Predictions For The Next Update?

bet you a million $ that the next update will make the game a different version to what it is now.

 

and i bet you another hundred $ that there will be flying toads breathing ice at you.

I'd gladly make that bet, but I somehow imagine you wouldn't be able to pay me either.

I'm not sure if the game is 100% controller-playable yet, but it's close. I need y'alls feedback over this and the next update, so that I can tune the experience for the console version. As a happy side effect, the PC version gets spiffy controller stuff!

 

The general default button layout is this:

 

LT - open crafting (hold for multi-build)

RT - open inventory for shuffling (pauses sim)

RB/LB - rotate camera

Lstick - walk around, navigate menus

Rstick - move the inventory cursor

Dpad - context-sensitive inventory actions

X - attack

A, B - do (context sensitive, similar to LMB/RMB)

Y - inspect

 

As you walk around, the game tracks a "current interaction target", which is kind of like your mouse hover target. The target highlights and you get little button popups that show you what A,B, and Y would do if you were to press them. As you play, you can select inventory objects with the rstick. You get a contenxt-menu over the current object that maps inventory actions (insepct, drop, use on self, use on interaction object) to the dpad. If you want to move things around, you can switch into inventory mode (which pauses the game). Backpacks show up under your main inventory, because it was really inconvenient to cursor over to them on the side.

 

I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays when you get it later today.

It's a smaller update, content-wise. There's a cool new monster, some updated items, and a lot of fixes for things. Death is real death in caves now, which are no longer a "work in progress".

 

I've done some optimizations for PS4 that may or may not make things run faster on low-end PCs. Our physics system was somewhat misconfigured, which was making for slow forests on some machines.

what about cave regen?

It is no longer. It was just a testing thing.

Ah, no longer will it be possible to renew caves over and over for regenerating otherwise more rare resources. And finally perma-death too, yay! I do wonder what the worm looks like, and where it will do it's wormy stuff...

I'm not sure the general DS-playing public is ready for the awesomeness of the Krampusnacht mod. :)

It is no longer. It was just a testing thing.

 

 

As I expected. RIP regen. I hope a few rare cave items do become renewable with options (like gold was with the Pig King) but if not, that's why they are called non-renewable. However, (if i wasn't flat broke,) it would be a good reason for me to buy a XBOX controller :) 

I love how Kevin just shows up and spills the beans on everything. X) Perma-death in caves is all I can ask for, and then there's a new mob and controller support on top of it! ...What are we going to do when Don't Starve isn't getting patched anymore? Kevin, Bryce, and Alia, are you guys gonna work on Incognita? I don't want to miss out on the fun times. ;-;
