Please make Warly worth playing.

Recommended Posts

Warly is currently both my favorite character, and the character I want to play the least.

He is very undertuned compared to other characters as of right now. Anything he does is nullified by the inconsistency of his perks. His downside is the biggest one in the game, while his upsides are slow, tedious alternatives to other things in the game.

Chili Spice or Chaud Froid are useful, but also take so long to get you could kill the boss earlier without it. Garlic takes so long to get compared to just snacking on some healing food. Honey spice takes so long to get compared to just chopping the trees normally. The temperature dishes are useful, but take so much time compared to just killing Dfly and carrying a thermal and tamo everywhere. Bone boullion? Who cares about farming onions, just get meaty stew and pierogies using meat farms and stonefruit/kelp.
Salt is the worst offender, it needs a rare ocean resource to heal you more, when you could've just made more healing food.

Fish Cordon Bleu is somewhat useful, being naturally obtained from the frog rains of spring, or especially merms. (thanks wurt players who farm warlies the ingredients in spring you're the best)

I'd say the best executed Warly dish is Glow Berry Mousse. For the cost of four glow berries that are naturally available in the area you'd need them most, you get a better effect from them than anyone else could. Fits the idea of cooking on the go while being a useful dish! Reliable as an alternate light source anywhere except the caves? Somewhat, actually!

His other perks are odd. He needs two separate buildings to use his spices, he cooks faster which is neat, but the chef pouch is terrible. Reduces food spoilage early game, would be useful if cooking a meal didn't guarantee that it would be fresh for consumption.

I want Warly to be made worth playing, to make his perks more consistent. Currently, every other character has a more consistent usecase and noticable perk that isnt just to remedy a downside. A portable version of an already existing building and poor inconsistent imitations of other character perks is all he gets. That, and the biggest downside in the game. Poor guy.

His biggest problem is that despite his special dishes heavily rely on various kinds of farm crops and veggies, he does not have any farming-related perks or abilities. This ultimately lead him into a swap character or resource-sink while Wormwood and Wickerbottom does farming for him.

Okay so here's what your gonna do. First acquire multiple butterflies, some lobsters and a chef's pouch also some meat and whatever else then we are going to grab the seasoning station. Now go to the ruins without a beefalo, we die to starvation during the rush

No but seriously he's pretty fine over all. Yes buffs would be nice but it's as bad as you make it out to be

I think Warly to be better would also require for a global change: If the crops he grows would naturally grow in specific places around the world and in specific weathers he’d still be able to make his dishes by being an explorer/sailor, even in the early game.

He also needs to get a lot more duration of the food buffs than anyone else, so he could basically keep buffing himself with various effects throughout the game without being as grindy as it would for any other character.

The things I want in a Warly skill tree broken down into a TL:DR-

Wilson’s Transmutation Skill to turn one large meat into smaller morsels or Vice Versa. Across many meats and veggies.

A huge Butchers knife (hamlets machete) which can be used as an axe for chopping, a tool to safely chop Spikey bushes or Cactus without it hurting him, and obviously as a weapon.

Re-Design his chef gimmick to be less boring to be identical to WintersFeast. cook food dishes & place them on buffet tables so instead of just ONE person getting Warlys food buffs, anyone at the table gains benefits from the feast. Also we can now actually “sit” at tables now..

Now that downsides are being lessened or outright removed Id also like to see a “less picky eater” perk, Warly isn’t at Subway this isn’t Burger King, he can’t choose what he wants or have it his way, he’s trapped in a dangerous wilderness where he needs to eat whatever he can to survive.. so a less harsh food penalty if players take up his “survivor” skill tree just sounds obvious.

And yup that’s about all the ideas I have for him.

Really, Warly just needs some personal perks that benefit himself. He has wonderful team wide synergy being able to share the dishes, but he doesn’t really have much going for himself. Even simple things like extra drops from killing mobs or increased buff durations of ~50% would go a long way.

I would also like to see a few skills that help his general gameplay loop. Considering how much you use a crockpot as Warly, I really hope he gets skills to benefit that, especially things like being able to pick dishes faster from the pot/seasonal stations, or perhaps even ways to sometimes make multiple dishes at once.

Warly is probably my most played character.

And i have to say, he is pretty dang op on the right hands.

His downsdie is actually meaningful, therefore i really like his playstyle, and his abilities snow ball very easily and give you the ability to steam rool through everything in the right situation.

I like that he is the best character in some precise situations, and not always.

Also, comboed with wickerbottom his chaud froid becomes even more broken and he can farm a ton of spices.

I love Warly, not as much as Wormwood but I enjoy him a ton. I wish his Volt Goat Jelly wasn't so hard to craft because volt goat horn are so difficult to attain. (I've never made an auto farm, nor do i plan to).

Doubling the duration of his spices and certain foods would help a ton for sure. Plus we'll find out what all gets added when he gets his skillset. I hope (and doubt) it will as devastating to the community as Wendy getting her skillset but yknow. Stuff.

I main him, i dont see how he isnt worth. Is because he doesnt have free op perks? Precisely the fun of playing warly is to work out for your power ups instead of spawning day 1 with them

No it's because farming isn't fun...for most people. Which is real shame when you consider a lot of his dishes require it.

Then there are other characters. I do like farming,  is a better system than in games focused on farming

There are but I feel like he's genuinely fun if the farming aspect was replaced with something more interesting though knowing how skill trees tend to handle that they might just bypass it all together sadly.

as someone who's only played warly in solo ds i feel that i am missing something. he's entirely fine and reasonable to play but also i know the version i've played is not the same as op's version

in single player warly does gain more hunger from cookpot food then normal, can actualy eat not pot food even if its worser, warlys special backpack has same size as normal backpack and he spawns with it in single player

that is all fair!

He also loses hunger faster than normal more or less wasting his bigger stomach as he's techinically getting less value while still consuming more food assuming you don't do the stew shuffle. I think the idea was to balance the fact he has multiple unique exclusive dishes but it fails to account for serveral design issues with hunger in dst. Your not rewarded for being creative with your food and most of unique dishes are simply not as good or cost effective as dishes available to everyone so it makes every dish that doesn't offer a special effect fluff.

Then the added issue on top of that is that you really have to enjoy farming to make use of half of his kit that's not to say he doesn't have special dishes that aren't farming related though. Non farming have the glowberry dish that gives you light for 2 days, the honey spice dish that lets you perform work related tasks faster like chopping and mining, volt goat jelly which gives you electric damage, and salt which just increases how much healing food heals you for to somewhat combat his decaying gains from repeated use though it's not very useful. It is a bit of a shame though because I really liked the idea of Warly being a sort of food alchemist who gets special ingredients for his "potions" though I guess with Wendy's recent skill she sorta picked up his mantle.

His gameplay is rewarding though if you enjoy farming

i never utilized any of those things in solo. i made the california rolls, surf n' turf, ceviche and gumbo on top of meatballs so i didnt have to "shuffle" to stay within the perimeters of his needs... of course shipwrecked is generous with fish(of course). if he has a dish for speeding up taks that would be super useful for sharing with a wes who has a reduced task execution compared to others

that is fair but Warly is far more restricted in his diet in dst while also losing hunger faster without a bonus gain to compensate it's possible to use variety just not really encouraged especially in the early days.

Idk, i like having to work to get ingredients for his dishes, is unique and would be sad to make him play like the others

Not being able to eat ingredients is what makes him one of the most interesting characters. Removing that part of his downsides would simply ruin his design...

I don't want him to play like others again I like many others don't enjoy the farming aspect it's not a fault of his character though it's farming.

The problem again isn't his it's that variety isn't rewarding in dst overall I think rather than Warly himself the mechanics he interacts with could stand to be looked at.

I wont be against some perk to help with with gardening and buffing his dishes but im totally against of removing key features like needing to gather ingredients, not being able to eat ingredients or repeating dishes having less value (neither increasing the stats he gets from food)

He got nerfed on the most in transition to DST. (*Edit, not so hard once i remember base Willow and Woodie, so i stand corrected on warly being the hardest nerf,.) Getting locked out of so many useful food groups is both a huge pain but a fulfilling challenge all the same.

Mind you he arrived pre RWYS and had tk contend with old farming to get more powerful which was a different kind of pain entirely. Nowadays RWYS makes farming more engaging to him, but as a "farming character", like the other farming characters (Wormwood and recently Wortox) he hilariously cannot use the produce from farming to its fullest effect. (Imagine being unable to eat pumpkins and potatoes tomatoes despite being the farming character producing tons of them LMAO)

Since his skill tree is still comjng up I'll reserve suggestions until then because making them now will only raise potentially unfulfillable expectations.

I agree with the sentiment that he needs more perks for himself. While I'm perfectly fine enduring his downside for the rest of the team he needs more incentive to stay playing as.

Edit: I also want his speech to be redone to accommodate his new diet. He still has SW lines where he salivates over things like jerky, cooked potato, etc, and then you get hit with the"I̴̳̣̩͛̊̒̓͠'̷̩̭́̎́̎̇m̷̖̓̂͊ ̸̘̦̱͌̔͆̚f̷̹̎̈́́́ŕ̸̢̙̠̹͆͆̚á̷̼̺͛̉̇́ṇ̶̛̖͖̂̀̔k̸̥̼͖̺̊̏ḷ̶̼̘̤͇̅y̶̪̼͎̥͇̏̐̚ ̸͓̗̲̇ͅo̴͕͒̇́f̴̺̦̦̪̺̽f̸̛͕͕̫̭̏́e̵̘̺͒̑̓ń̸̳̤̞͋̓d̴̦̣̬̊̍e̴̢̘͉͗̓͛d̵͂͑̈́͜͝͝ ̷̻̲̟͌̔ḃ̴͂̾̾̂͜y̴͉̘̬͊̓͑̅̓ ̷̧̧̛̯̠̎͑t̶̥̠͆h̸̺͛̚ę̸̜̺̌́͘̚ ̷̨̨̰̪͗̅̉͜ḿ̶̨̱̘͆̎̑͘e̵͙͔̟̝͑͛̀̾̾͜ṛ̴̢̭̝̎ę̵̣̀͌̚ ̸̩͎͇̈́̔̈̐̆s̷̫̈́ų̵̺̑́͛͋͛͜g̶̤͈͖̅̄̓͌͝g̸̟̖̳̒̓̉̚e̶̦̬̗̝̾̔ͅs̸̡̪̮̞̜̍͐t̸̝̟̺͠ḭ̷̙̭̞̪̈́̎͂͊͝o̴̟̫̠̬͑͠ņ̸̹͇̜͈̄͂͋" when you try to eat them
