Rhymes with Play Tidbits on Future Content

So if I choose triumphant wormwood and choose alter as my faction or choose moonbound wormwood and choose shadow as my faction, will charlie and alters brain implode? Is this the secret ending?

Yes. He wanders the world, or at least appears randomly. Found him in my savanna.

What the pskkshshs *static* doin

How exactly the lunar/shadow side picking will be, like Wilson's leveling system? If it is NOT, will Wurt, Wanda, Webber, Wortox will have it too? Because they are not on the chess table for some reason.

And yeah, Wilson is not there too but it might be bc Wilson died or picked Waggstaf side idk lol

The phrasing in the stream seemed to imply that even though right now the only character with a side-picking mechanic is Wilson, others will be coming in the future.

To me this suggests that either:

  1. More playable characters will be gaining the insight skill trees feature. This makes some sense to me, given that a number of Wilson's insight powers seem like they would fit other characters better anyway (by which I mostly mean Willow). When they added Insight to Wilson, my impression was that it was meant to emulate the experience gaining feature of DS Solo, where you gained access to more characters with more powers the more days you survived. Now Wilson gains more access to more powers the more days you survive. It would make some sense for that to apply to other characters too, although it would fit some better than others.
  2. Other playable characters will be getting new features tied to picking sides. The first example that comes to mind is WX-78. At present, WX-78's circuits are probably the closest thing to insight any non-Wilson character has. WX-78 starts the world weaker than most, but through active gameplay can build upon themselves and choose exactly how they want to distribute their abilities. Having to learn, craft, and then choose which circuits to install is very similar to a skill tree already. It could totally see a Shadow Circuit and Moon Circuit becoming available to WX by scanning/defeating Fuelweaver and Celestial Champion, with your side being determined by which of the circuits you install. Other characters might have this implemented via craftables, like Wickerbottom having an Advanced Shadow Book and Advanced Moon Book she has to decide between.

They also said that defeating Fuelweaver/Celestial Champion or even activating the lunar rifts are not irreversible parts of choosing a side, so the decision making mechanic would have to be something more specific than just doing that. Now they might just introduce a simple in-game way to do it for every character, but Wilson's unique side-choosing mechanic suggests to me it will be more character specific. Conveniently, this would allow Klei to do mini character refreshes on the characters fans have been asking for changes to, such as Willow or Winona, without having to do massive overhauls for every single character.

I really hope the side choosing is not skill trees for everyone because that would just be so boring

Considering that even with a skill tree nothing is stopping you from using all side items at the same time as Wilson, it probably will end with "the side you choose will not hinder you" so you'll have to choose which rifts will stop spawning.

What I'm trying to say is when even Wilson who already has a skill tree doesn't have a "choose side" button that completely locks him out from other content then adding ST for other characters would be a waste of time.

Well I don't think It's supposed to stop you from using the opposite side items it more like the items of the side you chose are stronger

The "choose side" feature for Wilson does lock him out of the benefits he would get from choosing the other side though, right? For instance, lunar aligned Wilson has to give up on the ability to transmute nightmare fuel/pure horror/dreadstone? I would imagine this same cost analysis would have to figure into every character choosing a side.

Skill trees aren't necessarily the best way to do it, but having characters choose between one bonus and another does seem like a pretty basic part of the "two sides" system. Damage resistance/bonus from corresponding sides is a given, but since Wilson also gets unique transmuting abilities out of the decision I figured other playable characters would receive comparable opportunities.

Honestly it doesn't even register as a perk in my head x.x all these materials are abundant enough so I completely forgot. Fair point, but there are other ways to achieve the same goal without the tree (thinking of an item like the key to the city to name one)

I was under the impression that choosing a side just meant picking to wear the lunar armor or the shadow armor that was shown in the teaser- I REALLY don’t see it getting much more complex than that.

it took Klei 4+ years to rework the entire character cast, and y’all think they’re just gonna add Lunar/Shadow skill trees to each of them now? LoL… No.

It’s simple: You can’t get the damage boost of Brightshade tools if you’re wearing the Shadow Armor.

hate to break it to those of y’all expecting some massive game changing “side picking” mechanic, but that is technically still needing to choose a side.

Hate to break it to you but they did say that characters will be able to pick sides by doing something

For all you know, that could be referring to the “ending” of the game & the faith of what happens to that character at the end of the story (rather they stay in the constant, go home, get a good/bad ending.. etc.) it does NOT mean that everyone’s suddenly going to get a Wilson perk skill tree. That would be another 4+ years of character re-refreshes.

And I’d rather Klei focus on other areas of the game instead of reworking characters again.

i'm not saying that it's going to be another stupid skill tree but they did say that you will have to do something to pick sides and it's not only going to be an armor switch and now while we are at it why would they even be talking about the ending?

"For all you know" indeed. We genuinely don't know how they plan to incorporate characters picking sides, but it's clearly a central theme in the coming series of updates. The last two updates have teased it and they brought it up multiple times in this stream. It is possible it's a purely narrative concept that will have minimal effect on gameplay, but chances are it affect gameplay in some capacity. They have said it will be more than just existing weapons having type advantages and disadvantages, it's just not clear how much. They said that right now "only Wilson" is able to pick sides, which alone demonstrates that it's just more than choice of weapon (even if Wilson's benefit is minimal).

I definitely agree that a massive overhaul of every character or giving them all skill trees would both be poor uses of Klei's time. But I don't think giving characters another unique craftable or two as part of larger From Beyond updates would constitute that. WX-78 being given a Shadow Circuit and Lunar Circuit wouldn't require much of a change and can be engaged with at the player's leisure, for example. I guess my point was that this would also let Klei sneak in any tweaks/balances that would clearly help QoL for the character, but don't justify entire overhauls.

  • Jason would like to do more stuff in the vein of the Reap What You Sow/ Crafting UI Update where older content is updated and/or expanded

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but out of everything on the list, this is the thing I'm most interested in. I don't know who Jason is, but I'm rooting for them.
