Lemme stir things

Shortly: Saladmanders are pun on salad and salamander.

Saladmanders despite apperance are not lizards but amphibians, which means they are not dragons (rather frogs lol) despite dragonfruit origin in the game. Despite all love for them and increasing disappointment for many people I don't really see them as viable candidate for YOTD. Instead I suggest forgotten, almost-not-cute, Grass Geckos that are lizards and need some more love.

Saladmanders Already have an Interaction with DragonFruit, you can turn Dragonfruit into Saladmanders using the Mad Scientist Lab from the Hallowed Nights Event.

and I really wish people would know that, so that they’d stop suggesting a feature that’s already in the game to be what we get from a New Event.

So the TL:DR- I agree that event should focus on Grass Geckos over the already been done before Saladmanders.

But I’d prefer an actual new Chinese Dragon like mob in the game overall- Year of The Catcoon added Biome themed kittens… surely we can get a small floating dancing dragon mob? <3

You can't classify anything as a dragon. Cause dragons don't exist, yes even bearded dragons and komodo dragons. It's not a real classification therefore anhything that mildly resembles a dragon can be called a dragon.

I clearly remember someone mention Saladmander as a contender for Year of the Dragon. I wholeheartedly agree. Being able to make a custom warming station that isn't the Scaled Furnace would be nice as my swarm of Saladmanders roam the world since I made them from Dragonfruit and the Lunar Experiment.

And who says Dragons are reptiles? I've not once seen that claim. Dragons are most likely to be reptiles based on common mythologies depicting them as serpents or lizard-like but I think the Chinese dragon is probably the least reptilian of all dragons in history.

Fun fact,  reptile isn't an accepted classification anymore since 'reptile' don't group the animals within based on closer ancestors

That is actually a fun fact. Didn't realise turtles were closer related to birds than lizards. Huh.

After double checking, I think you got turtles mixed up there. I am using LifeGate2022 and found this:

Granted I know basically nothing about this. I just looked it up cause I was curious.

Ye, I forgot to say that i don't know how accurate is the picture

The important thing is that birds are dinosaurs close to turtles xD

Do dragon fly.

If I may share some trivia, their original design was apparently to be a Gecko.

In fact, their old unused model was named Hot Spring Gecko, at that.
You can see the unused one here, note it was seemingly meant to be able to bloom and drop its tail as an item. The shaking animations are present, yet unused, in the current one, too!

They're almost identical, just with differing animation sets and a unique tail that can bloom. And are also super, super tiny!

I really thought it was a foregone conclusion that it would be the Year of the Dragonfly. It's the most explicitly dragon-like thing in the game.

We haven't had a proper boss-themed New Year yet, so a Rudolphclops-type reskinning of the Dragonfly fight could be fun.

Wait, they had a “d” in their name the entire time?
In all my trips to the lunar island and interactions with them I’ve never noticed a single time
I’m totally flabbergasted

None of the previous year of events have been about fighting a huge health points Raid Boss, so it would feel highly out of place to get a Year of Event that revolves around fighting a Raid Boss.

Year of Events usually involve creating a Trading Shrine to exchange Lucky Golden Nuggets for various foods/base decorations/event items.

You only need to look at all the previous Year of Events to confirm this-

Most Year Of Events have included adding a new Mini-Game to the Trade Keepers Inn, as well as an In-Game Mini Game

Year of the Beefalo- Beefalo Dressing Contest,

Year of the Carrat- Rat Race Tracks,

Year of the Bunnyman- Pillow Fighting Arena.

I’m going to firmly say players expecting the event to revolve around a Raid Boss are going to be highly disappointed.

However: You might get lucky and get a Dragonfly Boss fight rework Alongside this Year of Event, perhaps maybe an updated way of obtaining Extra Adorable Larvae (such as throwing a cold thermal stone into her magma pool to force one out of hiding)

Dragonfly will probably be changed so that she is sleeping until you awaken her, or summon her or something- Because Just having this 27,500 Hp boss just standing around waiting for players to pass through her biome has always been and continues to be- A Noob Death Sentencing.

We may even end up getting some silly trading item that we can offer to Dragonfly as a Peace Offering so it won’t attack us until we attack it anymore.

Like how the Cult of the Lamb Crossover made the Sandcastle Bucket more common so you can obtain the Antlions loot drops without having to kill her Adorable Cat-Like cuteness <3

Again none of the past animals have an actual boss other than the varg, what else would it be then huh? There is no other creature in dst that is a dragon and no i don't think they are just going to willy nilly bring over the dragoons from shipwrecked

Would be awesome if dfly gets another skin for the dragon year.

I doubt klei would make saladmanders the main being for the year due to the fact most players are going to find dfly first before saladmanders. Plus, dfly is very iconic among ds/dst players, it would be foolish not to make the dragon year without the iconic dragon that is also a fly that would happily slap you six feet under.

Ofc they won't, after they tried their hardest  to not bring tiger shark for year of the tiger. Yes, im still salty. One would think they hate solo DLC content.

The problem with dragonfly is that it’s hard to have interactions based on it while it has a somewhat long respawn timer.

That can be worked around, but Saladmanders may be a path of least resistance, already having hot tub mechanics built in.
