What if Don't Starve Together received an official competitive mode

Recommended Posts

DST combat system is rather barebone and straightforward, there's really no skill expression outside of animation canceling. At best you'll see people playing chicken with each other, or use character gimmick to not engage in melee.

Dst combat is meant more for a PVE game, which dst is.

Fighting between other people is pretty weird honestly, and that comp mode wouldn't be played by a lot of people surely.

It'd be just time wasted for the devs.

but what if it wasn't pvp oriented

This was basically a thing during the forge and gorge events with the leaderboards.

But both game modes have been in limbo ever since.

Mind you, there were conflicts with forge leaderboards and especially over a mod exploit

There were some PVP gamemodes and balance modes, like the piggy sack mode where it's capture the flag moba type of game. Defend your pig king mode where people set up bases and combat to kill each others pig kings. PVP balancing mod that had nerfed some things like panflutes, giving time till day 12 to prepare for final deathmatch by fighting each other in an arena.

There are viable ways to make this game into any kind of gamemode and my favorite of all was the piggy sack one, I don't remember the actual name now cuz haven't interacted with it for forever now but for how chaotic it sometimes was it was pretty fun.

There's that PVP arena mod that's being hosted or sometimes hosted which is forge abilities plus powerups.

I don't think DST is very suited for official competitions, tbh.

The game isn't exactly made for it, and then there is the issue that mods can bring an unfair advantage, so the devs would need to implement some code that blocks modding from being used when participating in the competitive mode.

And when I talk about that, I am reminded of Binding of Isaac Daily Challenge leaderboards... And you could very easily see that the top scores were always cheated (or at least, they were in Afterbirth+ days. Dunno about nowadays), even though the game did block you from using mods when doing daily challenges, people still found work arounds that let them cheat themselves to the top of the leaderboards (it was stuff like, clearing a daily challenge in seconds. It just wasn't possible... It was usually just 3 or so cheated scores before the real ones appeared, but the cheated scores were always there).

So uhn... Yeah, official competitions sound like a mess tbh.

I think the unofficial competitions like speedrun competitions simply suit DST better... If anything, I guess Klei could try bringing more visibility to those by giving them some level of official support? Like giving a skin for free to the winner of the speedrun competition or something? This would make it more official in a way, but would also still have to follow the rules of the competition that make it possible for it to not be cheated... Like needing to stream your speedrun and stuff (and even then, people cheat on speedruns all the time, mind you... I think this isn't common in DST speedruns specifically, but moderators of speedrun.com and top speedrunners spend a lot of time analyzing top-level runs to make sure they aren't cheated... Because cheaters really are very common).

Could work, I guess, but it would have its own issues.

klei pls take notes

I find the combat in a PVP context pretty fun actually from my experience. It's better when you design custom gamemodes and sets of rules for a PVP event than just go on the fly with what DST offers, but if Klei was to do a Forge / Gorge (probably won't) kinda thing with PVP as the baseline I would actually be super exited for it ! At least if lag can be very minimal, that would be good.

I don't think the competitive mode would involve PVP at all. Instead, it'd effectively be different speedrun categories for solo and for groups. Who can kill Dragonfly the fastest? What's the best way to achieve a death% run? What about growing an above-average tree? Every crop as a giant?

If Klei really wanted to go all-out, they could do something like DOOM 2016's Arcade Mode and have you earn points by doing various in-game tasks, and have a leaderboard with those that automatically uploads your score when you die (worlds are one-life-only, no saving) or when you achieve the goal of the run. That'd probably have the same issue with people cheating as Arcade Mode does, though, so a moderated speedrun thing would be better.

character bans? thats a funny way to say wolfgang

Thinking more on it just about everyone would have to be banned especially Wortox with his full map warps.

One time a friend just invited me to a "x1" and I got Wortox. It was the most hilarious thing ever

A PVP competition could be interesting, I guess?

Wilson only, random spawns for everyone, needs all players in the room first before the spawns can happen, and everyone spawns simultaneously.

Revives disabled.

"1v1 me, no items, Wilson only, on Pearl's island!" - sweaty competitive mode tryhards.

I was like you before but when you play a lot of pvp you will know that yes flute are very useful but they are far from the most op things in pvp
