Wolfgang's Rowing is not great.

Recommended Posts

In the Wolfgang Rework, Wolfgang got another perk where he's able to row faster with oars. This sounds great! I enjoy sailing so very much, and it's one of my favorite activities in the game. So I was really excited to try out building a gym and using purely oars to go mach speed as Mighty Wolfgang.

However, something extremely crucial that I found out, the maximum velocity when Rowing as Mighty Wolfgang does NOT increase, so you only really get increased acceleration.

To give you an idea of how "meh" this is, I compiled a small clip where I rowed against a Wormwood Bot.

As you can see, in quite literally the first 3-4 seconds of rowing, Wolfgang's speed stagnated and matched with Wormwood's speed. He had only barely made a dent of a few units in front of him.

Could the max velocity when rowing as Mighty Wolfgang also be increased? As of now, rowing as Mighty Wolfgang is not that fantastic, and the only instance where I can think this barely increased acceleration could be useful is the Crab King fight where you're going to be moving and changing directions a lot, that is if you're even doing the kiting geyser strategy, which most don't even do.

To be honest with you.. unless Klei patches it so he can instantly pull up masts/ drop & raise anchors I don’t think I would WANT to row much faster- have you played this game on an Xbox or with light of a deck Illuminator? No zoom out function.. visibility not even covering the full boat..

Sure I totally want to row faster right into a sea stack I didn’t have time to react to.

Well to be fair, most of the time you're not sailing in a straight line, and so you'll need to do more micro movements which is where I think the perk really shines.

I can see where you're coming from, but the thing is, oars already do this job so ridiculously well as other characters already that Mighty Wolfgang doesn't add much.

If you feel you might go too fast, simply don't row so often, it's okay to delay yourself when rowing. That's the magic of oars that you can't get as easily with masts.

Well yes but I believe the whole reason they removed Speed from his kit to begin with (outside of kiting enemies) was so he wasn’t literally going off and leaving his teammates behind killing everything by himself.

(they even made sanity drain faster when by himself so it’s harder to do it alone)

If his boat was “too much” faster then Wormwoods he would go off and leave poor Wormwood behind.

Which is ironic AF to say seeing as how on land Wormwood can just force himself to bloom and zoom around the map leaving Wolfgang behind lol.

I guess Wolf can always just follow the trail of flowers though. :)

If Wolfgang got crazy fast rowing speed though it would be a race between him and Goose Woodie to see who got to Lunar Island Faster.

no because is something wormwood can do few days after spawning

they removed it to be more focused on being strong man instead of the best of all jack of all trades (discutible decission tho)

It can be done, and I ran into this exact problem and increased both oar force and max velocity for each oar in the mod I made because very quickly getting up to the same speed is underwhelming.

I’d recommend raising the maximum velocity to the next tier with each oar, so you could go malba speeds with a driftwood oar, and even faster with a malba beak

I did this the first two times I ever fought and defeated him before I knew about the freezing strategy.. never ever again.

any tip with this? i tried the rowing method back when CK was release but notice that with the pearl and no damage mods (and even with them) the fight takes forever. I guess now you have more room to hit him but all advice is welcome because i really hate the ice staff-stand still method

Ah, I see Wolfgang is a fraud in this matter aswell, I was wondering why my mighty seaman assistant Wolfgang didn't fare any better then my Winona strokes in an anchorless malbatross battle, even with the malbatross bill.

As Toros said, the most straightforward and visible fix for this would be making each oar function as the oar a tier above when held by Mighty Wolfgang.

Regular Oar would be as strong as Driftwood oar.

Driftwood Oar would be as strong as Malbatross Bill

And Malbatross Bill would be rocket science

If you’re solo I don’t think it’s possible without damage modifiers. The problem is the claws soak too much damage so you don’t really get a chance to ever deal meaningful damage and you probably will get hit pretty quickly. But if you’re playing wolf/Wanda and or have buff food both the rowing strategy and the sail strategy should work. I haven’t compared the two against each other since I usually do the fight with my girlfriend everytime, but I actually think using one malbatross sail and an anchor is the best way to achieve the highest Dps you can. I basically leave the malb sail unfurled at all times and manipulate the anchor to move. A quick pump up will send you far enough for the dodge and then you just quickly adjust the steering wheel in the direction you want to go and you can keep swinging for a good while. If you overshoot it though you can be prone to slowly moving too far away even with anchor down. It works much better with two people obviously but I found that I could pull it off solo but I couldn’t do it without Wolfgang.

how do you prevent the claws breaking the sails?

The setup is basically just one malb sail, one anchor, and a steering wheel. If you place them in order from the object that needs the most space to least (I can’t remember lol), you can keep them all in the center and the claws can’t reach them. I will say if you misplace them even just a little bit though the claws can reach them even when it looks like they can’t. I’ve definitely messed it up a few times lol.

Often times the claws will figuratively flip you off and decide to go through the collision of the boat when clamping down, so they can reach structures in the center.

Honestly, I always felt the claws hammering structures when clamping down was really unncessary. I don't think it really makes the fight interesting in any way.

Really? I haven’t personally seen it through the times I’ve done it normally and then a few solo sail test sessions, but I could just be lucky.

Also hard agree it just seems like something tacked on just because why not lol.
