Why is it not more common to build 2 Scaled Furnaces?

Recommended Posts

You nearly always get 2 scales from Dragonfly, but one furnace only heats up a thermal stone to 40 degrees. 2 furnaces gets it much hotter (equivalent to burning trees) which allows for more travel time in winter. Why is this not more common? I only ever see people have one.

people sometimes use the other scale to make scale turf so they can clone it using deconstruction staffs.

Having 2 furnaces before Winter is an immediate benefit, by the time you have dcon staves to spare, you can just re-fight dragonfly.

Ive never done it just because it doesnt look good imo.

i also frequently plop down my first early game “survival” base in the dfly desert near the lava pools which is how i heat thermals in that case. And in the late game once ive moved away from dfly desert and begun setting up my proper base i use sunfish once i have them, 1 in my pocket and 4 in a bundle if i plan to be away from the fish bin for a while.

since the addition of the ice crystaleyezer sunfish have become a lot more desirable for me. They take care of both winter and summer at base! And sailing has improved a lot so seeking them out doesnt feel as bad now.

When playing as Wicker though i like using Tam + puffy or bearger vest once i have it + Tempering Temperatures in winter. Its fun!

I have 2 worlds. 12000 day and 1600 day.
on my 12000 day, I have many outposts where there are 4 scaled furnaces with at least 1 thermal stone.

on my my 1600 day, there exists only 1 scaled furnace in the entire world.

It's just a lot of work, and for what? I have a mild contempt for scaled furnaces, since klei had the perfect opportunity to introduce batch cooking into the game, but instead made them into garbage cans. The worst part is, they're probably going to give batch cooking to the King of Switch characters, Warly.

When I refer to warly as the king of switch characters, it is most definitely a pejorative. That is not a good title to have.

It’s a nice QOL benefit later on. I personally use quad setups for my needs, and it’s certainly noticeable how much more time you get with a heated thermal away from a furnace with 4 of them compared to 1. The QOL update to make placing structures noticeably closer especially helps with this.

Really the only reason I don’t use many more of them is I personally like using hot dragon chili salad later on as my way to get through winter without having to rely on a source of heat throughout the winter, but that’s fairly exotic and certainly not something that’s as simple as making a few furnaces/thermals and very occasionally repairing the thermals.

Most people don't know how temperatures work and even one furnace will heat thermal stone until it is red.

I usually build 3 furnaces as close as possible and a chest in the middle with multiple thermal stones there to swap out.

the thermal stone becomes red even when it has twice as many degrees to go, like becoming red at 45 while it can go to 90.

one furnace cannot exceed like 50?

two furnaces is 70

so you still are losing 20 degrees of heat you could use

I have a starcaller by first winter so no point in being bound to one location.

Alternatively on my prefered donut worlds my scaled furnace is on a boat and as I sail the inner donut hole of the land I don't need more than one (plus wouldn't fit well).

Since I learned the furnace has a somewhat new Incinerator function, I only need 1. I use to use 0. I'd rather have a Scaled Chest if I ever end up killing Dfly. Plus I play solo so I only ever get 1 scale per kill cause I don't want to farm gunpowder just for an extra scale.

That's news to me. Does the same principle apply to crowding together multiple firepits?

Yes, so does stacking dwarf stars/fireballs but there are diminishing returns. There is some info about it on the wiki: https://dontstarve.wiki.gg/wiki/Freezing#Game_Mechanics

I think a lot of people simply don't understand that more than 1 next to each other is a pretty big boost.

Also, I mean at least on console, I wouldn't say 2 is guaranteed. It's hard for me to get 2 scales alone as Wanda even with animation canceling because of animation canceling speed differences. To consistently get 2 scales you'll need to be using Wolfgang, spicy jelly, etc.
