I made an all-character tutorial compendium for DST

Recommended Posts

Hey, guys... So, I'm a little nervous about this, but I wanted to share a video that I just made. It's a tutorial I've been working on that talks about each of the characters and gives some tips and strategies tailored to their individual traits and abilities.

I've been doing a lot of research on this one by studying a lot of guides I've been seeing on Youtube and other various places, so I wanted to put all of my research and thoughts into one place. I truly hope that you guys might find it enjoyable.

Cool guide, have you considered finding some grass and twigs and taming a beefalo though? I haven't tried it myself but I've heard many good things about this strategy from others.

Crud... I don't think I was able to cover that on this one. Maybe I'll make an addendum at some point.

It's been 8 hours since I last watched this 20 hour long documentary and BOY am I feeling so much better at Distraught Starvers Tomorrow

I've went from dying on day 1 to dying on day 1 with a stack of grass and twigs. This guide works and I'd recommend it to every single Donny's Stove Tops beginner, advanced and even slightly-more-advanced advanced player.

Unironically I’ve met players with fresh, first time installed DST and 2 hours of game time, that never played DS before either, but since they’ve been watching many YT videos they come and ask ā€œok help me I need to raid the ruinsā€ or ā€œI need to tame a beefaloā€.

They usually proceed alone on their epic journey, and die to darkness on day 3 or 4.

Great, they are learning the game by dying,Ā  there are nothing wrong about that, atleast better chance of enjoy this game than those never watch any guide and die to darkness strait on day 1 and quit the game.
Dont tell me you never die on day 1~2~3~4 before.

what filter/color cube mod/whatever are you using to achieve such over-saturated colors? me likey.

Thanks, that means a lot to me! I meant to pin a comment about that, since I expected it might come up. It's called the "Color Adjustment Mod" on the Steam Workshop.

These are the settings I personally use on it, if you're wondering:

Ehhhh... Real talk; I'm inclined to disagree. I think it's better for a player to learn how to walk before they can run. If they want to dive in without instruction, that's one thing. More power to them. But that isn't what a guide is for. I think it's bad practice to use a guide to give the impression that there is only one way they should play the game, all while failing to convey the fundamentals to a new player. Like teaching them to play the piano by starting them off on an expert-level concerto and telling them they're not good until they learn how to play that and only that. Plus, I think it's silly to have a sprawling, open-ended game like this and teach players to ignore all of it and just hyperfocus on one or two goals apropos of nothing.

Nope I have Nothing against learning the game.

You missed the point; a lot of people confuse that taming a beefalo or raiding the ruins are the main goals of the game, and something you can do as soon as you start playing.

Of course it’s nice to have fun goals to learn, but skipping all the survival aspects first, is naive.

They usually proceed alone on their epic journey, and die to starvation on day 3 or 4.

Nah, it's the "fixed it for you" meme. With an equally or more likely plausible scenario involving new players.

I think they are trying to make fun of ShadowDuelist

the rearranged words were to show how shadowduelist's comment sounds unnecessarily rude towards new players, curiously nobody seemed to have a problem with the comment when it brought up ruins rushing but changing that to "gathering food" makes it sound mean and gatekeepy because it always was to begin with

I was making the point that I don't think it's ok to make fun of new players regardless of whether they're attempting """""tryhard"""" strategies or not, they don't even know any better and aren't trying to show off or anything so it doesn't justify being made fun of, just let them learn the game

I do not think he is mocking these people rather as a public-server player he is expressing his frustration about these types of new comers in community servers. These players are a nuisance: they often hammered all pig houses for armors to rush ruin or gather ALL grasses and twigs and even berries in the world, leave nothing for everyone, catering to their beefalo while leeching off the base, bring the most valuable items to ruin to die needlessly with it (In fact, I can't even count how many times I've seen a dead corpse or a monkey with a panflute - who came up with the "bring panflute to ruin" strategy, anyway?). While I don't have any issue with ruinrush or beefalo taming early and EFFICIENTLY, promoting this type of new players in public servers is not acceptable. They can do it alone on their own servers - do it on public servers they deserve to be criticized accordingly. Also, it is very clear that they are trying to SHOW OFF when they do it on public servers.Ā

you're partaking in the exact same thing I was calling out

How exactly? I am just pointing out why ruin rushing or beefalo taming is very frowned upon in a public server setting. Ruin rush alone in your private servers? Good for you! But again, in public servers, it is stupid and selfish when you take 40 plus pig skins and the panflute to only die of slump monkey or gather all grasses, twigs, food on the surface and leave everyone to die in the darkness on day 10 (which happened way too frequently than it should be and borderline griefing if you are playing on community group server)

What wrong about ruin rushing? It's literally free resources for people who skill enough. I dont see anyone ruin rush and hammer 20 pigs houses just for armor. If people on surface die to darkness on day 10, that on them, that not because there are people are going to ruin.
If noone ruin rush, people will die to cold on day 20~35.

What wrong with beefalo taming? It's literally the best armor + weapon pieces in the game. It use butt slots, which always free, 1000 hp, self repair, 34~50 damage, infinity durabilty, can be heal by veggie food.

When you do both, it's actually the best way to ruin rush in pub. Beefalo as armor in your butt so you dont need to hammer pig houses for helmet. Cave light bulb is a good food source for taming beefalo, as they are plenty in cave near ruin, and can be pick up much faster than grass/twigs.

If someone taming beefalo, taming them ruin rush will be much lessĀ nuisance than taming them in base and eat all grass and twigs.
