personally, i think it's really good, but the fact that it counts both as armor and a weapon makes it really brittle. one hound wave that you're not eyeing the durability and BAM, there goes your shield of terror, idiot

so how do you guys feel about it as a weapon? good, bad, or indifferent about it?

I think baring planar damage its great!  I wouldn't change a thing.

Of course planar shelves it since its primary strength is being great for those day-to-day combat situations and planar is part of a lot of that now.  Repair kits are pretty OP too.

It's really good for day-day use for all the reasons said already. That being said though, it's also locked behind the Twins of Terror, so... yeah. If it did get a buff, it should be a rework for the twins.

This. The shield is usually available way after the period where it shines.  Not something I would spend 3/4 days trying to get in early game too.

The shield is an underwhelming reward for a difficult and long boss battle.

Oh, I'm the only voter for nerf. It can stay the same, but definitely not in need of a buff.

It is the only noncharacter-specific weapon in the game that is refuellable to my knowledge. That in and of itself is huge. It's also the only weapon that can act as armor, so it frees up both helmet and armor slots for utility in a way no other weapon can. The boss is available day 1 which means you can kill it only as soon as you have the skill and ability to do so (and if eye wants to spawn on the correct person...). While the newest weapons, dreadstone and brightshade, are similarly repairable, they are the most late game equipment available and take enormous work to obtain. The shield has a great 51 damage benchmark which is nice because most enemy hp's are divisible by 50 so no damage or time is wasted in each attack. It is quickly refueled with raw monster meat, which let's be honest, is incredibly easy to have an excess of these sitting in the fridge, and easy to build monster meat farms. I could be wrong, but the shield seems to attack slightly faster than most weapons because it uses a different animation.

I think a nerf would make sense for those reasons, and with the game developing a robust late game, it gives the developers a chance to give us some really good weapons that would totally outshine the shield (because these new items being released - dreadstone/brightshade - are locked behind an enormous amount of content, there should be a rewarding item that respects the scope of work that needs to be done to make it to the late game boss content, serves the defensive weapons role, and mostly outclasses the shield of terror)

I wrote about this a few days ago, but in short I think the shield is a great concept/weapon that you just get a tad too late to shine much. By the time you get it, you likely are almost to the point of getting post rift gear, which is usually more convenient to use is most cases while also being repairable.

As for how I feel about that, I think it’s personally the fact the shield is a tad too difficult to get, with the brightshade gear being fine. I think the repair kits are balanced well, given that you still need to go out of your way to get the materials to make the kits at the station and the fact said gear is normally only available after champ/weaver justifies its power a lot. It should least be able to be used as reliably as weapons/armor and the like prior, and the kits help keep it this way while being unique in doing so.

I think the shield either needs a buff (a small amount of planar defense/damage would go a long way, although the latter would be a bit harder to justify since only defense is used pre rifts) or for the twins to be reworked to be a more fun fight that in turn makes it easier to get the shield without having to spend 4-5 nights to get while also making sure everyone is by the terrarium every single time a night occurs.

Its the same reaosn why you often use darkswords over hambats. Damage saves resources.

This is a full lie, you can fight the boss since day 1. The rest is skill and endurance since you get many breaks.

The thing is, it’s a commitment to that fight. If you miss one night, the terrarium goes on cooldown and all the progress you did is wasted. This makes it unsuitable for getting very early on unless you are committed to it.

As also mentioned, it presents a big deal on pub servers/any server with more than 1 player. It could spawn on you, the player next to you, or the Wigfrid on a boat 5 miles away. This also doesn’t exactly help it’s case, either…

It is good, I just detest using it.

Out of curiosity, why is that?

It seems like a decent weapon in my uses, is it the concern of it breaking or perhaps its easy to replenish nature?

Yeah this ain't really true, in one of my worlds I have had the shield for like half a year now, but I'm still ways away from rifts, cause I ain't in a hurry

The only buff I'd like to see is for it not to break when reaching 0%. Cause if you're not careful, which in all honesty you just should be, it can break really easily as others have mentioned. Because it isn't that easy to get back once it does. While the fight itself isn't that difficult if you use a pan flute to separate them, you can only battle the suckers every 20 days, which is long enough already if you're trying to get shields for multiple people.

Though it's fair to say that, if it no longer breaks, then there's not much incentive left for fighting the Twins again.

precisely the early you get it the better...

the twins is a perfect fight to do in 1st winter after rushing the ruins since you can beat them in 2 or 3 nights sinxe are longer. You can simply bring the terrarium with you and every night stop to fight them while you were doing other stuff like hunting mctusk or looking after klaus summoning stuff

I tried it out once. The damage is okay, the durability repairing part is nice, but god forbid if you got hit your durability is gonna get cut by a lot so you have to really pay attention to it's durability. Personally, it's more trouble than it's worth. It also doesn't help that it's gated behind one of the more obnoxious and optional boss in the game.

Animation and the fact it is a crossover item. I detest crossovers. Thankfully you can disable it in world settings so it's a non-issue.
