Syd
If you play as Wilson, a full beard and a warmed-up heatstone in your inventory is usually sufficient to keep you warm throughout the day, so a warm hat or coat isn't absolutely necessary. My favorite winter food source is koalafants. It wouldn't hurt to occasionally try hunting one down (all you need to do is follow their footprints). They're shy, so you may need a ranged weapon to engage it unless you can chase it over to tentacles or something else that will fight it for you, but fighting a koalafant is pretty much just like fighting a beefalo, so if you know how to kill beefalo, you're already prepared for koalafants. I occasionally kill beefalo for food as well, though I have to be in a pretty bad situation food-wise to consider killing them since they're so useful alive, and I'm very careful to make sure that I don't kill off an entire herd. I also supplement my food stocks with rabbits. I just sat the traps right outside of their holes so they hop right into them without any need for baiting. Cooking your food in a crock pot will help both your hunger and your sanity, so I highly recommend it. Drying racks are quite nice as well. Rosten
I thought the beefalo hat was tier 3, while the shanter was tier 2 insulation.Last time i checked they were on par with each other, ill go check real quick though Edit - looks like your right, must've changed it since last time i played, either that or my information was completely wrong in the first place Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/29721-dont-starve-in-winter/page/2/#findComment-372222 Share on other sites
papermoon
the easiest way to survive is setting a base near 8+ rabbit holes, build 3+ crockpots and drying racks, collect as many grass & twigs as you can so you can keep making traps during winter and logs to burn during winter -log is easy since you can just plant trees around your base.make 2 or 3 chests to store your extra rabbits, grass and twigs.dont fight at all, lure any incoming hounds to other animals & let those animals deal with hounds.always stay near fire or leave only to collect those rabbits for your daily meatballs and rabbit earmuff.if you low on sanity, then just make straw roll and sleep -tent is better but not really a must.and that's it really. papermoon
^^yes if you know what you're doing.but for a new player who is still strungling getting through his 1st winter i'd suggest getting those items at 2nd winter.heck, i died 15 times before i survived my 1st winter back then not because out of food but because i tried to rambo out and attack most things i saw on screen without a proper kiting knowledge or just didn't have spare meat for the pigs to guard me. -.-the reason why i'd suggest starting to fight things after the 1st winter is hopefully one already learned how to kite around and get out of bad situation or had enough food and resources to back them up.also it's possible for a new player not finding the walrus camp by the 1st winter for whatever reason.don't get me wrong thou', those items are among the best in the game and definitely a must have but if you just want to survive 1st winter then they're not a must. Those early days of failure should be spent practicing kiting and such, since if you become too established after the first winter and you die because of incompetent fighting abilities it'll be a huge waste of time. Once you learn the universal principles of combat you're basically free to roam and kill/harvest everything, which is a relatively easy skill to learn and thus should be among everyone's top priorities. I made the same mistake in my early days by living a very sheltered life among rabbits, making kebabs. This was before the nerf involving Krampus' spawn rate, and guess what? He kicked my teeth in. I was even afraid to attack Beefalo or Koalefants, which are essentially free slabs of meat on feet. Nowadays it's pretty much an assumption of mine that nothing is a "true" threat, even as Wes with 75% damage and 113 health. papermoon
there are meat ef, life amulet and touchstones for dying.i didn't read any guide back then so i didn't know about them, oh wait.. actually it's more like i didnt bother to make or find one. -.-the reason why i suggest fighting later than early is to prevent dying too early, keep dying before knowing how to establish a self sustained base can be frustating especially for some new players.once you have enough resources to back you up, it's much harder for you to die thus it's much safer to start fighting because hopefully those resources can help keeping you alive despite your lack of fighting experience.me? i don't mind dying alot but some people do.beside dying whether even before one set up a base or after are never a waste of time for new player because he gets exp to unlock characters.well some peole like to start with the hard part of the game and the rest prefer to take their time and start from the simple and easy one, there's no right or wrong on that matter because it depends on each one's play style. the truthseeker
BACON AND EGGS MOTHERFUDGER. pls. If you don't find a swamp in time, it's a lot more difficult getting reliable eggs from pengulls. If you don't find a swamp by day 7 at the latest on normal settings, I think there's a bigger issue.
