For me it has to be Autumn.

Same for me.

Spring is full of always angry bees and there aren't rabbits for easy food. You can hardly gather stuff and get ready for summer (ice, etc) whereas in Autumn you can get warm clothes easely (hunting koalefant and shaving beefaloes).

I usually start in Spring. The main reason, for me, is that the days get longer, and I like the weird difficulty curve you get from it, with two hard seasons eventually culminating in the Dragonfly fight, followed by a relaxing autumn and a winter that I can just sleep through. The lack of rabbits during spring isn't a problem for me, I mainly eat butterflies and berries until I can move on to honey, pies, and meat. Deerclops also seems like a better final boss than the Dragonfly, even though I guess the Dragonfly is technically harder.

The only real problem that I have with spring starts is that I can't get a Tam and Cane until 3 seasons have passed.

I like to play winter as the starting season. It is a bit challenging but with enough focus, determination, and luck, by mid-winter at the latest you can have all the gear and food needed to survive, unlike Summer where there is no ice and the thermal stone is as likely to freeze you to death as help you. The muted sounds, relaxing snowfall, and boppy music are fun too.

Autumn. It gives plenty of preparation time for the winter.

The winter gives plenty of preparation time for the summer.

The spring gives plenty of extra preparation time for all other seasons.

Summer is the embodiment of ****. He gives nothing. Jerk.

Autumn makes the most sense from every viewable direction. It has none of the negatives the others do. Furthermore, Winter after Autumn gives you the chance to stack large amounts of ice for Summer, where as starting Spring into Summer is a lot more difficult.

Another Note: Can't get Tier 3 Crafting if the Rabbits are stuck below ground in Spring, making Autumn>Winter even more ideal.

Autumn if I want a relaxing start.

Spring if I want a challenging first summer

Winter if I want a difficult start but then smooth sailing

Summer if I only want to survive a week

More often than not, I like Autumn because I'm a wimp

Well, it's possible by digging up the rabbit holes, though not ideal.

Summer is impossible to start with

On the contrary, it is very possible to start with summer. You can either start with default plus, or get a very lucky spawn. Me and a few other people have done it before. I did it without default plus and with Wendy.

As for the question, my favorite starting season is Winter. It gives me a challenge to start off with and is not luck based as starting in summer is. And plus, winter is just the best season, no bugs =)

I like Autumn. Its sort of like the default Don't Starve before the different seasons and gives me plenty of preparation time for winter, spring, and summer.

Also, if I'm lucky, I might get a Bearger to spawn near the end of Autumn and lead him into the swamps where I can lead him into swarms of tentacles and Merms whose houses he smashes down, giving me a good supply of tentacle spikes, fish, frog legs, monster meat, and the Hibearnation vest which warms me up and it useful for the long nights of winter as it reduces the rate at which you lose hunger.

Summer gives you the Dragonfly, which if you are lucky enough to kill gives you a scalemail that makes you fireproof

and allows you to drink the tears of Willow players for sustenance

:)

I prefer starting in spring, as the rain makes crops grow a lot faster, which means that I can stock up ALOT of food early on.

Spring is more of a early base / crop farm start, while autumn is better for exploring, and hunting (specially for the Koalefant)

I like Autumn, because then you have nothing at the beginning, so this is the best. But my favourite season is actually Spring. Admit it, people Spring is the best, most adventurous and awesome season, may be not to start with, but just on its own.

Bearger gives hibernation vest which helps with winter.

Deerclops gives Eyebrella which helps with spring.

Moose gives Down Thermantidote which helps with summer.

Dragonfly gives Scalemail which helps with... Summer? Makes no sense.

Well, the boss drops are made to help you with the season ahead, and if you need help with Autumn after surviving winter and summer you should probably see a doctor. The Scalemail is just a plan ol' neat armor piece. It's way more useful then the Down Thermantidote which is equivelant in value to half of a more easily obtained Ice Cube hat.
