You sir, need to pay a visit to our dear old friend, Mac Tusk. He drops the Tam O' Shanter which is an amazingly effective sanity booster. You can find him in his igloo that spawns on the "walrus camp" carpet looking thing during the winter. Baring that, the dapper vest and silk hat are both rather helpful. (craft-able in the clothing tab at an alchemy engine)

There are a number of routes to go for food, this is my favorite thus far: Get four bee boxes as early as possible (with at least 20 flower around them) and continuously harvest them 'till day 19. You should have at least 2 full stacks of honey harvested by then with another 24 waiting in the boxes for you to grab when necessary. You can basically live off the honey alone, but I'm not done there.

To further increase the usefulness of your food you can combine meat with honey in a crock pot to make honey nuggets or honey ham. (one meat (two morsels) for nuggets, two meat for ham. I like to use berries as a filler so I'm only using one honey on each cook) My main source of meat is hunting koalaphants. My two secondary sources are spider dens (you can use ONE monster meat in the honey ham recipe) and pig houses (feed them a piece of monster meat or a morsel and make them fight each-other for bonus points) which can be harvested every three days. These meals also have the added bonus of increasing sanity when eaten.

As for dealing with monsters, you have to choose your tactics based on what you are comfortable with. If you can kite: log suit, spear or tentical spike, and god speed. If kiting isn't your thing: marble suit, football helmet, and stand there holding "F" tanking the damage. It's also very useful to play the local fauna against each-other. Either hire some pigs to help you while roaming around, or try to lead the enemy into another group of creatures to entice a fight between them. All else fails, run! (and make sure you take off your marble suit before you try to run xD)

Any other questions?

Ice see what you did there.

Wait... I did something? *completely and honestly confused*

*edit*

My second thought is that you are referring to the fact that I said "don't stare" to a person that has had problems with gathering food. The phrase "don't starve" is used by me whenever I am wishing someone to have a good time playing. That's all.

*edit 2*

screw it all... I'm still confused. I'll just put this one down as Xjurwi's "sketchy" behavior and be done with this. xD

sorry for not being clear, i mostly die from monsters and food, because food doesnt grow in winter.

so is there any good way to keep sanity up without the flower hat?

YOUR INVENTORY IS FULL OF POOP.

Oh wait, I guess that's just how the backpack slots show up on console...

Yes, just in case, you can't eat poop.

Seriously now, the trick to surviving winter is remembering to have food stockpiled that will last throughout winter, have methods of regaining sanity throughout winter, and know how to fight/heal in winter.

Farms are great until winter, then they stop growing. One of the tricks you can do is plant seeds just before winter, and have a bunch of extra manure then use them to fertilize the planted crops to "fast grow" the seeds. Then do not harvest them and keep them stored as emergency food. Food not collected or not "harvested" in farms and crock pots do not spoil.

Secondly, if you haven't built one before-as Ortorin has said-build a crock pot. several bee boxes and drying racks. Not only does it make food that restores more hunger (sanity with the drying racks, and with the crock pot, several foods heal even higher health and sanity,) honey can be used with refined reeds (papyrus) to make honey poultices if you find you need extra healing in your combats.

Thirdly, consider building a bird cage and bird trap (and place the bird in the cage.) Not only can you feed it spoiling meats (or any meats/cooked monster meat no matter what its durability) which convert to eggs to save food, (also, eggs can be used to cook Bacon and Eggs which ls a food that lasts a very long time without an ice box. Oh, and if you find gears, build an ice box BTW,)  you should feed your harvested crops to the bird to get specialty seeds so you can selectively control what crops will grow in your farms. So if sanity is an issue, you could grow pumpkins to make pumpkin cookies. Or if health is a problem,  grow dragonfruiits to make dragonfruit pies. Sometimes the bird only gives regular seeds though so several fruits kept aside to feed it may be needed for the first time you generate seeds. And remember, have all this ready before winter starts (1st one is always day 21.)

Fourthly, ALWAYS have armor available (Log Suit, Football helmet and/or marble suit.) Better armoring is available, but that may take a while and/or require a Shadow manipulator/journeying to the Ruins levels of the caves. For now, just always be ready to switch to your armor and weapon whenever you are near enemies. Sanity draining bosses though may require you to get reeds for missile  darts or make a presdihatitator for things like ice staves, or craft a boomerang as a basic Alchemy Engine missile weapon (but hold down the action button so it doesn't hurt you when returning.) Look what you can make under Fight or Magic and learn the options for yourself.

Finally, besides the sanity tips given you from previous replies, collect cook and eat green mushrooms. Of course, sleeping in straw rolls and tents work too, but you need additional food consumed for the const in hunger every time you use one of those.

It's been a couple months since I played, so I don't know if this is still valid, but it helped me up my sanity game a lot when I was starting out, and I didn't see anyone else mention it: pigmen.  Hanging out with them raises your sanity, and the more pigmen the faster.  So pay them in monster meat, to chop wood for a whole day (otherwise they stay too far from you to raise your sanity - you have to be close).  Stay right by them.  Even at night when they're asleep they'll help (maybe? I recall maybe seeing something in an update that nerfed that a bit?)  Way better than garlands and tophats.  I stopped using tents entirely after I learned the pigman sanity maintenance tactic.  Tam is best, but sometimes you get unlucky on the drops and don't get it the first winter (or the second, as happened to me once).

Some nudges after looking at your screenshot...

You don't have a heatstone to keep you warm in Winter.  you definitely need one.

You also don't have any Winter clothing at all.  Look into it.

You say monsters are killing you.  You don't have any armor.  Try to protect your body AND your noggin when fighting.

Fix those three things and you'll be well on your way.

sorry for not being clear, i mostly die from monsters and food, because food doesnt grow in winter.

so is there any good way to keep sanity up without the flower hat?

I would high advise some drying racks. Also some traps on rabbit holes for the morals for the drying racks.

Dried morals restore hunger, sanity and health. So like 6 racks can bring you back from the brink of any bad situation.

A crook pot really helps too.

Gonna put my own two cents in,

I'd like to offer a explanation for each way to die in winter, and how to combat it, let's see how far i get before i pass out on the couch!

Freezing - Honestly, the best way to deal with this is to get yourself a beefalo hat, it provides a tier better then the warmth of a tam-o-shanter and should keep you warm enough until you need to go back to your base, if you're having trouble getting the horn for it you can make a winter hat with some beefalo hair and some silk, if you're looking for a way to get the horn easily, just lure it to a frog mafia or swamp or something and loot the horn afterwards

Starving - This one is pretty hard, and I haven't found a good way to counter it myself, getting food mid-winter is pretty difficult, which is why you need to stock up before winter, i recommend going to the swamp and gathering some reeds and making a bird cage, feeding it things like morsels and frog legs to get eggs, and make bacon eggs which last around 20 days before they're completely spoiled, 40 if they're in a icebox, if you're looking for food mid-winter lure the deerclops (if he comes) into another herd of beefalo or frog mafia or pengull swarm or something and collect his meat and dry it for the rest of the winter

Fighting - This one's rather simple, try NOT to battle during winter, your chances of killing something in winter without either freezing first, or dieng first are pretty low, the only time in which you should be fighting things in winter is deerclops (as a last resort) and mactusk, since he only appears during winter, but judging by the OP, you probably wont be targeting him

Alright, let me know if i missed anything, im gonna go pass out on the couch now. bye
