Cheap way to play ONI comfortably

Recommended Posts

For Oni, you just need a powerful CPU with high single core speed. You do not need a powerful GPU. Even integrated should be fast enough. Best is a new 12xxx intel or 5xxx Ryzen CPU. However, if you are on a budget, some older CPU should suffice.

Some time ago there was a suggestion about that to the developers.

It was suggested to limit in-game calculations: for example a lower limit to fluids and gas to grams instead of micrograms...

This would allow a smoother run even with older CPU.

I wish KLEI would implement that (for example with a toggle-able option in the menu) but i guess is too hard/demandig :(

I'm on a budget here. There is no ONI on Stadia and Steam Deck it's not there yet. Gaming laptop? Build a PC? Any cheap yet powerful enough build?

ONI game speed scales to this cpu list: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

If one wants to do a lot with a big map in the game, I recommend a minimum spec score of 3000.

GeForce Now is your answer.

You don't even need to pay for the basic membership. If you have decent internet connection go for it.

yes that is a solution, but it have latency , you need very good internet connection , and it cost, soo if you think you can get cheaper by that then think again

Interesting idea, didn't tried it before. I just installed it and:

* game crashes before loading the save

* I need to install game through steam every time I launch it through GeForce Now

* Most of the time I need to re-login to steam, which makes this horrible with complicated password and 2FA

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or this is garbage.

I propose a new business model - People can lease a PC from 8-9AM, but only Mondays. The friendly PC delivery man brings it at 7.30 AM and collects it at 9.30AM. ***

This service comes along with 1x monthly 10% pizza discount at PapaDupe, the minimum order requirement is 2 family size pizza. The service is called "Lease please" and can be paid by monthly subscription via DupePal.

*** Offer comes without cables, keyboard, mouse or monitor. Service needs to be paid 1 year in advance. Terms & Conditions apply, service is non-refundable. PC component selection varies.

-------------

If you want to play ONI casual, anything goes. If you want to go deep in to the game and do "everything", I would build a PC. You can use a lot of old or 2nd hand components ( case, power, mouse, keyboard, display, some 16gb ram flying around and such ), the game needs around 20% gpu power of a nvidia gtx 1060 + the most and very important thing: Choose a top single core performing cpu with great cooling + mainboard. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

Choose the cpu first and then get the parts together which work with that cpu and socket. :p Whatever you do, good luck !

That happens if you are part of the public test. The DLC has not been officially released yet. As a result, you need to install the DLC every time for now, and it should be automatically solved by the DLC release next week.

Other than the first time, there was no need to do that.

It is free for basic membership. There is no cost for that. He can continue playing and pay the $49 for six months if he likes it.

BTW, I am not associated with GeForce Now : )

"The CPU behind it all is an Intel CC150 processor which sports 8 cores and 16 threads. It looks like GeForce Now will be making use of the CPU by splitting it into two instances, each with four cores.

This works out as each user having access to 4 cores and 8 threads on a shared Intel processor per node."

"The CC150 is stated to offer eight cores, sixteen threads, and 16 MB of L3 cache. An interesting detail about this processor is that it lacks any turbo, it's listed as running at 3.5 GHz at all times with an operating voltage that varies between 0.672-volts to 1.008-volts."

If things can be tried out and tested for free, that is always good

I don't have any direct advice, but you might want to look at the Francis John crowdsourced benchmark thread.  It could point you towards better hardware.

One thing to note is that GPU performance is pretty much irrelevant.

Also, I highly doubt a Steam Deck would play the game well.  I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Cloud computer;or wait for "oxygen not included 2"。Waiting for game optimization is hopeless. Redesign the game and split the correlation of operation data can reduce the requirements of computer configuration, so it can only be the second generation.

Many Chinese players of "Oxygen Not Included" come from "Don't Starve", and "Don't Starve" has lower requirements for computer configuration, so their computer CPU score is more than 2500-2800.

There is only one cc150 on sale in the second-hand market, with a price of 2660 yuan, that is, 417 US dollars…………

Wait for I3 12100 to sell, or rush to buy i5 12400

i would not buy those , when you want build pc you want that it run normally at least 5-6 years, maybe even more.

go for I7-12700 if you want build now or wait little and look what amd offers in next year when he comes to market with ddr5

Absolute MAX best case scenario: code gets really optimized, all physics and pathfinding gets shoved to a GPU compute, memory optimizations done to the max and main thread gets multithreaded, also every isolated pipe/system gets multithreaded.

Enjoy your colony with 10k dupes and 60FPS. No more 10FPS because you have 10 pacus.

I've never seen desktop, laptop, smartphone or any piece of technology really surviving (performance wise) for more than 2-4 years. Money wise it's usually better to buy cheap and two years later buy NEW cheap rather than overpay for current PREMIUM technology. IMHO. Or let me put this in other way, I've made this mistake to many times to fall for it again :D

what you mean? i to have ddr3 laptop. note the gaming laptop not some cheap crap, and how long its been at me, hmm. 7 years i think, and i still can run all modern 3d games, oni have with that some issues in late game as it have ddr3 but in other way look, i not need new pc like 2-3 years atleast maybe more. note i to even use freaking 4k monitor at that laptop, also one port goes to tv, that i can look movies

Here's some graph. Thread means single thread performance.

It actually turns out to be kind of social that the game has nearly no gpu requirement, that avoids participating in the $$$$ graphic card mess nowadays

this is kind true for this game but not 100%, this game fill run better if you have gpu from example the NVIDIA, it not need be the the latest one tho 970 and up should be ok, below gtx970 i not recommend because NVIDIA stops make drivers anytime soon for them

4GB RX 480 still going strong!
