It would depend ultimately on how well it was handled

it would depend of the gane genre and a survival sandbox isn't. If were talking about an adventure or rpg games with puzzles sure, like the FF crystal

On the idea of swap characters... I like it when characters have both something that's swap-worthy AND something that's play-worthy. So you get at little something that shows a character was in the world and left something to help out, but also they're fun in their own merit. Not a character to swap in, use ability, swap out for better. But also can do some small thing that benefits others when they leave.

A good example is wicker and Wurt. This will not change the gameplay as a whole. You can live without it, but when Wirth has Wicker books left, it's nice

Why does people care about swap characters?

Because it's a bad character design practice that we shouldn't let Klei get comfortable with.

If a character's major pros can be experienced permanently as another character via swapping then the character in question doesn't really have any reason to exist.

They could be simply replaced with their perk(s) locked behind a boss or something like that.

For example Winona. Every character can benefit from her major perk- catapults indefinitely via swapping. Play as a character, gather resources, swap to Winona, build the catapults, swap back to your og character and never have to swap back to Winona. The only reason why one would continue to play as Winona is their... desire, willpower (?) to play as Winona. Unless there are people that really can't live without faster crafting or her other minor perks.

That's bad character design. Klei could delete Winona, add her unique structures as blueprints you get from Wagstaff and nothing of value would be lost (except her personality)

Very well said, I haven't been able to put into words why I dislike the celestial portal or why it feels so cheaty to me. This mirrors my sentiment precisely.

Sandbox means it's open to every possibility and that there's no required content and dst is true to this so it's hard for me to understand something not fitting in a sandbox genre even if it's survival sandbox unless it directly goes against the theme of the game itself.

Technically with the relaxed mode you don't even need to play dst as a survival game if you don't want to.

well, i dont think it fits forcing people to play a character because in that way you are disturbing players, you would need to add a minimum of narrative so everything makes sense like being wilson with a opal to visit the archives or to beat fw because is one of the survivor to beat him but also was wicker there because she knew somehow what was for the ancient key. They would even need to add other survivors as npc to match the lore

it could be cool in some way like needing to be wolfgang to move something or whatever but i dont think it brings enough good things to add it in a game like dst

freedom>mechanics from old RPGs that foce the player to play a character to unlock content

I mean it's really a matter of perspective your not forced to engage with content feeling you need to is simply forcing yourself. Besides we already have content locked behind other characters if you think about in the form of character exclusive crafts look at the Sisturn, bookshelf, and Merm king for example with the latter being a npc would making a exclusive boss or area that can only be opened up at it's base by a specific character be much more far fetched than existing examples? You could even argue the merm king is a player supported mini boss even if that's a stretch.

They wouldn't really need to add survivors as npcs as due to the online multiplayer nature of the game it's implied they're already around and lore wise gameplay also doesn't need to be a complete 1 to 1 with lore they can simply imply the situation had already occurred similar to how Wickerbottom's quote already does with the archives.

Also you seem to say that character specific paths are just mechanics from old rpgs but those mechanics have never actually left games nor have they ever been limited to just rpgs. They're still used to this day not because it's the way it's always been but because it's engaging to have different approaches to progression due to their unique talents. Look at a game like sonic 3 for example paths opened up if you played knuckles who could break rocks or tails who could fly. That's not to say it can't be handled poorly or that dst even needs something like this but I'd personally find it interesting to mess around with.
