Lifting weights feels like a break in the gameplay

Recommended Posts

It feels like I need to stop playing for a minute every day just to stay normal. To stay mighty before, you needed to play kinda hard to secure so much food in the beginning. Now you just.. stand there... kinda hard. The gem dumbbell seems to be the only one worth using, but not from good balance, just less of this mechanic. It becomes easy in the late game like before just with an extra inventory slot taken up. I have no idea what could be done instead, but without any new abilities it's not worth it. Just nerf him and keep him the same.

I really wish I had something more constructive to say. I love don't starve and there's great potential with wolfgang, but I really can't imagine this mechanic can be fixed. For every X minutes of playing don't starve as wolfgang, you need to stop playing don't starve for Y minutes. There's no possible combination of X and Y values that are fun.

If you look at the numbers and the GIF in the technical post, you can see it takes 15 seconds to get 100 might with the best equipment. Not minutes! And you stay mighty for longer. And you can have dumbells.

I personally think this is a great addition, aside from having to pay attention to another meter, and I'm seriously considering playing Wolfgang again.

*With the best equipment" The problem isn't with the progression, the progression only serves to reduce a terrible mechanic. If it's supposed to be just as easy in the late game to be mighty, then was the point only to make the early game unbearable with two tiers of useless dumbbells that can't be buffed without breaking his overall balance? This update just changed boss speedruns without adding anything even interesting. I guess now they'll use wanda if anything.

Early game, you are better off simply not pumping yourself with the gold dumb bells to be mighty.

Its just so much easier to be at a normal state or even wimpy for short fights since by the time you've pumped yourself to be mighty, you could have just killed the mob in that time instead (such as koalephants, pigs, bees, and nightmare creatures that be spawning as you play).

I say that the gym with potato sacks is much better than the gold bel for going mightyl; you don't have to sit there and wait to get mightier and it's much faster than the gold bell (especially full mightiness). Problem is that the gym is stationary, so you are kind of tethered to it unless you build a lot of them early game, which kind of defeats the reason for having dumb bells lol.

the bigger problem is finding a reason to actually ever be mighty with speed boost gone theres no point to ever be mighty outside of combat

"Stand around holding some consumable item to fill your meter and not get nerfed" is not a good mechanic regardless of how often it is, what you get for it, and how well they dressed it up for the character. Instead of food, wolfgang now consumes time having fun.

I heard he can carry the piggyback now without speed penalty. I would trade mighty speed boost for that no question.

If they got rid of wimpy and gave him some downside to being mighty that would be actually interesting. But I just imagine everybody who's happy about this change never plays solo and never as wolfgang. Because your very first season is not fun. You really can't miss it.

what? I can see debuffs only - less insulation, more damage taken, less damage inflicted

OUTSIDE OF COMBAT less insulation isn't a problem because freezing itself is already not a problem unless you are fighting something you don't need mightyness

he could already carry piggyback in mighty form before the rework

To be more specific, wolfgang reduces the speed penalty of any equipped item by 0.3, to a minimum of 0 speed penalty while mighty.

Biggest benefit is marble armor which has no speed penalty while mighty, but also piggyback has no slowdown.

Heavy objects he can carry at 60% speed.  Other people got buffed from 15% to 30% of normal speed.

what i do is just rais it to ~74 if im going to fight but not soon so i can simply rise it quickly before the fight starts

and if i want to keep mighty i just pump a litle when it goes to 80

is way better than the old method but is hard to see because the time you waste to rise it is seen directly instead of being the time you waste to gather food to keep the old x3 hunger drain. We wasted way more time before but we didnt notice because was behind a secondary task

But that's what I've been saying this whole time. The time it took to say mighty was fun. It was active gameplay that was removed and exchanged with this crap. I can't even call it a game mechanic. Instead of food, Wolfgang now consumes time having fun

atleast it should have some kind of minigame like the gym

Well, before you just slammed two meaty stews in your face which takes about two seconds and can be done anywhere.

For what cost? Before you benefited from the speed boost, now I do not see why would you try to stay mighty out of a bigger battle.

To add to this, one of the easiest boss monsters with a sketch to beat early on is the newly added Eye of Terror, so you could easily get lvl 4 weights if you wanted to, making the process not very tough.

I was just saying that it doesn't take multiple minutes as many people are saying.

It's not quite the easy mode you were used to, but it's still okay. And it might even be fun to "upgrade" your gym and build a gym network if you ever need one.

Yeah, that's what I did but just with Dfly b/c I couldn't find the Terrarium.

I saw a post by @sawchuk where they proposed a slight buff to the "tick" rates at which you gain mightiness of the dumb bells that I agree with. The rock dumb bell is to maintain wimpiness (which is redundant so you go wimpy anyways) and struggles to keep you normal, while the gold one maintains normal mode and struggles to keep you mighty.

This one is the current one:

Dumbbell   Wimpy     Normal     Mighty
Stone         3 ticks     1 tick        1 tick
Gold           6 ticks     3 ticks      1 tick
Gem           6 ticks     6 ticks      6 ticks

This is what he proposed:

Dumbbell   Wimpy     Normal     Mighty
Stone         6 ticks     3 tick        1 tick
Gold           6 ticks     6 ticks      3 ticks
Gem           6 ticks     6 ticks      6 ticks

Another thing with the dumb bells is that you have to stop what you are doing to pump yourself. That is not fun. I think it would be good if the player could pump themselves while moving; standing there and waiting so you can deal 2x damage to a mob isn't fun.

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand by what ticks mean, could you elaborate? (in other words, explain to me like I'm a child lol).

Starting from 0, it takes over 4 minutes to become mighty with the stone dumbbell, and over 2 minutes with the gold one. The gem one takes not quite one minute, but literally any amount of time standing there doing nothing is crap game design. The gym minigame is cute, but is more fit for a game that would be showing you ads for the entire duration. Which they may as well for 50 seconds to 4 minutes. Pay to skip too, to hell with it.
