Shadow Chess Pieces' missing unique drops

Recommended Posts

I've been waiting for a proper time to post this, and now that Host of Horrors, an update focusing on the Lunar side is out, I figure this'd be as good a time as any.

As it currently stands, Shadow Chess Pieces don't have any unique drops to their respective forms. Once all 3 are toppled, they'll drop the Atrium, and a DarkSword/Nightmare Armor.

Although I distinctly recall hearing that these were placeholders from a dev at a time. Whilst I wasn't able to recover the message, I can confirm that these drops are currently placeholder.

Tracing back to their first inception, there's a comment on their drops stating this:

Following this, its noted that each Chess Piece would've had unique drops.
There's no proper stats or visuals for each item, but we have their names.

The Knight would've dropped the Shadow Crest.
The Rook, the Shadow Lance.
And the Bishop, the Shadow Mitre and Sceptre.

With Host of Horrors out, I'd assume the next logical step would be tackling the Shadow side again. With that said, I'd love to see if these old things could be brought to light!

Probably most of the people when fought the first time those bosses, thought that each one in the last stage would drop a special item/weapon/armor. At first I was surprised when other people had the same idea as I, but I realised everyone somehow thought the same. And seeing these things in the code, it justs shows that even the devs at some point had the same idea:grin:

The lance should increase beefalo dmg (flat amount), and maybe add planar dmg to beefalo (or add an end game lance that does).

Actually, now that I think about it... Beefalo need end-game dmg. It would be great if you held a weapon and that increases the beef dmg and maybe lost some durability over time.

Maybe the dmg added could scale off player dmg multiplier so wendy wouldn't get a big boost but wolf would. (And Maxwell would have to sacrifice the thurible or us the thurible instead)

I have the felling that these drops now are the FW drops, except for the lance.

would give a reason to upgrade the Bishop!

That would require reworking the bishop, since it's attack is nearly unavoidable and deals a lot of damage atm if you aren't using boat cheese. Knight too probably, but idk if you can kite the tier 3 knight.

I mean I would be up for an AG style rework of the shadow pieces too, don't remember the t3 Knight being kiteable either.

Fused Shadeling's quotes imply that they are the same creature that Daywalker shakes off in his first phase. This means that The shadow creatures can be upgraded to a stronger version of themselves with the power of the rifts and the pure horror.

I would love to see this idea gets another look. However, currently, when you compare it to lunar side, shadow side has way too many items in the early game and way to little in the late game.

So my suggestion is: Give us the Pure Horror versions of the Shadow pieces, let them drop different items if you kill them in their last phase. And give us these crafts as new endgame loot.

Thank you @-Variant for bringing this idea right at the time and please Klei, The Names of the items sound extremely cool to not add them to the game.

It would be great if we could summon "Shadow Chess" during Rift , thereby strengthening them. we would have new bosses in the caves, as well as improved old ones, as was the case with the deerclops and other zombie bosses!

Would give a reason to fight the other 2 shadow pieces that aren't the Rook, though I guess the Knight is used for farming these days...would give a reason to upgrade the Bishop!

I definitely want this

Rook is the best if you're solo and fast enough to dodge him, knight is the best with a group since he can only hit one target at a time, Bishop is the best if you're Wanda, Wortox, or Wendy since they have character specific methods of dealing with him that are easier than the rook.

Strange, I've had a much much easier time dodging the Rook than the Bishop as Wanda, probably just my inexperience fighting the Bishop
