Wilson REWORK? | He might be more significant to Them than we think.

Recommended Posts

So, for a while now, I've been thinking about this theory, or rather, a few seperate theories that all share the same synopsis.

And what that theory might be, you might ask?

Spoiler

Shadow Wilson, the entity that has existed since the earlier versions of the game. Back then we didn't know much about him or why was he there to begin with, except to inform us about an upcoming update. Perhaps it was some odd easter egg? Though it was weird how Klei literally made merch based off this one supposedly unimportant entity.

Welp, that's why I'm here today, to break down this theory the best I can, and its for you to decide which of those last options is the most plausible.

  • FIrst off, let's start with Wilson's hands and how they changed since his very brief time on the nightmare throne.

Sure, Klei does seem to be pretty inconsistent with the design of many characters, this includes the way they've been drawing wilson's hands, but its pretty clear that for the past 2-3 years at least (since about october-november 2019), they've intentionally been drawing Wilson's hands as black, shadowy claws.

So does this alone make him in any way connected with the Shadows? No. Sure, his hands might gradually be turning into claws, the same way Maxwell's did, although during a much, much shorter period of time, ( I'd say 2 days more or less ) therefore with less of the throne's influence.

So perhaps it's not the throne alone that slowly warps its victims, but the still presence of the shadows long after.

That, or Wilson is just built differently from others.

  • My second point, is what his hair is made of exactly? I think by this point, we all already know about his beard's unique properties.

With this stuff, we can create the meat effigy, the interesting artifact that serves as your life insurance after you die. What's more, is that it's canon that he invented it, by looking through his old field notes.

Spoiler

I am in an environment much harsher than that to which I am accustomed. Everything here is trying to kill me, or eat me, or... worse. It’s almost as bad as graduate school!

If I am to survive this place, I fear I must resort to drastic measures. That’s okay, though, for I am a Scientist, and my Science is nothing if not drastic. I think that if I build a wooden effigy of myself, and fill it full of meat, I can create an insurance policy against violent death. It’s a technique that’s well-known amongst the scientific community.

Maybe I should throw in some of my beard hairs as well. It couldn’t hurt!

So it seems his beard hair does appear to have some kind of magical properties, but what exactly is it made off? Surely it can't be "normal human hair"

Well, remember these guys?

Yup, whenever your sanity drops below a certain point, rabbits and bunnymen take this shape. More over, once you kill them while they're still in this form, what exactly do they drop? Beard hair.  Aka the only way for other characters than Wilson to optain the meat effigy.

So it seems Wilson and the rabbits are indeed connected in some way. Through the nightmare fuel. Could this be what his hair really is made of? Or is simply influenced by it.

I mean, it might be because he's getting high off it or something, based on his quote on it, but let's ignore that thought for now.

Anyways, let's move on...

  • Maxwell's rework and the few bits about Wilson that we got from it.

When Maxwell is in his dream state, we could see a chess board appear with all the human characters +WX, where Wilson is included.

The Pawns of Their game.

Later on though, by the end of the animation, Charlie holds a similiar board, but Wilson isn't present. How can that be? Would Klei really forget to add their face man to the final scene? Well, I don't think so, for there was another thing here, that caught my attention. Aside the weird placement Wes got on the board.

This single frame.

The symbol below looks rather similiar don't you think?

And the word translated from Latin? Preciousness, Costliness, Jewel. But specifically the first one. Could this mean that Wilson is in some way valuable to Them? Or is it just a coincidence that that symbol on the wall just so happened to look exactly like his hair?

But then again, why?

Whatever Klei are doing with this man, some of these things have to be adding up.

And I don't know about you, but this got me thinking. Would Wilson rework finally bring us the awaited return of Shadow Wilson?

In that case, who would he turn out to be? Wilson but transformed into a shadow creature? A seperate entity that just happens to take his shape, or perhaps an Alter ego of his?

Or maybe just a prophet.

If shadow wilson does become a thing again, I'd love Wilson's new ability to be related to him. Since many players are still somewhat against a Wilson rework, it'd be best to achieve his newfound abilities under specific circumstances, so the other players can still experience the old Wilson while also the more experienced and adventurous ones explore his reworked side more. I'd say that'd be pretty great idea and honestly a win-win outcome for everyone.

But that's it for now, I'll try to find more solid proof for this theory but don't expect too much of it.

If you wish to discuss it more though, feel free to, in the comments!

Either way, we'll find out soon enough whether It has any leg to stand on, once Wilson rework actually arrives.

Awesome write up, really fun to read and ponder and I haven’t seen any of this stuff before so really nice. It definitely seems some of this stuff is relevant, maybe in a few days or so when we get the beta we’ll know for sure to what extent!

I wonder if Wilson’s beard growth is effectively his body filtering out the influence of nightmare fuel.

Out of all the characters in the game Wilson is the only one that has absolutely no anomalous abilities or characteristics.

There is some merit to shadow Wilson having some significance if he is in fact filtering out nightmare fuel through his hair. Shadow Wilson could just be a hair person lol.

__ EDIT

I just realized Winona is a character.. To be fair she is one of the most recent additions to the constant which explains her lack of anomalous abilities.

It seems like the only time they aren't looking forwards to a new update is when they're currently installing one. Perhaps a petabyte sized update is in order, that'll keep them satiated for awhile.

A few years ago I saw a theory about the meaning of the letter W

In a nutshell, it said that the shadows see "W" as a symbol of power and that's why they've chosen people whose names start with it. Wilson might be seen as the most powerful one since his hair resembles a W, and they might be right! Wilson is the only character who we canonically know has seen the whole Constant (RoG, SW, H, caves, ruins and throne) and discovered more than anyone else has. How did he do that? Wilson might have done many mistakes, but he can always try again thanks to his meat effigies and learn from his errors. While other survivors had to be cautious, Wilson could just make a new effigy and then do something very stupid without consequences. He is the hardest to kill for good.

i hope they dont take in count the W into the lore but it statys just as a firm of the game.  A goofy thing that have every character (i heard that in the beginning was a coincidence they continued doing) but that should have 0 meaning

always bothers me and makes me lose interest when media uses names or letters for mystical stuff in the lore

shadow wilson always looke to me like simply wilson about to kill an innocent creature with the light source in the back

his beard has no magical power, is just used cuz DNA to copy you. There are other sources of beard so other characters can revive

his heard... is true that looks like that ancient symbol but i just hope is just a coincidence and they dont develop it futher because would be bland, childish and very silly lore

the hands imo are simply a change in the artists doing them and how they want to recreate that sketchy style

Interesting theories, but the only one where I'm with you is the pretiositas symbol, although this could also be a W in general and Wilson's hair is just W-shaped as an old joke I believe. For all other visuals, I'd highly suspect it's simply the constant change of design you see with every character (like how Maxwell's chin becomes more hideous with every short, while Webber becomes cuter). And beard hair... My guess is simply a joke about "haha, beard hair go magic" plus a source of beard hair for other characters as a game mechanic.

And yes, we are content starved. Oh I wish Klei would give us more puzzles and not funny monke on the ocean...

I want to believe Wilson rework will also change core game stuff, because the games story line progresses.

We have 2 Setting up The stage update and a Maxwell rework, these three updates changes vanilla aspects of the game to show that The Constant moves on since Maxwells reign, changing by Charlie and Wagstaff shenanigans, and, of course, "Return of Them" ( tf who are they really?)

If Im not wrong, we are missing third and final Setting up The stage update. My guess - Wilson and final update will come in one day, considering all that radio silence from Klei, and how much time it takes to get at least a beta and a roadmap, lol

because the survivors defeated FW which was charlie's plan

I’ve never even seen, much less fought.. FW, and that’s one of the most frustrating parts about this game- why is so much content crammed away in some obscure corner of the map?? Why do I gotta do some late game thing to experience some new content??

When I bought Shipwrecked I did not do EVERYTHING there was to do in DS, same as when I bought Hamlet I barley played Shipwrecked, and then I went on to buy DST anyway- despite having never fought several bosses or unlocked several characters, I still bought the next DLC because I grew tired and bored of the previous one & wanted to experience something NEW.

When Turn of Tides was first announced for DST I was soooooo excited because finally I’d be able to build a boat and sail to some new exciting biomes and experience new mobs, weather effects, challenges, gameplay mechanics etc… but flash forward several years and what we really got was some very empty bare bones areas that act merely as content filler in between gathering a celestial alter part or fighting a moon god.

I would rather Klei released 3 15$ expansion packs with exciting new stuff I can experience IMMEDIATELY

When I buy the Batman, Ben 10 or Sonic DLCs for Minecraft I don’t have to have completely MASTERED Minecraft to enjoy those add-ons and that’s something that for a long while now has frustrated me with Klei’s content updates.. they expect you to have fought X, or know how to craft Y, and it’s… just not the same as simply Buying Shipwrecked or Hamlet and getting a new experience right when you spawn out of the gate.

I would GLADLY buy a DLC for DST like that, because I’m so tired of this “gotta go out of my way…” to find way that they design gameplay content.

Do you know I’ve never seen a Moonstorm or a Moonblind crow? I’ve been attacked by RockJaw sharks and ripped to smithereens by SeaWeed pelts, I’ve been invaded by Monkey Pirates, but I’ve never fought Fuel Weaver, I’ve never fought Celestial Champion.

Ive never even beaten the Bee Queen and  you kinda HAVE to beat her to get the highly important bundling wrap recipes.

But that’s exactly my frustrations with the way Klei designs updates for this game too.. they expect me to have all this backhand knowledge to experience the new stuff.

Why is so much locked behind fighting some really high health and highly annoying boss?? Why can’t I just do what was promised- and build a boat to go explore new biomes in distant lands? :( Why can’t I enjoy new character perks without needing to fight some highly obscure boss n the process??

Better yet… Why is Wilson the only character in the entire game who’s abilities are locked behind fighting a Boss?

is called progression and gives more utility to already implemented content

you arent forced to experience it and anyways what wilson unlocks is just a transmutation for the new boss loot so you wont care about it. Nothing really impactfull

your already repetitive complains are like saying "why this sword is dropped by this boss" in elden ring or "why i need to go to hell to unlock hard mode?" in terraria or "why i need to gather all bullet pieces to unlock the bulled character?" in enter the gungeon, etc etc etc

another good example. You sre complaining about defeating a no super difficult boss to get the best item in the game. You dont need it to survive so if you want OP things you gotta work for them or plsy single player and kill bees to get it in a silly and unbalanced way

Spoiler

Quite the upgrade from being the fool I'd say.

Also, the fact that the skill was called "Shadow Allegience" in the first place kinda implies that—intentionally or not—he's using science to get closer to the Shadows.

I don't think Shadow Wilson would become relevant, but I otherwise agree with your theory.

Yeah!!!  I love your write up on him.  I've been suspecting generally the same for a while, and him being absent from the board got me thinking... and now seeing as he has the ability to become a courtier to Charlie... somethings happening with that weird little man
