Wilson is now legally a swap character

and maxwell, woodie, wormwood, wendy, winona, warly, maxwell, wanda, wurt, wickerbottom, wigfrid...

the fact that they added general community suggestions into a character like getting shards from teeths or crafting gems with other gems is a sign that they want to reward people who uses the mechanic to change character they added back in the day

which saddens me slightly. The Celestial Portal feels like cheating to me. But whatevs, My choice to use it or not.

You imply Wilson being a swap character is a bad thing. Which its definitely not.

My biggest issue with Wanda, a example of a non swap character, is that you could spend 200 days setting up a rift watch network to every corner of the map but if you ever get sick of roleplaying as a time traveling old/young/whatever lady...

And decide to switch to another character to enjoy other characters personalities to prevent boredom on long running world, you lose out in that rift watch network you wasted 200 days creating... almost pressuring you to not switch off Wanda. Non of her abilities are available if you swap out.. ill rather swap to wolfgang for boss fights than alarming clock Wanda. There is no reason to play wanda at all!! If you character swap often.

Atleast we have a reason to swap to Wilson sometimes now lol

Why does people care about swap characters? I personally played AND still is playing Maxwell not only because of his abilities, but also for his persona, looks, quotes and so on.

Maybe if people cant stick to one character and swap em like socks, maybe its their problem?

I can swap Wilson for Wilson to swap his skills.
Each Wilson is personalized.

Today - Im a Willow fan boy Wilson, my torch is brightest thing that shines in this world.

Tomorrow - Im a wizard Wilson, I can turn minerals into diffrent minerals!

As for yesterday... I didnt had a rework!

Yes, that's the point. If you stop playing a character, then you stop getting that character's benefits. That's not an oversight or a bad design. That's just how it should work.

You don't like playing Wanda because you'll loose your rift network. But you know what would happen if you didn't loose it? Then nobody would play Wanda at all. Becuase they could just choose any other character, swap to Wanda day 69 to turn all their tusks into all their tusks into rift watches, and then swap back before never touching her again. Just like what already happens with Winona and her Catapults.

Anyways, You could half-argue that Wilson's a swap character now. But the only resource he can transmute that I'd think would ever be worth it are gems. So I'm not to worried about it.

You can full argue that he's a swap character. If someone doesn't like that they can get the best parts of Winona, Warly, Wickerbottom, Maxwell, etc without needing to permanently play as them then they should 100% dislike that the only notable thing Wilson does is transmute items.

i always found characters to be more fun when they had swap perks but maybe im just a smelly meta tryhard :(

i personally almost never change character, atleast no in solo worlds, but i think is a very good thing to have

On the topic of swapping characters I think it would be really neat if there was certain parts of the game that dare I say this.. “Required” you to swap to a specific character.

and I’m not just talking about silly little character perks, I mean maybe there’s a boss out there somewhere that doesn’t deem any other character BUT Wolfgang as being Mighty enough to challenge them. & you could only engage with this content if you play Wolfgang.

Just like Wickerbottom could get some sort of sealed off moon cave she can only open with the power of her books, and the cave will only open in the presence of “the Librarian”

In short: it gives me a reason to actively swap between characters, I already (sort of..) do this when it comes to visiting the Water-Logged biome I always go as Webber just so Water Gilding spiders don’t absolutely ruin my day.

But I’d like it to extend much deeper than that, instead of viewing the Celestial Portal as being a “Cheaty” thing we should be actively using it often as sort of a late game “progress” type thing.

No thank you, I don't want to swap my character because the game needs me to. This character swapping thing should stay as a side thing and not  something that is a requirement for progress.

It would depend ultimately on how well it was handled, I’m an old school gamer so I recall games like Sonic the Hedgehog where there was walls that only Knuckles could punch his way through. Etc..

Example if a Wickerbottom exclusive upgrade was hidden in that underground sealed moon cave, why should you care if Wilson can go in that cave or not?

I just picture Wolfgang as being the guy they intend for you to fight bosses with, I mean you can’t really go wrong with dealing 2x damage.. using any other character for that is just intentionally handicapping yourself.

people swap characters as sort of an “optional” thing, they can choose to do or not do but since it’s a DIRECT upgrade to the Florid Postern, it’s safe to assume that it’s meant to be seen as an Upgraded Florid Postern.

Now rather you feel that’s “cheaty” or not is entirely up to your personal preferences but it is still a thing that in the game that requires work to unlock & use, and I’d kinda like to see it used a bit more often.

I'd rather have this mechanic but remove the celestial portal. My personal preference. The portal takes away character negatives and only focuses on the positives. If you want a miniboss that only Wolfgang can access, or some walled off area for Wicker, or some song Wigfrid can sing, it would be cool to encounter said area in the constant but be like "Well shoot I have to try with a different character next time." Start up a whole new world and find it in that one.

But maybe that is too archaic for modern games?

This concept does sound kind of fun honestly but I doubt the community as a whole would be for it.

While I get it imagine the possibility of character specific side quest bosses for personal character progression rather than required progression.

On the idea of swap characters... I like it when characters have both something that's swap-worthy AND something that's play-worthy. So you get at little something that shows a character was in the world and left something to help out, but also they're fun in their own merit. Not a character to swap in, use ability, swap out for better. But also can do some small thing that benefits others when they leave.

I think Wilson's going in the right direction for that. The non-alchemy perks might need a bit of a buff to match up, but in the right direction of having both locked to him and stop-n-swap aid.
