I was reading a post about christmas and I was wondering what if we had holidays.  Like christmas, halloween, thanksgiving, easter, etc.  Like for example Halloween had certain creatures, all pigs turned into werepigs(or whatever they are called) THE PELONTRIX, and maybe monsters that don't normally come out. (A freakin heard of Vargs)  Thanksgiving could be where more turkeys come out, and they could have more turkey legs, and certain foods popped up more often. Easter could just be the bunnymen surfacing to just leave eggs that you could eat.

But holidays are an abstract concept, why would a concept govern the behavior of animals? (Especially holidays not everyone celebrates!)

Well first of all, Maxwell controls the world with the power of them.  He could have just have been like "what the heck."  Christmas, and easter are just popular holidays.  They are both actually pagan.  I am not sure about halloween though.  It could just be a setting in multiplayer.  Just another fun way to survive.

Grinding the gears here for you contrived this:

From a spring start -

Day 10 - Easternox: Rabbits emerge from the sinkholes carrying baskets... what's in the baskets you ask, Brad Pitt? Why Rabbit eggs of course. Or if you're not feeling the reason for the season wouldn't it be nice to have a little tote basket to carry around?

Day 28 - Sundependence day: Pigs are chillin, pigs are grillin. What're they grillin? Probably pigs. Give them a floral wreath, maybe they'll trade you for a glass of cool lemonade to chill you out in that crazy heat. Or maybe you can get in on those grills and try the pigs recipe for summer steak.

Day 44 - Hollowallow eve: The full moon is out, quite a bit today. But don't worry about those pigs. They're all sleeping off the candy. Which they conveniently left a basket in front of their houses for hungry trick-o-treaters. Just don't take more than one... That could get ugly. One delicious lollipop per house is a great way to keep sane in this desolate world. Or if you don't prefer sweets it's rumored catcoons simply cant get enough of them.

Day 62 - Frostcone day: Even though it's freezing those festive lights someone hung on those evergreens sure looks nice. Maybe if you're good this year Krampus won't be giving you a hard time and his brother Murskap the Giver will leave you something for your commitment to altruism. Just leave his trees alone... he's doing this for you.

Thinking also along the lines of some Thanksgiving one where the turkeys take up arms, emerging from the bushes in Pilgrim hats wielding muskets and in a vengeful mood. Loot drops say, a pilgrim hat that makes Turkeys not run from you and provides (or drains) sanity. Maybe you kill a bunch and they call on a boss turkey giant that drops components that can forge you your own musket that is fueled by *gasp* gunpowder!

My only concern is that holidays become to culture-specific and might do something inadvertent like hurt Asian sales. Or even Canadian ones.

I like the idea of Don't Starve holidays events if they aren't based too closely real ones.

For example, Krampusnacht in the winter! http://forums.kleientertainment.com/files/file/299-krampusnacht/

A mid summer festival held by the pigs could be cool. For Reign of Giants there could be a spring festival held by the Merms, and here are a few Halloween themed mods already out that were quite clever.

Religious holidays? No

Made Up fake Don't Starve holidays? No

If you want holidays, ask for a modder.

Excuse me, but I feel like this would be a great idea for Don't starve.  If I wanted it to be modded I would have made it myself.  I'm just making suggestions, and seeing what people think.  So far people want non-religious holidays. Krampus in some beliefs is santas brother. Connected to christmas.  Christmas is based in religion, but is not taken that way today.  I don't think Wilson is going to thank god for a boomerang.  I can tell you are being a mean with this comment.  I suggest you either not be negative, or not reply.  By stop being negative, I mean give some critic, or just vote the poll.  If you do not like this idea, give your input, but don't be a little crap about it.

Like this?

I say it should be 2 warnings before perma banned. First warning should ban the player/serial number for a week, second warning should ban for a month then perma ban for good(need to buy new game).

It's interesting but only if it is Fresh!I mean, we already know all of these holydays etc but if it's new, we can bypass frontiers again and make everyone happy!

Exemple: One year(~74 days) after you have begin the world, there is the black moon, every lights will not work and the only source of light is the night light! If you get hurt by the shadow monster, you will be insta-kill...

Sorry, if i offended you, man. I just meant this was the stupidest idea i've ever seen on this forum. That's all.

Why? Just saying no isn't going to slide anymore. Show your work, defend your ground.

Go away. You have no business here if you're going to blatantly offend people. I opened this account like a week ago and I've never seen a forum more full of self-righteous trolls telling other people what to think.

I've never been one for in-game holiday things; it just feels so out of place in many games.

However, provided it kept to the Don't Starve theme and the whole "HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!" was not so blatantly obvious as it is in other games (e.g. Runescape *shudders* - SANTA HATS! WOOOOOOO! Pls no), then it could work.

It just isn't my cuppa tea, I'm afraid.

Also, I think the poll's a bit unfair - I felt bad about declining because of the after-statement :(

Without wanting to make this too long, let's all be nice. If you've nothing nice to say, don't say it at all - constructive criticism is key. ^^

Make this long! We can read more!!!

Btw, i talked about special events like dark moon... but i can make better things...:

Each time there is full moon, there is a chance that it makes solar eclipse, that spawn lots of tentacle and wither all plants(but no wild fires)

During summer, it's the piggies holydays! They are gone for the all season.

During winter, there is one day that have no day ...during this day(night),  you have the permanent buff of nightmare amulet.

But i see that's not really good... :/

I like the idea of tentacles - full moon needs some kind of proper risk that isn't werepigs; other than that, it's just a way of farming nightmare fuel with an infinite durability torch. Perhaps they couldn't breach man-placed turfs (e.g. carpeted and wooden flooring)?

Apart from that, I just don't see it. Perhaps as a mod, but I just couldn't see it in the vanilla game.

The nightmare amulet buff intrigues me - alas, I reckon it's place would be in the realm of modding - it'd make the game more interesting for experienced players, but it's just too hard and unfair to be thrusted upon the community. :/

Hey, don't put yourself down like that. I really liked the tentacle suggestion. ^^
