it is a literal chess board
maxwell is a king charlie is a queen we have a rook a bishop and a knight and the 8 og dst characters. only difference is that wilson tries to outsmart maxwell finally getting a checkmate in the epilogue only to lose to greater forces and be trapped on the throne

I don’t understand the question or the poll.. but it’s quite literally the same game, DST is Dont Starve Reign of Giants Minus the Adventures Mode Campaign, and Plus all the new stuff Klei has been doing to it since 2019’s Updates.

You can’t compare Shipwrecked & Hamlet to DST because those are DLC expansions, just like how Return of Them could be considered a DLC expansion to DST..

However what you CAN Compare are all the changes done between DST being a Standalone Multiplayer version of DS into what it is Today: More Akin to a full fledged Sequel.

I can say this because of the character Reworks, not only do they get lore back stories but some of them (like Woodie) even get continuations within their lore such as: When Wilson and Maxwell built the Jury Rigged Portal to pull all the survivors into the same “Dimension” Woodie was able to get Wickerbottoms assistance in controlling and using his curse to his advantage.

That alone sets DST apart from DS.. but there’s of course so much more: like survivors learning new craftables, Charlie taking over where Maxwells reign left off, Wagstaff doing Wagstaff things.

It’s no longer just A stand alone multiplayer version of Reign of Giants, now it’s it’s own beast: And it’ll continue to be its own beast with each new rework, dlc character, additional change, new mob, biome etc..

As far as which one of the games is “Scarier”? Well.. I don’t know about you but I never had Zombiefied Penguins with their bones and organs hanging out chasing after me in Solo DS.

I mean like didn't you know DSA has a chess theme and that DST has a stageplay theme, that what this poll is about, what do you think of the DST and DST theme.

The symbolize of DST and DSA the chess theme with Maxwell and the stageplay theme with Charlie.

This poll is about, what does this forum think about the underline symbolism of DST and DSA theme.

let me explain why I think DST has a different symbolism and theme than DSA.

The theme in DSA is chess the 8 pawns are the 8 characters, the bishop, the rook, the knight, the end you the pawn become the king, and the game start again like in chess, the symbolism is obvious, Maxwell is the king but still, a piece in the shadow plan he the most important piece so he kept in the safest place in the constant but king can only move 1 space at a time so he stuck on the throne, but where the queen she been hiding in the darkness she Charlie, the queen can move almost anywhere so that why you can't see her after Wilson got sent back to the constant she takes over the throne and become queen Charlie and a new story has started a new reign.

In DST the theme and symbolism have changed to fit with Charlie's new reign, not of terror but now of happiness either, not as a piece in chess but as the director of a play and the main villains, she part human part shadow not cruel or sweet, her responsibility is to make an enjoyable play fill with comedy and tragedy for THEM to watch, but nothing is without it flaw there been accidents like the moon falling out of the sky, and eye of terror from terraria, the new theme is the stageplay, in most stageplay have multiple main characters so that explains the multiplayer aspect and why they are so many characters because the characters now represent the main cast, the bosses are like villains some are underling of the main antag some are just there they are here to stop the group from ending the story, the supporting characters are the NPCs like, Woby, Pearl, and Wagstaff, the events are like Holiday special, that also might explain why we getting more animated short and the reason the compendium exist, the symbolism unlike Maxwell she is in control of her self and the constant like a director, there are now arc like story arc, normal charlie represent the comedy mask while shadow charlie represent the tragedy mask, that why the game said will Charlie aid the survivors or torture them or something else entirely, the way she interact with the story only appear in the animated short, the constant sybolize the stage that the survivor play in and Wortox is just a lucky guest who play along side the main cast, the reason the statue doesn't face is because she and the shadow forget that part of them selves as they become one also I think there this underline of losing something to gain something new, Wolfgang lose some of his normal strength to be come stronger, Wigfrid lose her original self to be come more like her true self, Warly lose his grandma to learn new recipe, Wes lose his ability to talk but learn Ballonmancy, every character lose something but gain something new in return except  for Wilson who lose nothing and gain nothing, the constant born like Wurt and Wormwood lose something Wurt lose her origin but gain new friend and Wormwood lose he origin but gain new friend, Pearl lose Crab king but get newfriends.

TLDR: I hate chess and like musical theater.

That is what the community calls it.

The symbolism of theater fits with Charlie's personality, I know that Maxwell fits well with chess but there was less of an interesting concept there.

The stage is Charlie calling I like her for that, the new marble statue is the representation of Charlie right nither of the side is in control Queen Charlie is the new personality that has some part of Charlie and some part of the Monster into one but only the some of them, not the core of what makes them themself, Queen Charlie rule justly not Cruel like Maxwell but not sweet as normal Charlie, she acts as the director and the main villain of the story but she doesn't do anything too cruel or too nice to the survivors, she only attacks the survivors at night and makes a lot of good things happened like give the player critter or making news creature and flora, the constant is now just a stage to THEM as they watch over the entire constant, and Charlie is the director and main villains after all so unlike Maxwell she actually in control well some part of her at least like Maxwell quote said: " She's still in there somewhere. I know it". She is a pretty great ruler she makes everything in "A New Reign" arc, not that anyone else but the survivors know, it's not like the Pig Merm and Bunny men know the existence of Charlie right? she probably makes at least some of the thing in "The Return Of Them" arc if Maxwell doesn't remember a creature it probably is safe to assume it moon mutation or Charlie newest creation, so I really like the idea of THEM just watching the play by Charlie as the survivors try to survive the more they get insane the more of THEM can interact with the play.

very interesting take

ive personally like DSA' simbolism because of how clear it is, how the king cant move but the queen can travel wherever she wants, how the last chapter is called checkmate, how the hands that are generating the world are the "players" playing chess.

maybe the reason why im not intereted in DST lore or bothered finding any simbolism is because charlie, to me charlie is just a flat and uninteresting character, at first she put a giant bee and a mushroom toad in the constant? but now she is trying to activate a portal? she is confusing and not in an interesting way

though i like the idea of "the tragedy and comedy" masks of charlie

What is the symbolism in Newhome?

Astrology is probably something about how the sign symbolism connected to Wilson and the other.

In defense of Charlie, I think that she trying to make the constant a more enjoyable show, before her reign the constant is full of tragedy some people love tragedies but in a world full of tragedy all of the time it would get boring fast so she added some comedy and action to the constant making it more enjoyable for THEM to watch, she added cute animals and big scary monster but it doesn't feel like she cruel or sweet but instead, she made everything from her passion, we know that Charlie is a very passionate person unlike Maxwell so that passion probably transfer over to Queen Charlie but also the Monster love for trouble making so that translate to when she felt passionate about something she will do it even if it screws over someone or something, the reason Charlie is in the Ancient Archive is not to open the portal (probably) but to study the ancient history (if Maxwell didn't know about this place then do you think Charlie know about it maybe) and to set up the stage for the next story arc why do you think Klei call it setting up the stage and arc if not for clear theme and symbolism of theather and stageplay connection.

Also, I think Queen Charlie is supposed to be the embodiment of drama.

Also, I hide the other one because of impulse thinking because I taught that I upset you somehow so sorry about that.

Today I learned DSA stands for don't starve alone. I always thought it was some joke or something to refer to DS as DSA. Thanks Paoling, I learned something today.

Don't thank me thank @UbiAnomaly they are the real hero.

Hate is too strong of an emotion to characterize at least my stance regarding such issue. I do believe DST lore is pretty much botched up, full of plot-holes and inconsistencies, abandoned plot-lines and-the-like, but I don't hate it; at most am apathetic/indifferent to such travesty of the original. DSA had a clear&clean theme of chess and everything gravitated around it. Simple and neat. One could theorize a sort of continuation of said chess theme regarding multiplayer.. but: the King of Darkness was kicked off by "his" Queen who took the throne (as any chess player knows from the Chess Rules-book, eh), the One-Eyed Eldritch God-monstrosity depicted in murals is.. nowhere to be seen, its theoretical counterpart, the Moon God/Alter seems a collective of entities mostly asleep/passive, players are still pawns yet a wild Wagstaff appears on the way towards... kicking some proverbial ball down the random road, Archives and Lunar worshiping by ancients is.. something, magic strive to be forgotten, a prop like Lunar Storms - that from a meteorological/functional pov serve no purpose whatsoever.. and so on. DST is more akin to checkers with a tad bit of football in the mix for good measure (intentional hyperbole), or at the least that's how it feels to my general listlessness on the matter. Some things go out with a bang, others with a sad whimper..
