Sirandar
This game illustrates very vividly that the nature of a man can be determined by a few tweaks of the environment. Does it better that a load of philosophy books and discussions. Trying to play a non-aggressive vegetarian is a little challenging on default, not so much for food but surviving the winter. In the first game where I made it to winter, failing to find or making clothing to keep warm killed me, as there were no materials to make clothes that didn't involve killing that I could find in my safe radius. There must be some other way as a gatherer can't hang out by the fire. Anyone survive a default winter being a non-aggressive vegetarian? It was fun beating the hounds without hitting them once but if they attack at night.... I guess it may come down to robbing graves and hoping to find something warm. Mods don't seem to work well with this game as it crashed with just a few of them.
23rd
Do you consider shaving Beefalo to be a form of violence? I'd imagine you wouldn't. With some wool and silk you can make a Winter Hat easily enough, and with hounds teeth and silk the Dapper Vest will give you a small amount of insulation. Of course this brings up the issue of acquiring silk, and since you don't even want to fight the hostile mobs you'd need to find a way to destroy Spider Nests without rousing the wrath of its inhabitants; hanging around swamps where colonies of spiders are bound to get in fight with tentacles is another great way to acquire silk and spider glands. the truthseeker
Can a vegetarian still slaughter a Koalefant for the trunk if he doesn't eat the meat? Yes, but not a Vegan. They don't use any animal products.
23rd
Yes, but not a Vegan. They don't use any animal products. I wonder if a Vegan would use manure.. "We can't use their poop to fertilize our crops! It's something animals produce! How would you feel if someone stole all of your poop?!"

Not saying it is practical, just ethical to nature.
Cynical Cynicist
A microscopic piece of skin from a monkey hanging above me on the vines fell onto my freshly collected berry! I wouldn't dare commit such a monstrous act of savagery! I'll just feed it to another monkey, because it's OK if animals ravage each other. But humans are divine in nature, above such animals! It is our inherited responsibility to avoid and maintain a condescending attitude towards a different formation of atoms!
Sirandar
Whether the devs intended or not this a very educational game. It would make it more interesting and more educational if the player could roleplay a vegetarian and still be successful at the game. Since Maxwell gets his magic Science Machine, it would be nice if vegetarian characters would get a similar perk. The science machine is basically magic in this game anyway so why not give vegetarian players their own magic and challenges. One such challenge might be preventing bunnies from eating the crops. Sirandar
Reading about players trying to play as a vegan in-game and survive, priceless. Why not truthseeker? .... do you really think that Maxwell can take a rock, gold nugget and a log of wood and make a Science Machine in 20 seconds. Ever try taking a piece of flint and a log and making a pickaxe that can take down a 6 foot boulder and refine the gold in 10 whacks? The game is both imaginary and supernatural ....... anything the dev wants can happen ..... that's the beauty of such games. Maxwell has science magic ..... give those that want to roleplay vegetarian characters their magic too.
Sirandar
Here is an idea of how to make Don't Starve even more interesting ...... The game starts as normal with Maxwell and the "Demon" and the game proceeds but with more options and vegetarian lifestyle possible. Eventually you die from one thing or another ...... Then you find out that the Demon is actually a God and how you lived in "Dont Starve" determines the nature and ground rules of the next world you go to. If you just sit there just die .... you go to a world with beings of energy that are free from the tyranny of maintaining a constant energy stream. If you attempt a vegetarian lifestyle then you go to a vegetarian world. If you kill only in self defense, that's the type of world you go to... If you kill anything to eat, then you go to a "Survival of the Fittest" world If you murder wantonly that's the world you go to ... It would be fascinating to play out all these different second worlds with all the challenges and rewards they would have. If you did it well it might be a very well selling game ...... 23rd
The only perk I could think of for a vegetarian themed character would be the ability to build greenhouses so they could continue growing crops through the winter. Building off that, making a compost heap in addition to farms. Food placed in it spoils twice as quickly so that meat can be made into rot for fertilization. If a player doesn't rely on pigs or has no Pig King in their world the meat would be useless otherwise. Perhaps a way to make rot a better fertilizer in addition to this idea, although I'm not sure how that would work.
Sirandar
Besides philosophizing, which I obviously like to do, there is a reason why I bothered posting and enduring scorn. "Don't Starve" is great, but it will probably get old fairly quickly due to the strict limitations of the core mechanic. You can make a boatload on new characters with little tweaks but IMO that just isn't enough to propel this game to the viewership it deserves. The following scenario: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>"Then you find out that the Demon is actually a God and how you lived in "Don't Starve" determines the nature and ground rules of the next world you go to. Addition: Perhaps the ending of the game would be when Maxwell manages to die of old age, and you could make that as challenging as you like. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This would allow you to make a whole bunch of new worlds with radically different ground rules for Maxwell to "Don't Starve" in. Each world could have its own set of weird challenges that the player needs to figure out. Too bad you can't collaborate with the Antichamber dev and send him there too. Your creativity and level design are awesome and I think you have a shot at even bigger things .... set your imagination free ..... that is what good gaming is about. P.S. Ortorin probably won't like it I am done now ........ think about it
