Griefers Report

Recommended Posts

Hello Klei developers!

Is there any chance to get some kind of grief reporting system into the game?

It's really frustrating when someone spends a few hours on a server and is alone... and then 1 or 2 russians/ukrainians join just to burn the base and laugh at you.

Since there is no 'in-game' way of reporting those scums, they are pretty much free to destroy someone's work without any consequences.

Every single other online game has some kind of ... well, prevention from grief/abuse actions.

I know - rollback and ****. Well.. it's impossible to kick a griefer without other people voting.

If You're too lazy/incapable or just don't want to code this reporting system, then just add a possibility of using telelocator staf on players. This way players could try to send a griefer to 'jail' on a boat or something. At least they would be harmless.

If Klei let people use telelocator staffs on players, griefers would just telelocate people to Moon Quay and watch them get robbed by monkeys until they either starve to death or die fighting them. I hope they take this suggestion of yours for that reason because that sounds hilarious.

In all seriousness, though, it's silly to rely on a company to moderate individual servers for you in a non-competitive game that grants as much player freedom as this one does. Player-based moderation has worked since the dawn of multiplayer and continues to work to this day, and in the vast, vast majority of cases, when someone griefs in a Klei server, they get promptly kicked and whatever damage they do is undone by a rollback. The only point of failure is that in servers you don't host, you can only roll back to the last time the game saved and timing a grief properly (example: burning base right before dawn) lets a griefer abuse that. The fix there, though, is just to let the person calling the vote pick how many days to roll back, not to expect Klei to spend a bunch of time and effort developing a top-down moderation system that's completely unnecessary.

If you're unwilling to deal with the fact that people are sometimes mean and do bad things, you're unwilling to deal with the environment you'll find outside of a world hosted by you or your friends (which is free to do and actually lets you save and continue, in addition to letting you outright ban players and roll back more than a day!), which it sounds like you should do instead. Human interaction necessarily includes good and bad, and this is the nature of anything multiplayer, especially multiplayer with strangers - hosting a world yourself and/or playing with only your friends lets you avoid more of the bad and gives you more control if you encounter it.

I see no reason as to why their background was brought up.

Vote kicks are the intended feature. But as you mentioned, you'd need other players.

I don't believe there's any safe/foolproof way of making an anti-grief system. Most usually have dire flaws that'd take away from dev time.
Using Telelocators is a feature with PVP enabled, otherwise I'd rather it not be enabled on non PVP servers as it can start fires and doesn't actually do much in favor of preventing griefing.

You may want to look into private servers, or hosting your own where you can moderate them properly.

Klei did a good job with that spawn protection thing. It does a pretty good job at protecting new joins and I haven't noticed any drawbacks. As for a preventing griefing something other than the Florid Postern I don't think it's possible for a system that isn't just open for more abuse than it prevents.

Indestructible structures could prevent people from building (and cause people to unintentionally cause problems), locked chests could allow all the resources to be stashed away (and cause people to unintentionally cause problems), fireproof structures don't prevent hammering but do prevent natural dangers that you're supposed to deal with, automatic reports would obviously be open to botting or just a group of friends/alts, so on and so forth.

The only good way to stop griefers is to manually ban them, which is already available on the many different community servers. Klei doesn't want to become the arbiters on what is or is not griefing (nobody can agree on anything other than someone walking up to a base with people currently standing in it and just setting everything on fire), and they don't want the hassle of needing to get moderators in the first place. I agree with their decision, and think their time is better spent on the game instead of their servers. Klei servers are extremely ephemeral anyways, even if it doesn't get explicitly griefed it's still gonna be gone tomorrow anyways. Griefing isn't a big problem. Just use Klei servers to find friends to play with on other servers, or as fun little low investment social things.

russians/ukrainians

You'll forgive me very much, but you sound like the most insistent xenophobe....

Griefers are an extensive concept covering all countries, so you don't need to specify it so much, it doesn't look very nice

Гриферы - это обширное понятие, охватывающее все страны, поэтому вам не нужно так подробно его уточнять, это выглядит не очень красиво

@Создатель болот I agree.

Let's be more positive on the internet. No matter how this is one of the most pleasant communities in my opinion and I would not like to see any insults towards other countries and nations in it

It would be interesting to see a system to jail a player based on votes. Send them to a limbo in the server and prevent them from logging out. Just waste their time for wasting yours.

Ever heard of Ark Survival Evolved hostage situation? You could get knocked out, handcuffed, put in cage. And you can't do anything. You can't suicide, to respawn, can't create a new character. You will be force fed, so you don't die to respawn.

But yea, this is the answer.
Publics servers are crazyland.
Even if you don't want to host one, there are community-hosted servers with their own Discord communities for moderation and lasting ban lists.

I don't like profiling but russians do like a lil bit of trolling
