farms if my sanity's any where near half.  Luckily since pretty fires make her so happy it's not too hard to stay sane.  But yeah, unfreezable night-visioned super beaver is great. I found that it's a very efficient way to uncover as much of the map as possible, since you shouldn't have to worry too much about running into any monsters you're not prepared for.  You just can't collect anything.

It's also....more difficult in caving....like I forgot my cycle and died in a cave after I reverted trying to get back because there is mo moon phase icon there *sigh*

Hmm...lets see.

Wilson can get beard hair like it's nothing.  Between that and the fact that you can get nightmare fuel from the caves, you never having to go insane to get supplies and can have an infinite supply of meat effigies as well as.

Willow has an infinite light source, which completely takes Charlie and any dark-related dangers away from the game.  It also means that you don't have worry about gathering wood for a campfire when night comes and you never have to worry about making torches should you get chased at nighttime.

Wolfgang gets a rather insane damage multiplier and all he has to do is keep his hunger meter up, which isn't hard for anyone that knows what they are doing.  Even his normal form has a damage multiplier.

Woodie...do I even need to go into detail on how overpowered he is?

Then you have WX-78.  The hunger increase means nothing given how easy it is to fill.  The sanity barely increases compared to ther characters and the combo of rain and lightning decreasing it so much means that you have to be careful, plus you can barely use the telelocator or hammer the ancient crafting station.  Spring is annoying as hell with him.  Gears are limited and won't help later on.

In the end, the fact that he has health to tank is his only true bonus.  The sanity and hunger upgrades barely affect how you play with him, and the bonuses from getting struck by lightning just mean that you can run around for one night as you wish.  The fact that people say those that play WX-78 are noobs and that other characters can't be considered overpowered kind of shows you how much time they spent watching people play characters versus actually trying them out themselves.  There is more to this game than just the stats at the top right.

Honestly the gears are super nice and essentially make the late-game easy mode, nobody can deny that, but he does have an extremely rough start in the Spring, and dies easier than most until he gets his gear fix, and even then death comes quickly to those who aren't cautious. 400 health really isn't all that much if you get overwhelmed by heavy hitters. Going toe to toe with the Giants is seldom a good idea unless you're well prepared, and a trip down to the Ruins at max Nightmare Cycle doesn't get any less intimidating even if you're maxed out.

With 100 base in every stat though, WX really doesn't have much of the capacity of any other character early game, his most major boons are very situational with his overcharge only occurring if you get struck during the weather condition that constantly damages you, and the strike itself takes a heaping chunk out of your sanity to boot, not to mention the overcharge is negated if you're trying to protect yourself from the water damage. He's not at all without his disadvantages is all I'm saying.

EDIT: Didn't consider this but yes, Telelocator activation and Ancient Pseudoscience Station will also overcharge you, but you still suffer the sanity consequences. I can speak from experience when a Damaged Clockwork Rook broke two or three Ancient Pseudoscience Stations in a row and sent my sanity from full down to 0 in half a second. Also those structures are much more valuable for their intended purposes rather than to incite overcharge anyways, so there's that as well.

While gears have gotten easier to gather with tumbleweeds, they're still found in very limited quantities through that method, and finding them very early on in the game pretty much falls on either chasing after a lot of tumbleweed, digging a lot of graves and hoping you find a very rare gear drop before your sanity hits rock bottom, or coming across Clockworks, and some worlds don't even have many clockworks aside from those guaranteed to spawn at the Wooden Thing.

Lastly, the ability to eat spoiled food without penalty is really quite nice, but I usually get to all my food before it spoils, so it's a very minor advantage, though it has helped me in the past.

While he has some of the best boons of any character, he's kind of at the mercy of the world to obtain those benefits. Overcharge is a treat when it happens because you have to get poured on and take water damage in hopes that you even get struck, gears are a godsend at first because you begin very weak, then become a little too over the top later on when you've capped out at 400HP and such. I really wouldn't mind if they nerfed WX hard, like seriously down to 200 max HP after 10-15 gears just because I'd at least feel a little more fair playing him. Gears are amazing as all-in-one restorative items, and I'd like them to remain that way, but putting you up as far as 400 health really does feel overboard, as I'm sure has been stated over and over again here on the forums. I'm not waiting on it to change, (unless it gets rebalanced for Multiplayer and get carried over to Single Player) but if it did I wouldn't complain one bit.

That said, I don't want to feel bad playing him on gameplay merits because honestly he's my favorite character. Not the only guy I ever play, I love Woodie just as much and am just as happy to play other characters like Wendy or Wolfgang when I stream/record videos, but WX and his silly, all-caps dialogue and crazy processed synth voice, and just his overall appearance are humorous to me. When he comments that sleeping beefalo are "BEGGING TO BE TIPPED" it makes me smile because he's so deviously evil yet so hilariously petty in his mean-spirited attitude. Put that next to the fact that I'm a sucker for hanging around the adorable companions of the game, and when I play WX I can't help but think somewhere deep down he secretly has a backup empathy module in that copper chassis of his.

I mean, does anybody else just appreciate WX-78 as a character, meta aside? I can agree, I don't want to see everybody playing one character, especially if it's only because that character is easy to play, but is it wrong to enjoy playing a character because you genuinely enjoy them? I should think not.
