We're wrapping up the Caves II update, and it's getting to that time where we have to figure out what comes next. I'm going to be writing a new roadmap soon, which is going to make this task easier, but for this update we have to make it up on the spot.

So far, here's what I'm thinking:

[*]The long awaited character rebalance (begin the OP/UP debate now!)

[*]A new character (hint - the name starts with a W!)

    [*]doors (if they work...)

    [*]Pengulls (we didn't forget!)

There should probably be some more cave stuff in there as well. We're not *quite* ready to go down to lava world yet (need to pre-make some assets), but we might make a second, darker, harder level. A lot of the difference will come from the level generation, but we could put a new monster down there as well.

Anyway, just wanted to keep y'all in the loop. Look for the new roadmap coming soon. It will help frame the discussion surrounding new updates for the next couple of months.

Hope the doors work, and I'm looking forward to the Pengulls. As far as the characters go, I think most would agree that Wolfgang is pretty OP compared to the others. He's currently the only character I use and I don't really feel too compelled to play as any of the others when I am looking at the long term within any given game.

Well one things for sure Wolfy needs a nerf :)

Well one things for sure Wolfy needs a nerf :)

The hole point of Wolfgang is that he's 'easy mode' like Wes is 'hard' mode. Wolfgang is meant to make playing the game easier with his more health and harder hits, so he should be left as he is like Wes should be. The only character that needs to be buffed big time is Wickerbottom. Her buff isn't good enough compared to other characters

Willow could use a slight buff. You can have her perk with a twig and grass and fire damage is a joke. Soo. yeah, that's not really THAT good.My suggestion: When in complete darkness, if she doesn't hold an item, she holds a match which has a rather little radius, just so she can see what she runs into. The sanity drop should be equal to the one when you are in the light of a campfire. So, no sanity drop from darkness. And then maybe she could restore sanity a little bit by standing in the damage radius of a fire?Additionally, she can light stuff on fire by right clicking without an item equipped.EDIT: Just so you understand it better: look at the other characters. Their perks would all require rather rare resources to get. Wilson has his beard, you would need winter clothing to get that and those need either beefalo or koalaphants.Willow has a completely unique ghost.'Gang has a unique buff, can't get that either.Wx kinda doubles the duration in which items are edible for 100% of their value. Not even a fridge can do that for you. With Wickerbottom you never need that one purple gem and nightmare fuel for the shadow manipulator, and you can have important items with just a science machine.Wes is hard mode.

And the secret character eliminates the problem of sanity almost completely.
EDIT 2: Okay now let's look at the positive things of Willow. In case you never have twigs and grass on you, which you most likely always have, her perk could safe your life, but you lose huge ammounts of sanity in the process. Can't really say her fire immunity is worth it, i never had a problem with fire, but in case you ever want to run through a burning forest, she's your girl. Edited by Palpetinus

Other ideas for character balancing: Wendy: Wendy should be able to command Abigail like she can other followers, telling her to attack certain creatures. But this would be very op so maybe she should only appear every few days or maybe when she digs up a grave instead of a random ghost it could be Abigail and last for a day or two. Wickerbottom: Like I've said in this thread Wickerbottom needs a better buff because there's no point in playing her right now. (I still haven't played as her).Willow: Since shes a pyromaniac her being immune to fire makes since but her being able to infinitely make fires out of nothing is to OP. There should be a cool down on that ability or she has to have a flammable item to turn into a fire (Like a twig or grass). She should have to put more effort into making fires in winter like having to use 5 twigs or grass to make a fire. the other characters I believe are pretty balanced and only need fine tuning, theses are the characters that really need the changes.

Yay ! A new character ?

I personally believe that the new character is either Wilton or Wilbur.Seeing as the skeletons pop-out of the tentacle pillars and that they are adding cave monkeys. Also: Wolfgang=OP Wendy=UP Willow=UP Wilson= balanced Wickerbottom=OP Wx-78=UP Wes=Wes

Maxwell=OP

Have to partially agree. Ws is not TOO op, he just needs a slight buff, unlike Wendy and Willow.

You've seen the new character, but you haven't seen the... twist. And you'll never guess it. :)

So it is either Wilbur or Wilton since they're the only unimplemented characters we have seen (Wilbur since we saw a monkey man and Wilton because their are skeletons everywhere) hmmmmm but what's the twist?

Doors:

-this can work on many different ways, they can slide to side instead of standard open animation, they can collapse into the ground, they can be like bascule bridge, they can rise up and so on

Characters:

-just give some special abilities to them, I only like Wilson and Wx-78 for some reason

Now to start the list of things you can consider

1. Spider dens mechanic rework, so they wont be empty at dusk/night

2.Ice Hound changes, give some special ability to them (freezing, slowing the player) and make tooth drop chance based instead 100%

3.Spawn Walrus in different places every winter, you can spawn 2xmore camps on world creation and choose some random camps to activate and left the rest inactive, this can even change during winter to simulate that Walruses are traveling in search of their pray

4.Monster plants on farm plots or birds eating your crops and Scarecrow, or locusts

5.Tooth trap nerf, if you put traps to close to each other one that activates will trigger the rest of them, boss monsters will dmg the traps more, and take a little less dmg form them

6.Hurricanes that can carry items, dmg structures, take berry bushes, trees and what not from the ground and throw them at random locations, flying items could dmg the player on impact like with earthquakes underground, fire would die pretty fast during hurricane and you can hide all behind your walls

7.Hail, blizzards with ice shard falling form the sky during winter that can freeze players to death very fast, again you can hide behind your walls to protect yourself a little

9.Health and mind conditions, like character can catch a cold, get ill and weakened until he makes and take medicine and/or sleep, higher chance to catch a cold during rain and winter without using clothes like summer and winter vests to make those items more useful, some disease from eating spoiled food and so on, for mid states make depression like if character eats the same thing over and over he will get depressed or angry or whatever, during different mind states sanity will drain slower or faster and recovery will be also slower or faster, sleep and/or eating some different good food can change your mind state, sweets will make you happy and so on

10.More magic items

11.Status effects with dmg over time like poisoned and so on, spider attacks can poison you.

That's all for now.

It's William carter!

No? Just me? My dad?

What if it is an evil Wilson?

Nooooo!

don't steal of Sips even tho hes funny don't try live of his shadow not trying to be bossy

i speak for alot of peeps when i say we enjoy it when you be yourself and not somebody else

And on this day, Crown_king discovered what an insider joke it. Good job. _Q_ I agree with everything except the hurricanes and the blizzards. I just kinda don't like anything you can't counter. So far, there are countermeasures for everything in DS.
